260 Passengers Aircraft Makes Emergency Landing At Lagos Airport Over Technical Fault

A technical fault on Friday forced an aircraft conveying 248 passengers and 12 crew to make an emergency landing at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos.

A statement by Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, stated that the aircraft suffered a technical fault while airborne in Nigerian airspace, leading to the emergency landing.

Following a distress alert received on its 767/112 Toll Free Emergency Lines, LASEMA said upon arrival of the LRT at the incident scene, it discovered that the passenger aircraft was distressed.

It, however, noted that “The pilot executed a safe landing on the runway at Muritala Mohammed International Airport with LASEMA Response Team and other emergency responders standing by on extreme high alert on the runway.

“Collaborative efforts of the multi-agency responders were coordinated. After proper check by the pilot and the engineering crew, the aircraft was moved to the apron for detailed inspection and prompt repairs. All passengers of the distressed aeroplane were evacuated safely; no injuries reported, no loss of lives”, the statement said partly.

In spite of the technical issues and forced landing, the Agency added that the incident did not result in any significant damage to the aircraft.

US judge orders curbs on ICE agents’ actions against Minnesota protesters

A ‌federal judge in Minnesota has ordered the United States’ immigration agents ‍deployed ‍to the state to curb some of the tactics they have used against observers and protesters of their enforcement actions.

Tensions over the deployment have mounted in Minnesota since an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent fatally shot a 37-year-old mother of three, Renee Nicole Good, behind the wheel of her car earlier this month.

Good was taking part in one of numerous neighborhood patrols organised by local activists to track and monitor ICE activities.

On Friday, US District Judge Kate Menendez’s court injunction barred federal agents from retaliating against individuals engaged in peaceful, unobstructive protest ‍activity.

Officers were explicitly prohibited from arresting or detaining people protesting peacefully or engaged in orderly observations, if there was no reasonable suspicion that they had committed a crime ‍or were interfering with law enforcement.

The ruling also bans federal agents from using pepper spray, tear gas or other crowd-control munitions against peaceful demonstrators or bystanders observing and recording the immigration enforcement operations.

The US ‌Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was given 72 hours to bring its operation in Minneapolis into compliance.

The court ruling hands a victory to activists in Minneapolis, the state’s most populous city, two weeks after the Trump administration announced the deployment of 2,000 immigration agents to the area.

Their numbers have since grown to nearly 3,000, dwarfing the ranks of the local police. The DHS calls it the largest operation of its kind in the country’s history.

Crowds of protesters across Minneapolis have clashed with the immigration officers, opposing their efforts to target undocumented migrants, with some officers responding with violence.

Amid the escalating dispute between Trump and local state and city leaders, the president threatened on Thursday to invoke the Insurrection Act, allowing him to deploy the military to police the protests.

“If I needed it, I would use it. I don’t think there is any reason right now to use it,” Trump told reporters at the White House when asked about the move.

She also shared a few other snaps of herself and George together – including one on a beach and another of them hiking during her pregnancy, before sharing a final stunning image of herself showing off her blossoming bump. While Hollywood star Jennifer Garner also commented as she said: “Talk about thriving!!! Congratulations, @luciejones1!!!!”, in reference to Lucie’s starring role in the stage adaption of 13 Going On 30.

Lucie’s happy news comes just a few months after she went public with her new romance with George. The pair were spotted together at Glastonbury Festival, shortly before she took to the stage and performed her debut gig at the festival. Lucie’s new romance came as it was announced she had split from her fellow X Factor star husband – however it was insisted there was no crossover between the relationships.

Lucie and Ethan married in 2017 after meeting during auditions for The X Factor in 2009. The pair were said to be going through a divorce quietly in June last year, after the pair grew apart.

A source said the duo realised they were “young when they married” and now Lucie’s focus has changed. Speaking to The Sun, an insider said: “She has been busy focusing on pursuing her career on the West End stage and travelling the globe, they’re moving on with their lives. Lucie’s in a really good place and has already moved on and met someone else and has loved performing at Glastonbury.”

They added: “Ethan is no longer in showbusiness and their lives were headed in different directions.”

Meanwhile, she later told the publication in November of her new relationship: “It wasn’t an easy decision to be together when we knew each other before.” She added: “We chose to do this together, and it was informed, and it was purposeful to be together. We had to make those decisions together. So we’re going to bloody enjoy it now.

“And now that we are where we are in terms of, like, we are now boyfriend and girlfriend, we are moving forward together, I feel zero shame about that.” Lucie was a favourite when she appeared on The X Factor in 2009 and has remained in the spotlight ever since. She represented the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2017 and also has appeared in a string of West End shows.

ACF Fiorentina President Rocco Commisso Dies At 76

ACF Fiorentina President, Rocco Commisso, has died at the age of 76.

The Italian club announced in the early hours of Saturday, saying he died after a prolonged period of medical treatment.

Fiorentina confirmed Commisso’s passing in a statement published on its website, describing it as a painful loss for his family, the club, and the wider football community.

The statement read, “After a prolonged period of medical treatment, our beloved President has left us, and today we all mourn his passing.

“For his family, he was an example and a guiding light, a loyal and faithful man who, alongside his wife Catherine, reached the milestone of 50 years of marriage, and who was a strict yet loving father to his children, just as his character was: gentle and determined.”

The club noted that he and his wife had been married for 50 years, describing him as a devoted family man and a guiding figure to those around him.

According to the statement, the American-Italian businessman took over Fiorentina seven years ago, during which time he became closely identified with the club, its supporters, and the city of Florence.

It said under his leadership, Fiorentina reached two UEFA Conference League finals and one Coppa Italia final.

Football, the club said, was one of Commisso’s greatest passions, and Fiorentina became central to his life following his takeover of the Viola.

He was known for his close relationship with supporters and his personal approach, often insisting on being called simply “Rocco.”

“His love for Fiorentina was the greatest gift he gave himself, spending unforgettable days with the boys and girls of the youth teams, always offering a caring gesture and a smile to everyone. Tireless, he worked until his final days, dedicating himself to his companies, Mediacom and Fiorentina, and to their future. Football was his passion, and Fiorentina became so seven years ago, when Rocco took charge of the Viola club and began to love its supporters, its colours, and the city of Florence. ‘Call me Rocco,’ he had simply said to everyone, with his extraordinary empathy.

“He was always close to Florence and the Florentines, in everyday life and also during the most difficult period of the Covid emergency, when the ‘Forza e Cuore’ campaign provided substantial donations to the city’s hospitals,” the statement said.

“The Rocco B. Commisso Viola Park, the home of Fiorentina, will live forever bearing his name—an indelible symbol of his affection and his desire to look toward the future of young people. The boys and girls who grew up under his guidance in the youth academy, have won trophies and continue their journey with Fiorentina’s men’s and women’s first teams,” the statement added.

The club said the Commisso family expressed gratitude to those who supported him during his final days and said his memory would remain alive in the hearts of all who knew and worked with him.

“A heartfelt thought in this moment of great sadness goes to everyone at Fiorentina—staff, players, and employees—to the entire Viola community, and especially to the boys and girls who will continue to carry the Viola colours and the memory of our Rocco throughout Italy and the world,” the statement added.
