Lyon included in Ligue 1 fixtures despite demotion

Getty Images

Lyon have been included in the Ligue 1 fixtures for next season despite being relegated to French football’s second tier because of the poor state of their finances.

In the schedule released on Friday, Lyon have been earmarked to play Lens in their opening game of the 2025-26 campaign – which starts on the weekend of 16-17 August.

Lyon were provisionally demoted in November by the DNGC, the body which oversees the accounts of French professional football clubs.

Last October Textor’s Eagle Football Group, which owns a 77% stake in Lyon, announced debts of £422m.

Lyon previously described the DNGC’s decision as “incomprehensible” and have taken steps to appeal.

Les Gones finished sixth in Ligue 1 last season and qualified for the Europa League.

Their relegation could prove significant to FA Cup winners Crystal Palace, whose hopes of playing in the Europa League next season are under threat because of Uefa rules which prevent multiple teams under one multi-club ownership structure competing in the same European competition.

Textor owns stakes in both clubs although he agreed a deal to sell his 43% share in Palace on Monday.

At least one killed as Israeli strikes pummel southern Lebanon

The Israeli military said it attacked sites linked to Hezbollah, killing at least one person, and injuring more than a dozen others, according to the health ministry.

According to a report released on Friday, Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported that an air raid that hit a residential apartment complex in Nabatieh targeted a woman and 13 other people. In addition, the air raids carried out on the city’s fringes left seven people injured.

Hezbollah’s fire and defense system is housed underground, according to the Israeli army, in Belfort, which is located in the Nabatieh governorate. After Israel had previously stopped using it, the Lebanese group’s efforts to resume operations there were identified by the military.

The two parties’ agreement to resume activities there would have violated the November truce, which had put an end to more than a year of firefights and nearly two months of a total war.

Later on Friday, an Israeli army spokesman said that “the reports that an Israeli drone hit a residential building and injured civilians were untrue.”

Avichay Adraee stated in a post on X that “a rocket located at the Hezbollah site, which detonated as a result of the Israeli strike, caused the explosion that damaged the civilian building.”

He claimed that Hezbollah is continuing to store its provocative rockets close to residential buildings and Lebanese civilians, putting them in danger.

Large plumes rise from the hill where Israeli aircraft struck their target, as evidenced by footage that was shared on social media and verified by Al Jazeera’s Sanad fact-checking agency.

Joseph Aoun, president of Lebanon, charged that Israel had continued to violate the US-brokered ceasefire agreement by continuing to bomb Lebanon.

According to the ceasefire agreement, Israeli soldiers must leave southern Lebanon as Lebanese troops are stationed there, and all fire that is fired across the Israeli-Lebanese border must stop.

‘Best day of my life’ – Dunne delivers on F1 debut

Teenager Alex Dunne says making his Formula 1 debut at the Austrian Grand Prix is “definitely the best day of my life”.

The 19-year-old impressed as he posted the fourth-fastest time in opening practice for the Austrian Grand Prix as he stood in for McLaren’s Lando Norris.

The Irish driver was handed the opportunity in one of McLaren’s four mandatory sessions across the season where a rookie driver will take part in first practice.

Dunne is a McLaren development driver and leads the Formula 2 standings after six rounds with two victories in Bahrain and Imola.

“I want to say a massive thank you, you made a little boy’s dream come true,” Dunne said on his team radio after the session.

“This is definitely the best day of my life.

In taking part in first practice, Dunne became the first Irish driver to participate in a Formula 1 weekend in 22 years.

He started the session off slowly, carrying an aero rake on his car as championship leaders McLaren tested updates on the MCL39.

After a stint on hard tyres, the former British F4 champion posted the fourth-fastest time after switching to the soft tyres late in the hour-long session.

His quickest time was just 0.069 seconds shy of championship leader Oscar Piastri, who was third behind George Russell and Max Verstappen.

“I’m super, super happy. It’s safe to say it went pretty well,” Dunne told McLaren’s social media.

“We knew going into the session that the goal wasn’t necessarily for performance, it was more to help out with the car, help Lando and kind of just help the team improve as much as they can for FP2 and FP3, and onwards into the weekend.

