‘The game has gone’ – a bad night for VAR in semi-final

Manchester City’s 2-0 win over Newcastle in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final was overshadowed by a contentious decision to disallow a goal from Antoine Semenyo in the second half.

The £65m January signing fired City ahead on 53 minutes and thought he had added a second 10 minutes later when he flicked Tijjani Reijnders’ cross past Nick Pope.

However, the forward was denied a third goal in two games for his new side after a five-and-a-half-minute VAR check adjudged Erling Haaland to have interfered with play from an offside position.

“The second goal should have stood,” Semenyo said after the game.

Haaland was jostling for position with Newcastle’s Malick Thiaw when he was deemed to have obstructed the defender from stopping Semenyo’s effort.

Referee Chris Kavanagh watched the incident several times on the pitch-side monitor before announcing his decision to disallow the goal to the St James’ Park crowd.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Pep Guardiola said the disallowed goal will make his side “stronger”.

Captain Bernardo Silva also voiced his frustration with the decision, particularly after the Premier League’s Key Match Incidents Panel admitted Phil Foden was wrongfully denied a penalty in his side’s Premier League defeat at the same venue earlier this season.

“It should have been 3-0 but we are quite used to this at the moment,” said Silva.

“It is so frustrating because the last time we came here we also had a lot of decisions go against us.”

‘The decision is technically correct in law’

After a weekend where supporters enjoyed the FA Cup without VAR, this was the antithesis of the fans’ football experience at St James’ Park.

It took five minutes and 30 seconds from the moment Semenyo scored what he thought was Manchester City’s second goal until referee Kavanagh made the VAR sign to disallow it.

The job of the VAR, Stuart Attwell, was made harder because the semi-automated offside technology failed, as it did when the two teams met in the Premier League in December. The players were too close together, so it meant Attwell had to revert to the old technology and draw lines.

The decision is technically correct in law, because Haaland was offside and in direct contact with a defender who could possibly have stopped the ball going into the goal.

But fans won’t see it that way. They will see a perfectly legitimate goal with an offside offence which wouldn’t have been noticed but for VAR.

If the decision had been quick, there would have been much more confidence. But the extended delay adds to the controversy and gives the impression the VAR was not certain. It would have been better if the VAR had left this alone.

‘I don’t think we should be taking away goals’ – what are the pundits saying?

Former Chelsea and Blackburn Rovers striker Chris Sutton agreed with Guardiola and Silva and said Kavanagh’s verdict looked like a “sheer guess”.

“I think the game has gone,” added Sutton. “Is Thiaw really going to stop that? The distance from Semenyo is a yard, a yard and a half. Thiaw is not going to react to that.”

Ex-Liverpool and England midfielder Jamie Redknapp and Newcastle defender Dan Burn said it was the correct call to rule out Semenyo’s effort, though both criticised the process.

“If they had given the goal there wouldn’t be one person that looked at this and thought it shouldn’t have been allowed,” said Redknapp.

“But by the letter of the law, whether we like it or not, it is the right decision.”

Meanwhile, Burn, who missed the game through injury, added: “I do think it is the right decision, I just don’t like the subjective offside. It’s either offside, or it’s not.

“We don’t want to see that, but by the letter of the law it should be disallowed.”

Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards said: “I understand the process but VAR wasn’t brought in for this reason here.

“This is anti-goal which they said they weren’t going to do, they said they weren’t going to re-referee the game.

How are the fans reacting?

Aman: Get rid of VAR! It’s a joke, the officials are trying to find reasons to not award goals! There was no reason to rule out that second goal!

Mick: The worst VAR decision I have ever seen. There are re-refereeing the game.

George: As fans we didn’t ask for VAR, it was pushed upon us and it’s ruined the game. As soon as the ref goes to the screen we all know how it’s going to pan out. It all just takes too long. Rubbish.

Finn: So VAR has decided that Haaland made Pope jump forward and try to stop the shot. WOW. Laughable.

Shortly after the ceremony at Bath Abbey, Gordon explained there was a tough moment on the day. Appearing on This Morning earlier this month, Gordon defended his explosive father of the bride speech and said it was ‘perfect.’

