German champions Bayer Leverkusen announced on Thursday that Bayern Munich had signed German international defender Jonathan Tah for a free transfer.
The 29-year-old will remain in Munich until 2029 under a four-year contract.
“I’m very happy to be here at Bayern,” he said. In the club statement, Tah stated, “I want to take on responsibility here and work hard every day to ensure that we’re successful as a team and win a lot of trophies together.”
Tah won an unbeaten league and cup double from 2023 to 2024 while he was a decade old at Leverkusen. He expressed his intention to stay with Leverkusen beyond 2025 during his final home game in May, where he received a fitting farewell.
With one year left on Tah’s contract, Bayern had been in talks with Bayern to make the signing in the summer of 2024, but they refused to pay Leverkusen’s asking price.
After Eric Dier left for Ligue 1 side Monaco at the end of the season, Bayern was forced to sign a center-back.

Sporting director Christoph Freund praised Jonathan Tah as a player with international experience and quality who wouldn’t need much time to establish himself in our defense.
With his technical prowess, manner, and leadership style, he’ll make a good and significant addition to our team.
The Hamburg-born defender has made 35 appearances for the nation since making his 2016 debut, including 35 for Barcelona, which included a move to Barcelona where he would have joined former Germany coach Hansi Flick.
Tah has since become a key player in the defense of Germany. Since September 2023, he has started all but one of the international competitions.
Julian Nagelsmann’s squad will play in the Nations League finals the following month.
The hosts travel to Munich on June 4 for the semi-finals, with the winner facing either France or Spain in the final on the home turf of Bayern.
Bayern also made an effort to sign Florian Wirtz, who currently appears to be moving to Liverpool. Leverkusen admitted this week that the Premier League winners have “concrete interest” in the midfielder.
