Nottingham Forest seriously boosted their Champions League qualification hopes on Monday with a win at Tottenham that lifted them to third in the Premier League table.

Just three points separate Forest and Aston Villa in seventh, with the Premier League’s top five guaranteed a spot in the Champions League next season.

After Chelsea and Manchester City both won at the weekend Nuno Espirito Santo’s side had slipped from fourth to sixth before their match with Spurs.

But Forest, who have twice lifted the European Cup but haven’t played in Europe’s premier competition since 1980, rallied with a 2-1 win.

As many as 11 European places are up for grabs and there will definitely be a minimum of eight teams – up from the usual seven – playing in Europe next season, but things could change in the coming weeks.

It means Crystal Palace down in 12th still have something to play for.

How many teams could qualify for the Champions League?

Depending on how things pan out this season there will be between eight and 11 teams from the Premier League taking part in Europe next season.

A minimum of five of those will be in the Champions League, which is higher than the usual four because of England’s performance in Uefa’s coefficient rankings.

How many teams could qualify for the Europa League?

The maximum number of Premier League teams who could be competing in the Europa League is three.

Two places will likely go to the team who finishes sixth and the FA Cup winners.

However, if the cup winners have already secured a European place it will then go to the next highest placed side that has not qualified for Europe.

A graphic showing there will be a third Europa League spot awarded if Chelsea win the Conference League and fail to qualify for the Champions League

What about the Conference League?

There will be one Conference League place awarded to a Premier League team.

Currently, that will go to Carabao Cup winners Newcastle, but that could change if Eddie Howe’s side qualify for the Champions League or the Europa League.

As Newcastle currently sit inside the top four that looks likely.

How could 11 English teams be in Europe?

This could happen, but it is highly improbable.

It would require Arsenal to win the Champions League, Manchester United or Tottenham to win the Europa League and Chelsea to lift the Conference League trophy, and all three winners to finish outside the top six.

Niall Horan has reportedly spent £10million on a new home in a west London neighbourhood close to the likes of Holly Willoughby and Ant and Dec. The One Direction singer is known to keep it lowkey but it has been said the star recently splashed out on a new house as he wanted a place that was “a little more grown up”.

According to a source, the new property has a few floors and features six bedrooms, making it feel like “a proper family home”. The insider went on to say that the star has settled in with his girlfriend Amelia Woodley and their shared dog, with the two apparently being spotted in the neighbourhood.

“They’ve been spotted a few times in the neighbourhood now but people leave Niall alone and let him just get on with his day,” the source said to The Sun.

“It’s lovely that someone as well-known as Niall can live the quiet life he’s always wanted.” The Mirror have reached out to the singer’s reps for comment.

Last month, Niall revealed he’s planning on spending the summer working on his fourth album. During a chat with Golf Pass, he was asked about what he was excited about for the future.

He said: “I am literally, this week, just about to sit down and I’ve been like accumulating some ideas but I’m going to sit down and start writing my next album. “

The star continued: “That’s an exclusive, I’m working on a new album guys. ” In October, a few days before the death of Liam Payne, Niall announced his plans to step back from the limelight for a while.

Niall, who wrapped up his The Show world tour, made the announcement during his final gig at the Movistar Arena in Colombia, telling his fans: “This stands from tomorrow onwards, you’ll never find me.

“I’m gonna be hungover as f*** tomorrow! And I’m gonna disappear for a while. I’m gonna make you guys a brand new album and I will be back, I promise. “

Niall, who shot to stardom as a member of One Direction alongside Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne and Zayn Malik, previously described his current album as “more mature” than his past work.

In a chat with BANG Showbiz, he shared: “It’s definitely the most different, the sound of it has matured a lot. It’s kind of a conceptual album about the things in your life.

“The Show is a metaphor for life in this case, and all the spokes of the wheel that makeup your life experience. “

Halo World Championship

Venue: Crucible Theatre, Sheffield Dates: 19 April to 5 May

Emotionally “drained” four-time champion John Higgins beat Joe O’Connor 10-7 in a tense affair as he reached the second round of the World Snooker Championship at the Crucible Theatre.

Higgins who turns 50 in May, overturned a 5-4 deficit from Monday morning to lead 7-6 at the mid-session interval while remarkably compiling just one break above 50, a superb century in the 12th frame.

