Bago Flags Off Relief Package, Cheques For Mokwa Flood Victims

Umaru Bago, the governor of Niger State, has set the record for the Mokwa Local Government Area’s recent devastating flood victims’ receiving donations of aid and compensation checks.

Governor Bago described the incident as one of the most tragic and heartbreaking events in the state’s recent history, speaking for his Deputy Yakubu Garba at the ceremony holding the state’s flag.

He noted that 280 homes and 31 shops were destroyed by the flood, which swept through the historic town and claimed 209 lives. 3,534 people were displaced by the flood.

We recall the tragic event that shook Mokwa’s very foundation, with a sober heart. Although the governor was quoted as saying, “We are determined to rebuild and recover from this catastrophe.”

Governor Bago approved a $1 billion compensation fund for affected households and an additional $ 7 billion for the reconstruction of crucial infrastructure, including roads and bridges that were completely destroyed by the flood.

He made it known that each of the 458 affected households would receive $1 million, along with 25 bags of various grains, including: 10 bags of rice, 5 bags of maize, 5 bags of sorghum, and 5 bags of millet.

The governor also ordered the next of kin of all the 209 deceased victims to receive 1 million dollars each as a kind gesture.

Additionally, 500 000 will be given to each of the 31 shops and 280 damaged houses for reconstruction.
