Joanna Lumley reveals her strangest diva demands from food ban to dealing with secret phobia

Dame Joanna Lumley is embracing her dark side in new series of Netflix’s Wednesday show later this year, admitting it’s always ‘thrilling’ working alongside iconic Tim Burton

From sexy spy Purdey in The New Avengers to Patsy in Ab Fab, and now a starring role in Tim Burton’s Netflix smash, Wednesday – there is no stopping Joanna Lumley.

Aged 78, age is no obstacle to Dame Joanna, who loves playing Morticia’s monstrous mother Hester Frump in Burton’s gothic Addams Family drama.

The devilish part isn’t much of a stretch along the six degrees of separation from Ab Fab’s Patsy.

She says: “As Wednesday’s granny, I get to wear many, many huge wigs, one on top of the other – and lots of quite constraining clothes – so I love it. There’s always something thrilling about working for Tim Burton.”

She’s also preparing to launch her new TV travel series – Joanna Lumley’s Danube – in June on ITV.

Exploring the river from its source in Germany to its mouth in the Black Sea, she stops in Bavaria, Slovakia, Hungary, Vienna and Budapest. She visits a brewery run by nuns and stays overnight at King Charles’ “shabby chic” retreat in Transylvania – home of fictional vampire Count Dracula.

Joanna, who received her Damehood from Princess Anne in 2022, loved the King’s nature reserve retreat in the Zalan Valley, where members of the public can stay from just £120 a night.

She tells The Mirror: “It is in Romania, the most extraordinary old farm house which King Charles rescued with small farms and cottages.

“Because he loves the wildness and everything is butterflies, bees and birds. There were beautiful crops and there was a wild natural beauty about it. It was kept pretty sparse and spartan. It was quite lovely.”

Then, among the holy drinkers at the nuns’ brewery, she recalls a Sister Doris telling her: “If Jesus Christ were Bavarian he would have drank beer instead of wine”.

The new Danube travel series comes on top of Joanna’s adventures across Russia, Siberia, Japan, Berlin, Paris, Rome and India – all filmed for ITV.

She says her ancestors were well travelled and her grandfather was once a “gun runner” to the King of Bhutan.

She adds: “My grandfather was a diplomat and his remit was Bhutan and Tibet. He was invited, I like to think by King George V, to go to Bhutan which was a completely closed country in 1930, to give the very young King of Bhutan the KCIE (the Knight Commander of the Indian Empire).

“It was a huge honour. He took my grandmother and she took her dogs.

“When they arrived, they had to entertain the King and his court so they took presents from the west – and things that were useful like a box of guns. There were rifles there.”

Former Sixties model Joanna says there is no time for glamour on her travels. But playing Purdey in The New Avengers – her big break – alongside Patrick Macnee as Steed, prepared her for DIY glam.

“I remember the haircut was unbelievable,” she says, of the Purdey cut. ”I said I wanted my hair cut short and they said ‘Well, you will have to do it yourself.’ It was extraordinary.

“When I began as a model you had to do all your own make-up and your own hair, eye lashes, your own fingernails. You had to provide all your own accessories.”

She is equally resourceful when travelling – when she faces extremes of temperature and terrain.

She says: “You have to have clothes that will work. The camera does not see dirt and it does not see rain and it does not smell.

“I always take tough clothes if I have to wade through a river or something grand if I have to meet a king or a president.”

Unlike celebrities who demand champagne on tap, Joanna’s riders are as down-to-earth as her personality.

“The only thing I put on my rider when travelling is that I don’t eat meat or fish in case I get an upset tummy,” she says. “So if I am presented with meat when I visit somewhere I just say ‘Oh it is against my religion.’”

She does insist on the chance to engage with animals and not to face extreme heights.

She explains: “I always say ‘Can we please see animals’ as they do share the Earth with us.

“I won’t do heights. It harks back to the time when myself and Jennifer Saunders were at the top of a skyscraper in New York on Absolutely Fabulous.