But he struggled the shake off the Englishman until O’Connor failed to capitalise on several chances to win a dramatic 15th frame, that Higgins took to go 8-7 up.

The Scot crafted a wonderful 114 break to move further ahead and another half century helped him seal his victory.

Higgins had been cast as one of the favourites to triumph in Sheffield after winning the World Open – where he defeated O’Connor in the final – and impressively beating Mark Selby in the final of the Tour Championship.

However, his plans were thrown into doubt when his father-in-law became seriously ill on the eve of the tournament.

And he was visibly emotional while speaking to BBC Sport at the end of his contest with O’Connor.

“I left my apartment and I was in tears,” Higgins said.

“That was the most emotional I have ever been today. Obviously my father-in-law wasn’t great.

“I was sitting having dinner with my boy last night and I was thinking about sitting here with my dad 25 years ago. I was drained today.

“I had a couple of hours sleep and I came out tonight and felt a lot better and played a lot better. I am still so proud that I am still playing at a good level at this age. “

Northern Ireland’s Allen advances

Meanwhile, Mark Allen beat China’s Fan Zhengyi 10-6 to book his place in the second round for the fifth consecutive year.

The 39-year-old from Northern Ireland, who had trailed 3-0 before fighting back to lead 5-4 overnight, made breaks of 88 and 102 on his way to setting up a last-16 tie with qualifier Chris Wakelin.

Allen, a former Masters and UK Championship winner, is bidding for a first world title to complete the full set of Triple Crown event victories.

The world number eight told BBC Two: “It was a bit of a shaky start yesterday and I thought Fan was very good at the start. I was really happy to be 5-4 in front overnight and I played some really good snooker today.

“I stole two frames in a row that I had no real right to win and it made the scoreline look a little flattering at the interval – 9-4 could have easily been 7-6 and then it would have been game on.

“I didn’t close it out as clinically as I would have liked but I finished off nicely. “

Allen is joined in round two by Zhao Xintong, who wrapped up a comfortable 10-4 victory over 2024 runner-up Jak Jones.

Jones’ exit means both of last year’s finalists have exited the 2025 event in the first round, following defending champion Kyren Wilson’s defeat by Lei Peifan on Saturday.

Zhao will meet fellow Chinese player Lei for a place in the quarter-finals.

In Monday afternoon’s other first-round contest, three-time UK champion Ding Junhui opened up a 6-3 advantage against world number 73 Zak Surety.

Debutant Surety struggled to settled early on and was 4-0 down before he found any rhythm at all.

However, the Englishman regrouped after the mid-session pause and made a century break as he took three of the remaining five frames to limit the damage prior to Tuesday afternoon’s concluding session.

Zhao ‘will be hard to stop’ – Jones

Zhao’s first-round display was one of the most impressive of any player during the tournament so far.

The 28-year-old led 7-2 overnight and, after Jones took the first two frames of the morning, Zhao won the next three with breaks of 70, 55 and 87 to defeat the 16th seed from Wales.

Zhao is competing as an amateur in his first World Championship appearance since 2022, having completed a 20-month suspension earlier this season.

The former UK Championship winner was one of 10 players banned in 2023 following an investigation into match-fixing. He did not directly throw a match, but accepted charges of being a party to another player fixing two matches, and betting on matches himself.

But he will return to the professional ranks next season and both Jones and former world champion Neil Robertson saying they expect him to contend in Sheffield.

“I’m so happy he said that and I will try my best,” said Zhao when told of Robertson’s comments.

“Hopefully in the future, we will have a Chinese world champion here and we are trying to do that. “

Jones, 31, added: “Zhao looked really sharp, the qualifiers have done him good, and I’ve had two best-of-sevens in the past 10 weeks or so.

Wife of former US Senator Bob Menendez convicted in bribery trial

Nadine Menendez, the wife of former United States Senator Bob Menendez, has been convicted of accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of bribes in exchange for attempting to use her husband’s influence to benefit Egyptian officials and New Jersey businessmen.

Nadine Menendez, 58, was found guilty on Monday of all 15 counts she faced, including bribery, honest services wire fraud and conspiracy for a public official to act as a foreign agent. She will be sentenced by US District Judge Sidney Stein in Manhattan on June 12.

The conviction comes after Bob Menendez, a Democrat who represented New Jersey for 18 and a half years, was sentenced in January to 11 years in prison.