Analysis – ‘He might give McLaren a few headaches’

Alex Dunne prepares to get into his McLarenGetty Images

Andrew Benson, BBC Sport’s Formula 1 correspondent: “There was a point where McLaren were thinking of dropping Alex Dunne but [former racing driver] Warren Hughes said to them if you look into the data, you can see that he is really talented and that’s really coming out this year.

“He’s been super impressive in F2 and that lap time. It is only first practice but it’s a very rare a driver gets into a grand prix practice session and laps that close to the regular race driver.

“Alex Dunne might be giving McLaren a few headaches because they already have Piastri and Norris under contract in F1 for at least a couple of years.

‘Diligent and impressive’

Speaking on Sky Sports, McLaren team principal Andrea Stella said Dunne was “diligent and impressive” in his approach to the session, which included testing the new upgrades on the McLaren.

“He also had the chance to show some speed, and it’s no surprise as he’s a fast driver,” Stella added.

“I think we need to be a bit careful looking at the lap times because his lap time came later on in the stint when the fuel was down.

“But it was encouraging and impressive, in terms of Alex himself and it was a good session for McLaren.”

Ex-Formula 1 driver Karun Chandock says Dunne’s performance in practice was “tremendously impressive”.

“If I was McLaren I’d be trying to do a deal with Cadillac or someone like that,” he said on Sky Sports.

“You want to find him a seat somewhere to build up some racing experience.

What comes next?

Heading into the Austrian Grand Prix, Dunne leads the Formula 2 standings by three points ahead of Dutch driver Richard Verschoor.

The Offaly driver has won in Bahrain and Imola, and claimed pole position in Monaco.

After his impressive F1 debut, Dunne returned to his Rodin Motorsport Formula 2 car for qualifying for the seventh round of the season.

He posted the seventh fastest time and will start from fourth in the reverse grid sprint race on Saturday (13:15 BST), and will line-up where he qualified for the feature race on Sunday (09:00 BST).

“It’s important not to focus too much on F1, it’s important to focus on F2 and trying to do as well as I can,” Dunne told BBC Sport before his F1 debut.

“If I get too wrapped up in it I can quickly forget about what I need to do this year.

Alleged Money Laundering: Witness Denies Harassment By Yahaya Bello’s Aides

Yahaya Bello, the fourth prosecution witness in the ongoing alleged money laundering trial of the former governor of Kogi State, refutes claims that the former governor’s security advisors harassed him.

At the conclusion of the cross-examination, Mr. Mshelia Bata, a compliance officer for Zenith Bank, stated that he felt the need to clarify the claim made by Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) counsel.

The defendant’s attorney, Joseph Daudu, SAN, claimed that the Commission’s witness had been harassed in a story published on the EFCC website.

Yahaya Bello, the former governor of Kogi state, is shown in a file photo.

He claimed that the EFCC improperly disclosed the court’s findings from the previous day.

Pinheiro responded, saying he would contact the EFCC office to inquire about the situation.

The defendant’s attorney, Joseph Daudu, SAN, also confirmed that the former governor had no connection to any of the accounts that were made available as evidence during cross-examination.

He acknowledged that the defendant was not also identified as a beneficiary of any transaction on Exhibit 22A, which lists the defendant as a beneficiary from pages 24 to 413.

“I’m here to speak on the documents I have.” His Excellency’s name was not included in any description or beneficiary in any transaction, he stated, confirming that from the document.

The compliance officer had previously confirmed letters that introduced the key personnel who had been appointed as part of the Kogi State Government House Administration’s signatories and mentioned the signatories on those accounts.

Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, the prosecution’s attorney, argued that the defendant’s attorney should limit his question to the document and not to the witness, who had benefited.

The witness, however, remarked that the witness had what to say because she was an expert.

The witness had previously stated that, among other things, he supervises a cluster of 13 branches in Abuja, including Gwagwalada, the University of Abuja, Ahmadu Bello Way, Baze University, Garki, and Garki Ultra Modern Market.

He also acknowledged that the Federal Capital Territory was not the location of his clusters.

Prior to the documents being presented as evidence, the witness was instructed to identify the signatories to the accounts and their designations.