“Being in New York, that was the worst height terror I’ve ever had. I remember we took Concorde over for the day and back again.

“We were filming at the top of this huge building and I could not leave for about 20 minutes. I just had to stand there, breathing, breathing. We were 57 stories up with Central Park spreading out in front of us. It was terrifying.”

Her fear of heights was triggered filming The New Avengers when she once had to do her own stunt by clinging onto a helicopter like Mission Impossible star Tom Cruise.

She recalls: “I had to get onto a moving helicopter. They let down a ladder. They told me to step onto the first rung and I had to hold this glass of champagne and up we went.

“I hung on and up it goes. I said ‘Where am I going?’ and they said “’Across Oxfordshire’. I was swinging underneath the helicopter for about 40 miles. My arms were dead as I was hanging on. When we landed this stunt boy said ‘You are now an honorary member of the stunt team.’

Enjoying a massively varied career since her modelling days in London’s Swinging Sixties, she’s appeared on stage and TV in everything from Steptoe & Son to Coronation Street and Are You Being Served? – also being a Bond girl alongside 007 star George Lazenby in the 1969 movie On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

Seeing it all as one big adventure, she says: “I did not want to work in an office and I decided to become a model. In those days if you were not literally dead or 4ft1 you could become a model and I had the happiest time for three whole years.

“The good thing was it was the Sixties and London was alive with photographers, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and nightclubs full of rock stars. Nobody was rich in those days, so it was fabulous.”

With no career path planned and just wanting to “do good work with good people,” she says: “In those days, as a model, you were absolutely the bottom of the pile. They knew you could not learn lines or speak.

“They knew you would be terribly vain and would not be prepared to change your look or dress up. They could not have been more wrong with me. The only thing to do is to grab, grab, grab.

“Actors are like painters and decorators. We are given a job just like a painter is told to paint a room dark purple. You do what others tell you to do and you learn a great deal from doing odd things.

“When you do get to work with giants in the business it feels as if you are playing tennis with Rafa Nadal, someone so gifted they make you feel gifted.”

And her advice?

“I say to youngsters wanting a start in this business, ‘Don’t be too special but always be on time, be prompt and learn your lines,’” she says.

She employs the same down to earth charm when travelling.

“Do not show fear, always show friendliness so you say ‘Bonjour’ to everyone you meet,” she advises.

Just going to places and talking to people in a “warts and all” fashion is, Joanna says, responsible for her travel shows’ success.

“I am a rufty tufty person so it does not matter too much,” she says, while admitting there can be challenges.

“Some of the loos I have been to defy description, as they are just holes in the ground, or they are long drops with a seat on a mountain top.

“I have seen cockroaches the size of terriers crawling across the floor!”

While Joanna says the Sistine Chapel is “the best thing I’ve ever seen,” she hopes her new show will inspire more people to find hidden treasures off the beaten track.

She says: “This world is so full of glories once you explore. I do love it when I see tourists in London look at Big Ben. I see the joy on their faces. But what is extraordinary is to get off the beaten track.”

Despite being 80 in 12 months, Joanna is not slowing down. She says: “I guess being asked if you can still cut your own toenails is a technical medical test. But I usually reply ‘No. I usually have servants.’”

She laughs, recalling an Ab Fab episode when Eddy and Patsy wore bald wigs.

“We dressed up bald,”she says. “I remember we were shooting near Reading and we were out driving dressed up as old people.

“When we stopped at the traffic lights a car pulled up beside us and someone recognised us despite all the make-up and said ‘Oh look, it’s Joanna Lumley!’”

Our political team reports that the Kremlin posted a list of the nation’s most enraged Brits while calling the country “hysterical” in response to accusations of being “hysterical” by the Kremlin. Russian officials claim that Vladimir Putin’s new “stop list” of 21 British politicians is an attempt to “demonize our country.”