“Nadine Menendez and Senator Menendez were partners in crime,” acting Manhattan US Attorney Matthew Podolsky said in a statement on Monday after the verdict.

“Together, Nadine Menendez and the Senator placed their own interests and greed ahead of the interests of the citizens the Senator was elected to serve. ”

Outside the court, Menendez, who had pleaded not guilty, wore a pink mask as she stood next to her lawyer, Barry Coburn, who said he was “devastated by the verdict”.

“We fought hard and it hurts,” he said. “This is a very rough day for us. ”

The once-powerful chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, Bob Menendez was convicted at trial last July on charges related to efforts to speed Egypt’s access to US military aid, as well as interfering in local prosecutions of businessmen, in exchange for bribes including gold, cash and a Mercedes-Benz.

Bob Menendez, 71, resigned from the Senate the following month.

The evidence shown to jurors over a three-week trial followed the timeline of the whirlwind romance between the couple that began in early 2018 and continued after criminal charges were brought against them in September 2023.

Nadine Menendez was to be tried with her husband for her alleged role in his scheme, but her trial was postponed after her lawyers said she needed treatment for breast cancer.

Prosecutors said New Jersey businessman Wael Hana arranged meetings between the senator and Egyptian officials, who pressed him to sign off on military aid.

In return, the businessman put Nadine Menendez on the payroll of a company he controlled, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors also said Hana and Nadine Menendez communicated requests and directives from Egyptian officials to the senator.

Hana was convicted along with Bob Menendez and sentenced to just more than eight years in prison.

Another defendant, businessman Fred Daibes, was also convicted and received a seven-year prison sentence. Prosecutors said Daibes wanted the senator to protect him from a criminal case he was facing in New Jersey.

The couple also received a Mercedes-Benz from businessman Jose Uribe in return for Bob Menendez using his clout to pressure the New Jersey attorney general’s office to stop investigating some of Uribe’s associates, prosecutors said.

Oti Mabuse defends JoJo Siwa and Chris Hughes’ Celebrity Big Brother connection

Former Celebrity Big Brother and professional dancer Oti Mabuse was on hand to defend JoJo Siwa’s hands-on friendship with Chris Hughes on the ITV reality series

As fans question JoJo Siwa and Chris Hughes’ relationship in the Celebrity Big Brother house they had a surprise supporter in Oti Mabuse. The former Dancing On Ice judge and previous CBB contestant appeared on ITV spin-off show, Late and Live and offered an insight into the friendship.

Oti revealed their closeness is normal in the dancing world – JoJo rose to fame after appearing on reality TV show Dance Moms, before gaining notoriety in the industry. And as fans were confused by how close Chris and JoJo were getting, Oti admitted it’s normal in the industry.

It came after JoJo, 21, was seen sucking chocolate from 32-year-old Chris’ shorts in a scene before then trying to help him with a rather delicate ingrown hair.

After panellists said the behaviour was “not normal” Oti jumped in: “Can I just say I don’t mind their friendship. As a professional dancer, we are quite tactile people anyway so we don’t mind touching.

“We don’t mind touching and being really close because their friendship is actually showing other people’s insecurities and thinking why are we not in that duo and it’s just showing who they are. “

She went on to say she did think the friendship was genuine, adding: “I don’t think that Chris is thinking opportunity with JoJo. I just think his intelligence level is more like JoJo and it’s literally platonic. “

Earlier on the main show, JoJo was seen consoling Chris after he broke down in tears in the Diary Room. As the group had to find hidden Easter eggs using clues, one explained how a housemate had called Chris annoying.

The reveal upset Chris, who spent 63 minutes talking to Big Brother. He said: “I hate toxic stuff in life. I hate toxic energy. It just brings you down. You can feel when energy shifts and it’s just not nice.

“I don’t want to be emotional and sad but sometimes you just can’t help it. “

After the former Love Island star returned to his housemates, he attempted to deflect from the issue when Patsy Palmer asked why he had been away so long. He tried to pass it off as having had a stomach ache, but Patsy thought he had received a secret meal.

However, with pal JoJo Siwa noticing he was upset, she grabbed her friend for a close hug. He continued to ponder on the moment later on.

Speaking to JoJo in the garden he said he “isn’t cut out” for the Big Brother house.