The chef admitted it had been a “tough” gig to do but feels he stood up to the task at the star-studded nuptials where the likes of David and Victoria Beckham were in attendance.

Admitting he was a “hot mess” – while praising his jaw-dropping speech, Gordon told Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard on the show: “Being a dad of three daughters, you dream of that moment. I was a hot mess but the speech was perfect, it went well. You’ve got to be warm and emotional but it was a tough gig.”

And it was a speech that is said to have made onlookers cry. His eldest daughter Tilly added: “I was sat in his room for an hour as he was just reading through it. It was just like going through everything, but no tweaks were needed. It was perfect. It made everybody cry.

“It was so emotional but so incredible to see her and Adam so happy. It was a big day for all of us.” The Strictly Come Dancing star went on to describe the entire day as being “perfect”.

The Sun reported that in his father of the bride speech Gordon remarked on how beautiful Holly was and told Adam that he was a “lucky man: saying: “Look at Tana and that’s what you have to look forward to” then told his daughter: “Shame you don’t have the same.”

US to end deportation protections for Somalis

The administration of United States President Donald Trump will end temporary deportation protections and work permits for some Somali nationals in the US, authorities say.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said on Tuesday that the Trump administration was ending Temporary Protected Status (TPS), which shields migrants from deportation to countries where it is deemed unsafe to return and grants temporary work authorisation, for Somalis living in the US.

“Country conditions in Somalia have improved to the point that it no longer meets the law’s requirement for Temporary Protected Status,” Noem said in a statement. “Further, allowing Somali nationals to remain temporarily in the United States is contrary to our national interests. We are putting Americans first.”

The decision, which is expected to affect about 1,100 people, is likely to face legal challenges.

The Somali community has become a frequent target of the Trump administration. The US president has called Somalis “garbage” and depicted them as criminals.

In recent weeks, the Trump administration has lashed out at Somalis in the US, alleging large-scale public benefit fraud in Minnesota’s Somali community, the largest in the country, with about 80,000 members.

Trump has threatened to strip any naturalised Somali or foreign-born person of their US citizenship if they were convicted of fraud, as he continued his attacks on the Somali community.

“We’re going to revoke the citizenship of any naturalised immigrant from Somalia or anywhere else who is convicted of defrauding our citizens,” Trump said on Tuesday.

The administration has additionally cut off Minnesota’s access to federal childcare assistance and surged immigration enforcement agents to the state, home to a sizeable Somali population, prompting widespread anger and condemnation from local and state officials over aggressive immigration raids.

Heavily-armed agents have broken car windows and detained people, used frequent force against protesters, and asked residents for proof of citizenship, drawing concerns from civil liberties groups.

Rahm, DeChambeau & Smith choose LIV over PGA return

Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau and Cam Smith have all indicated they will remain with LIV Golf rather than rejoining the PGA Tour.

Five-time major winner Brooks Koepka was recently accepted back on the American circuit after he quit the Saudi Arabian-backed series to prioritise “the needs of his family”.

The PGA Tour subsequently opened the door for fellow major winners Rahm, DeChambeau and Smith to follow Koepka under a new returning member programme, open until 2 February.

But the trio quashed the prospect of a return when they spoke at a news conference for LIV Golf captains.

Rahm, 31, said he “wished Brooks the best” but was “not planning to go anywhere”.

“As far as I’m concerned, I’m focused on LIV for this year and hoping my team can repeat as champs,” said the Spaniard.

American DeChambeau, 32, pointed out he is “contracted through 2026” and said he is “so excited about this year”, while Australian Smith, also 32, added that he had “made a decision” and will “be on LIV for years to come”.

Only players who have been away from the PGA Tour for at least two years and have won The Players Championship or a major between 2022 and 2025 were eligible to return under the terms of the PGA Tour initiative.

That meant Rahm, DeChambeau and Smith were the only LIV players able to consider a move, with Phil Mickelson ruled out because he won the last of his six majors at the 2021 US PGA Championship.

PGA Tour chief executive Brian Rolapp outlined that programme would be only open for the 2026 campaign and was in “response to a unique set of circumstances”.

“This is a one-time, defined window and does not set a precedent for future situations,” Rolapp said in an open letter.