He listed the names of accountants, including the accountant who serves as the permanent secretary, the accountant who is the chief accountant, and the accountant who are the permanent secretary.

The EFCC’s attorney had made the observation that the witness had been harassed by one of the defendant’s security details when it came to harassment.

The defendant’s attorney questioned the assertion, noting that he had always known his client to be a peaceful person.

He, however, promised to look into the allegations and provide a report in the process.

The defendant’s attorney was then advised to thoroughly examine the situation by the judge.

Further, the defendant’s attorney provided further information to the court regarding the request for the defendant’s travel documents to be recovered.

Abuse of Court Procedure

However, the prosecution claimed to have counter-affidavited the application, alleging that it was technically incompetent.

Pinheiro claimed that the FCT High Court had received the same application, citing the abuse of court procedures.

Daudu claimed that the prosecution was held accountable for court process abuse.

We received the counteraffidavit yesterday, and we later filed a second counteraffidavit with two additional exhibits.

My Lord, the main point of the request is for his passport to be released in accordance with the bail conditions that he must meet in court if necessary.

The defendant’s attorney added that after eight years of not traveling, his client needed to attend to some aspects of his health. He further explained that his client had medical needs to be treated for during the vacation.

FIFA Club World Cup 2025: Who’s in, who’s out – round of 16 preview

The eye-catching ties of a mouthwatering 16th round of the FIFA Club World Cup include Lionel Messi’s reunion with former champions Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid’s clash with Juventus.

The group stage of FIFA’s reformatted competition was completed by Real Madrid and Al Hilal’s victory over Salzburg and Pachuca on Thursday evening.

As the expanded 32-team competition reaches the knockout stage, Al Jazeera Sport examines the most important talking points.

What time does Round 16 start?

On Saturday, June 28, Philadelphia will host the first match of the knockout stages, with a Brazilian-only game between Palmeiras and Botafogo taking place at Lincoln Financial Field.

At the expense of Atletico Madrid, Botafogo defeated champions PSG to become the reigning champions of Brazil and South America.

The Sao Paulo side Palmeiras are above Botafogo in the Brazilian league and feature Brazil ace and future Chelsea winger Estevao Willian.

Botafogo have only lost once in their last five encounters with Palmeiras, including last year’s Copa Libertadores tie in the last two legs.

When and where will Messi’s team face PSG?

Inter Miami, under the direction of Lionel Messi, were a surprise package in the group stage, defeating Porto to advance to the last 16, but a late defeat against Palmeiras saw them finish second and must face PSG, the Argentinian playmaker’s former club.

On Sunday, June 29, Atlanta will host the game.

PSG’s long-awaited Champions League victory this year was the first time Luis Enrique’s side had beaten their MLS rivals, but Botafogo won to show that they are still untouchable.

In the round of 16, Man City will face defending champions?

As the only team at the tournament to win all three group games, Man City will face Al Hilal in the next round, and they will enter the knockout phase in ominous form.

In their previous two matches, they have scored 11 goals, with Juventus being thrashed 5-3 by them after they defeated Al Ain of the United Arab Emirates.

City will have no reason to be afraid if they play Al Hilal, the 2021 Asian champions, on Monday in Orlando, where Joao Cancelo is one of the many former stars from the top European leagues.

Is it the tie of the round between Real Madrid and Juventus?

Two traditional European titans who have met 21 times will square off in this fight. Real won both of the clubs’ Champions League titles, winning both of them.

Juventus’ 5-2 defeat at home to Manchester City suggests they might find it difficult to compete with Madrid.

Real are adjusting to life under Xabi Alonso, who tried a three-man defense against Salzburg. After missing the group stage due to illness, he hopes to have Kylian Mbappe back.

What had Dortmund’s complaint before the Monterray test been?

Niko Kovac, the coach of Dortmund, will be happy the game against Mexican side Monterrey is at the covered and air-conditioned Mercedes-Benz Stadium because he has not held back from expressing his feelings about having to play in the extreme heat of the tournament.

Dortmund has grown into the tournament despite their criticism. A Monterrey team that impressed, most notably a respectable draw against Inter Milan, will face former Real Madrid star Sergio Ramos.
