Ben Stiller defends Sinners against critical headline after an impressive box office debut

Hollywood A-lister Ben Stiller has taken to X to defend the new vampire horror film Sinners after critical headlines overlooked the film’s historic box office success

The Hollywood trade publication, Variety, has come under fire for its decidedly unfair headline about the newly released film, Sinners. The vampire-horror film achieved monumental success during its Easter weekend opening, which saw the film grossing USD$48 million (£36million) in the States and USD$63 million (£47million) globally. Despite this, Variety said that “profitability remains a ways away” for the film. But Ben Stiller has said that review paints an unfair picture.

Director and actor, Ben Stiller, has publicly defended Ryan Coogler’s new vampire horror and called out Variety for the critical framing of the film’s debut. Taking to X to re-share Variety’s article, Stiller wrote: ““In what universe does a $60 million opening for an original studio movie warrant this headline?”

Sinners features Michael B. Jordan portraying identical twin brothers who return to their Mississippi hometown only to be met with a great evil. The film is set in 1932 in the American South during the Jim Crow era, when laws perpetuated racial discrimination.

The original Variety post read: “Sinners’ has amassed $61 million in its global debut. It’s a great result for an original, R-rated horror film, yet the Warner Bros. release has a $90 million price tag before global marketing expenses, so profitability remains a ways away.”

The Severance director was not the only Hollywood star to take offense to the negative headline. Comedian and actress Kristen Schaal responded to Stiller’s X-post. She wrote: “No one will write anything without a negative spin anymore. I guess that’s what gets the clicks, but it’s so gross and tired. And then people start thinking like that. It’s a disgusting cycle we are in.”

Even White Lotus star Patrick Schwarzenegger shaded the publication, commenting on Variety’s X post: “It’s opening weekend…” Seemingly suggesting that it is only opening weekend and that the film’s overall profits remain to be seen.

In a series of X posts, Black List founder and TV and film producer, Franklin Leonard, called out the box office coverage from The New York Times and Variety for its double standard against Black-centred films. Leonard went on to say that, ultimately, the issue is not about a single reporter.

Leonard writes: “We know for a fact that historically Black films have been distributed in less territories and have received less money in those territories when they are, so to conclude that they’re harder to market because of their box office alone isn’t a data driven conclusion.” He continues: “If Black films were marketed abroad at the same rate other films were, they’d perform roughly similarly.”

Despite the less-than-flattering trade coverage, Sinners is being hailed as a huge success. The film already has a 98% certified fresh score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing and has received four-star ratings from The Guardian and The Independent.

The film’s director, Ryan Coogler, has thanked fans for showing up to theatres to support the film. In an open letter to fans, Coogler writes: “Eternal gratitude. My heart is bursting with it. I want to thank each and every one of you who bought a ticket to see Sinners.”

Coogler goes on to say that fans were at the fore-front of his mind when making the film: “I had the gift of the opportunity of making a film inspired by my family and my ancestry but it was always a film that we wanted to make for audiences, in theatres. We always had our minds on you, the audience, and felt a deep responsibility to entertain you, and move you in the way only cinema can.”

Howe ‘Not 100 Percent’ On Newcastle Return After Pneumonia

Eddie Howe, the head of Newcastle, admitted that he is still feeling “100 percent” after a lengthy illness.

After missing his team’s Premier League games against Manchester United, Crystal Palace, and Aston Villa, Howe went to the hospital on April 11.

The 47-year-old is still recovering from helping Newcastle win their first major trophy in 56 years, but he was eager to return to his former team.

“I’m OK. Although I’m not entirely in my body, I’d like to believe that my mind is nearly entirely in focus, which is what matters most to me,” Howe told reporters on Friday.

You take your health into consideration, but I tried to take a positive out of every experience, and I think it’s really important to try to do that.

It can be very challenging when you don’t feel like you’re normal, as I have, and I certainly have.

I experienced a variety of emotions, but I feel most like I’m on the path to recovery, which is very important, and I’m delighted to be here. ”

Before last weekend’s 4-1 defeat at Villa, assistant coach Jason Tindall made a full-time start for Howe, securing victories over United and Palace.