This comes after the UK imposed a list of economic sanctions and bans against several Russian oligarchs and diplomats since its terror invasion of Ukraine started in 2022. The mad Kremlin accused the UK of “actively fabricating anti-Russian narratives in order to reduce Moscow’s influence on the international stage, and further pumping weapons into the neo-Nazi regime in Kyiv”.

The BBC star’s unsolved murder is unsolved thanks to the revelation of the spy chief.

In a remarkable twist in a long-running story, a former spymaster has admitted that one of his commandos carried out an attack abroad at around the time Jill Dando was killed.

Dragan Filipović was a leading member the Serbian security services when he masterminded a “secret reprisal action” in the spring of 1999 that caused “great confusion in Europe”. At the time, Milorad Ulemek, then 31, led the unit Filipović used to target opponents of brutal Serb dictator Slobadan Milosevic. The Yugoslav war was raging and UK planes were bombing Serbia when Jill was shot dead on her doorstep on April 26, 1999. Within hours of her murder, the BBC took a call claiming the death was in response.

‘They’re still in it’ – how Arsenal can beat Lyon to reach final

Getty Images

Uefa Women’s Champions League: Lyon v Arsenal

Venue: Groupama Stadium Date: Sunday, 27 April Kick-off: 17: 00 BST

Arsenal are down, but they’re definitely not out of their Women’s Champions League semi-final against eight-time winners Lyon.

The Gunners had more shots, more possession and more touches inside their opponent’s box in the first leg, but ultimately it was Lyon who left Emirates Stadium with a 2-1 lead.

Now, Renee Slegers ‘ side must overturn a deficit in France on Sunday if they are to reach their first Champions League final since 2007, the season in which they won the title.

They face a stiff task though, with Lyon unbeaten in the Champions League this season, having conceded just three goals in nine games. They have only been knocked out twice in 15 years after winning the first leg in the knockout stage and on those occasions it was to the now redundant away goals rule.

While Chelsea’s hopes of a first European trophy have been left hanging by a thread after their 4-1 first-leg defeat in Barcelona, there is belief Arsenal can still turn things around to ensure there is at least one English team in the final.

“This isn’t 4-1. It’s a completely different narrative, Arsenal are still in it. It’s a completely different conversation”, former Gunners defender Jen Beattie said.

How can Arsenal ‘ expose ‘ Lyon?

It wasn’t so long ago that Arsenal put five goals past Lyon on French soil.

Playing under Jonas Eidevall – before Slegers had joined as his assistant manager – the Gunners outclassed the reigning champions in the group stage in 2022.

Caitlin Foord, Frida Maanum and Beth Mead, who all started for Slegers on Saturday, were on the scoresheet.

But Arsenal lacked that ruthlessness against Lyon last Saturday, with Mead, Maanum, Foord and Alessia Russo missing multiple chances.

“Arsenal showed enough in this first leg to take confidence”, ex-England defender Anita Asante told the Football News Show.

“They really dominated the ball, they had control in the final third, created a number of chances and they just missed some of that cutting edge”.

Kadidiatou Diani beat Arsenal’s offside trap to get behind their defence and she made no mistake with a crisp finish for a 17th-minute opener.

And just as the hosts had pulled level through Mariona Caldentey’s spot-kick, Lyon split their backline open with Ada Hegerberg pulling Leah Williamson out of position to open up space for Melchie Dumornay, who darted into the box and lifted the ball over Manuela Zinsberger.

“Lyon under Joe Montemurro are not afraid to not have the ball. They get the goals they need, sit back and don’t seek to dominate necessarily”, Asante added.

“They’re a team that will play in transition and their players, especially in that front three, are all really dynamic and can play into space, carry the ball or threat in the box.

” I don’t think it suits Arsenal necessarily to play on the counter. They will probably assess the first 10-15 minutes of the game and adapt from there. “

Despite their first-leg defeat, Beattie does not expect Arsenal to play” very differently”.

” I think they got the press wrong once and Diani scored. I can’t think of many other times where Lyon played through from a goal kick, “she said.

