Analysis: The competition is dominated by Bordeaux and Glasgow.

The best chance of winning it has always been to get as far into the competition as possible.

Holders Bordeaux, who have four bonus-point victories and is once more in the top seedings, made it to the final last year with three respectable knockout victories.

They have continued to excel in Europe and appear to be the favorites to defeat.

Leinster haven’t lost a pool game since 2018 and, despite not being at their best, are continuing to have an unbeaten record.

However, as Glasgow Warriors were awarded more bonus points, Leinster could face the prospect of departing from Dublin in the semi-finals.

Based on seedings, which both sides might prefer to use as opposed to a French side, would be Glasgow.

Bath won Pool 2, but they now face a trip to Bordeaux in the semi-finals if the outcomes match those of the knockout seeded teams because of Toulon’s defeat.

There are always knockout victories at home, with Northampton winning in Dublin in the semi-final last year and Munster winning in La Rochelle as examples.

However, since the following two rounds are played on April’s back-to-back weekends, it means a high seeding is more than likely required to advance to the semi-finals and beyond.

Toulouse, who has twice lost, managed to finish second in Pool 1 and will face a team that could rip up the seedings script, looking forward to a potential game with Bordeaux sooner than expected.

The Stormers have a difficult opening game against Toulon, who paid the price for sending a weak side to Harlequins.

The South African outfit has only lost once this season, so they are prepared to take on the challenge of attempting to win at home before possibly traveling to Glasgow.

Northampton Saints are in a last-16 draw with Castres, and they won’t be afraid to leave far off.

Challenge Cup winning way to the end

Ronan O’Gara’s side now faces Newcastle Red Bulls in a Challenge Cup last-16 tie following Harlequins’ surprise victory over La Rochelle.

Munster, who also dropped out of the Champions Cup, hosts the Exeter Chiefs.

QF1 – Montpellier (1) or Perpignan (16) v Connacht (8) or Sharks (9)

QF2 – Stade Francais (4) or Dragons (13) v Zebre (5) or Pau (12)

Winner of quarter-final one also wins quarter-final two.

QF3- Benetton (2) or Cardiff (15) v Exeter (7) or Munster (10)

QF4- Ulster (3) or Ospreys (14) v Newcastle Red Bulls (6) or La Rochelle (11)

Winner of the quarter-final three plays and the quarter-final four.