Howe will return to St James’ Park for Saturday’s game against lowly Ipswich, where fifth-placed Newcastle is currently in the midst of a tense battle to earn a top five finish.

I was watching and getting involved for those first two games. Although I wasn’t feeling well enough to appreciate the performances, the players did a huge favor by giving us two major victories in those two games,” he said.

The staff handled and handled the game in a truly outstanding way, which is a real testament to them. Now that I’m back, I hope I can add something to the group as we enter the final five games. ”

When asked if his condition could have quickly turned into a life-threatening condition, Howe responded, “I’m one of those people, probably like most men, that you sort of go through everything. You don’t necessarily offer yourself to doctors and people but think, ‘I’ll be okay in a couple of days, I’ll fight through it.'”

So I was grateful that Paul Catterson, the doctor, intervened quickly because it could have had a different outcome without that quick intervention. ”

Howe is relieved to return to his daily routine after a while until he can begin training with his players.

He said, “I came back and it was normal service resumed, probably without running around.”

I think I will remain that way for a while, but I’m definitely returning to my normal service. I’m much more reserved physically. ”

Chelsea manager Bompastor set for ‘biggest challenge’ of career

Chelsea vs. Barcelona: Uefa Women’s Champions League

Stamford Bridge Date: Sunday, April 27th, 2019 Kick-off: 00 BST

Chelsea’s Women’s Champions League semifinal against Barcelona will be Sonia Bompastor’s “biggest challenge,” according to the actress.

After falling 4-1 in the first leg, Chelsea must overcome a three-goal deficit when the team square off at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

When Barcelona equaled their lead in the 74th minute with Sandy Baltimore’s strike, the Blues looked to have kept themselves in the tie, but they conceded twice in the final ten minutes, putting their hopes of a quadruple dream and their first European title at risk.

Bompastor, who guided Lyon to a 3-1 victory in the 2021-22 final, is familiar with defeating Barcelona, but she acknowledges that their team must face “one of the best teams in Europe.”

We just defeated Barcelona in the final when I was [Lyon] manager in 2022, which was a huge challenge, but I believe this will be the biggest managerial decision of my career.

“We need to turn the three goals up,” he said, adding that, in addition, the game is being played against one of Europe’s best teams, if not the best. It will be challenging.

Chelsea’s confidence boosted by their quarter-final victory.

Chelsea only had lost once this season before Sunday’s defeat at Barcelona.

However, Millie Bright believes that their experience will be good for Sunday given that Bompastor’s side are not used to losing, but they did overcome a two-goal deficit to defeat Manchester City in the quarter-finals.

It’s confidence, just reflecting on how well we played City at the Bridge and how well we did it, especially in the opening 45 minutes. More than 3-0, according to Bright, would have been possible.

“Crazier things have occurred,” the statement read.

After overcoming Crystal Palace 4-0 in the opening game of the second leg, Bompastor appealed to her players to show a response to Sunday’s defeat.

However, Anita Asante, a former Arsenal player, believes that reversing Barcelona’s lead is “one step too far.”

“Chelsea have experienced players who have won the Champions League along with Lucy Bronze, Keira Walsh, and the manager herself,” the manager said. They will have to carry that conviction because, she said, “they’re going to need to give it that much to give them the energy and intensity.”

Barcelona’s recent performance really showed that they are the [defending] champions for a reason.

Ellen White, a former England international, stated that preventing Barcelona’s attacking threats will be a challenge for Chelsea.

She told the Women’s Football Weekly on BBC 5 Live Sport, “It’s an uphill battle.” I believe I would laugh if you returned to Stamford Bridge with a score of 2-1. ]But] 4-1 is a lot.

“Chelsea can sort a lot of goals, but they can’t concede,” he said. Barcelona will create goals. It’s in their locker, they claim. Whether [Chelsea] can concede enough goals against Barcelona. They might be able to do that, I’m not entirely sure.

Allen makes superb 147 maximum break at Crucible

Northern Ireland’s Mark Allen compiled an incredible 147 maximum break during his World Championship last-16 match against Chris Wakelin.

Allen was trailing 10-2 at the time after losing all four previous frames in the morning session on Friday.

He went straight to the practice table in the mid-session interval and then produced snooker’s moment of perfection in the first frame after the restart.

Allen became only the 11th player to make a 147 at the Crucible. This was the 15th maximum in the main draw stage of the tournament and the first since Mark Selby’s clearance in the 2023 final.

It was Allen’s second 147 of the season, having made one during his third-round match against Ben Mertens at the British Open, and the fifth of his career.

The achievement earns Allen £45,000 and is the 217th maximum in snooker’s history.

Despite the thrill of his 147 break, the 39-year-old still faced a huge battle to keep his hopes of becoming world champion this year alive.

His match with Wakelin is a best-of-25 encounter, so the first to 13 wins. There were still three more frames to play in the middle session and, if necessary, the match would be played to a finish in the evening (from 19:00 BST).

Noel and Liam Gallagher finally seen back together for first time in years

Noel and Liam Gallagher have been pictured back working together for the first time in 16 years ahead of their eagerly awaited reunion tour. The formerly warring brothers were seen reuniting, but not in the studios as they began filming a new promo campaign for Adidas.

This summer, the pair will be back on stage in July for the Oasis Live 25 tour which was an instant sell out as millions of fans scrambled for tickets. But this week rather than make music the Gallaghers were all smiles as they were spotted arriving at a working men’s club in Newington Green, London. It’s understood they were shooting promo material for Adidas for a new collaboration between the Gallaghers and the sports brand.

In the past both Liam and Noel have released their own Adidas trainers and at Noel has spoken in the past about being obsessed with their footwear.

Liam, 52, looked in great spirits as he partnered up with his brother, dressed in a signature green parka. The frontman beamed as he rocked a freshly-shaved head. He was spotted fist-bumping security guards as he made his way into the club for the photoshoot.

Speaking on X, Liam told fans reuniting with his big brother for the shoot had been a ‘biblical’ experience. He posted: “It was more a video kind of thing like a mini film and word on the street it was BIBLICAL. I just get in and out I don’t hang around looking at the screen I’ll see it when you cats see it”

He also teased followers that he’s desperate to get back to performing live with Oasis again, “The stage is my safe space it’s where I get a bit of peace n quiet,” he penned.

Noel, 57, gave a brief smile to the cameras as he was pictured heading inside, dressed in a blue adidas jacket, slim-fit jeans and a pair of shades. Liam revealed at the weekend that the pair had spent Easter together, as they continue to put their fallout behind them.

After ending their 14-year rift last year, the brothers reunited their two families for the holidays, with Liam describing the day as ‘biblical.’ Over the Easter weekend, Liam revealed that he and Noel spent time together as a family, with Noel bringing along his teenage sons Donovan, 18, and Sonny, 14, round to see their uncle for a visit.

As the Mirror revealed earlier in April the full eagerly awaited Oasis reunion will happen next month – with band rehearsals beginning in May.

Noel has been back in the studio on his own rehearsing songs and working on new material in London. Liam and Noel will meet up with the rest of Oasis next month with a source close to Noel said there was plenty of time for rehearsals yet.

They added: “Noel is often in and out of the studio working on things, he is a singer songwriter so it’s only natural.

“But Liam is a singer and he has a long list of dates ahead of him with Oasis this year so he will not be overdoing rehearsals. After a big solo Definitely Maybe tour your last year, the main thing his voice needs at the moment is rest. He has been relaxing recently and spending time with his mum Peggy.

“The plan is for the band to start meeting up in May. They will jam around and work out a set list and Liam will be the last one to join in with the vocals. There is plenty of time and Liam is a born rock’n’roll star who has lived and breathed these songs and performed a lot of them in his own solo shows so he doesn’t need much practice.

“But the rest of the band do need to rehearse more, especially as there is a new drummer in the mix.”

Liam and Noel Gallagher are bringing in newcomer Joey Waronker on drums alongside more established former Oasis band members on guitars.

The full line up is expected to be Liam Gallagher, Noel Gallagher, Paul “Bonehead” Arthurs, Gem Archer, Andy Bell and Joey Waronker.