” I think the Arsenal press was very, very good and if they do that again, they can go and get a result. “

Slegers said Arsenal must be wary of” a lot of threats”, but that her side have the ability to” expose “Lyon.

Three key battles Arsenal must win

Lyon attacking thirds graphic - 48% attacking touches down right side

With a front three made up of Diani, Dumornay and Tabitha Chawinga, Lyon are never going to be easy to contain.

Arsenal’s full-back Katie McCabe, usually seen powering up and down the left flank, was more reserved when pitted against the rapid Diani in the first leg.

The winger found space by drifting infield between McCabe and Steph Catley and it was this movement that gifted Lyon the first goal, with Ellie Carpenter threading the ball through Arsenal’s defence to put Diani one-on-one with Zinsberger.

Post-match Lyon boss Montemurro said that was a key tactic they had identified to restrict McCabe’s impact.

” Of course, I respect Diani and the whole Lyon team because of what they’ve achieved, but also we know our qualities and our strengths, especially going forward, “McCabe said.

One of the key questions for Slegers ‘ side before the second leg is whether Wendie Renard will be back in the starting XI to make her 500th appearance for Lyon.

The 6ft 2in defender – known for her aerial prowess – was on the bench on Saturday after recovering from a foot injury.

” Crosses in the box were really effective]and] I think that’s where Arsenal’s best chances came from, but if Renard is back it is a different game, different tactics, “Beattie said.

“]Arsenal will] have to play more passes in and around the box and break them down. “

Arsenal scored all three of their goals from crosses during their second-leg comeback against Real Madrid in the quarter-finals, but they failed to make any of their 25 crosses count in the first leg against Lyon.

Alessia Russo touch map v Lyon

Mariona Caldentey knows what it takes to win the Champions League.

The Spaniard won three European titles in four years with Barcelona before moving to Arsenal in July, and she’s carried that winning mentality into this season.

Having scored in Arsenal’s comeback against Real Madrid, Caldentey kept cool under the pressure to convert from the penalty spot against Lyon – her eighth goal involvement in this season’s Champions League.

But it’s not just her ability in attack that has helped Arsenal this term. The midfielder won more duels (nine) and tackles (three) than any other player in the first leg as she helped Arsenal dominate possession.

However, Caldentey is up against another serial winner in Lindsey Heaps – known as Lindsey Horan before switching to her married name – in the middle of the park..

Gregg Wallace’s mum dies as he shares heartache over her last days ‘witnessing my disgrace’

Gregg Wallace, a former MasterChef host, announced the passing of his beloved mother as a result of his decision to leave the BBC series due to historical misconduct allegations.

Gregg Wallace, a former MasterChef host, has revealed that his mother passed away earlier this year. The 60-year-old claims that his mother Mary Pettman, 80, was “picking on” him at the height of his scandal when she spoke in a new interview.

“She was always very proud of me. I’m her eldest boy and, of course, I was on the telly. I think it’s terribly sad that in the last days of her life she was reading horrible things about me and witnessing my disgrace,” he says. Gregg stepped back from hosting BBC series MasterChef in November while complaints from 13 women about historical allegations of misconduct were investigated.

Penny Lancaster made grave allegations about being a victim of bullying and harassment by Wallace while participating in Celebrity MasterChef, and this news came after she made these claims.

However, Wallace backtracked, claiming that “a few middle-class women of a certain age” were to blame. Many people, including Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy and Prime Minister Keir Starmer, criticize his remarks.

Wallace says he has experienced suicidal thoughts over recent months since the scandal broke and reflects on his mother’s passing. “Mum was a spiritualist. I was always sceptical but I’m really hoping she was right. I hope she’s up there looking down and sees my recovery,” he adds. In the interview with the Daily Mail, it’s reported that Wallace’s mother was cremated last month.

After Wallace left his position as host of the BBC One cooking show, it was made known in November that the show’s production company, Banijay UK, was looking into past allegations of misconduct. It is entirely false that Wallace engages in sexually harassing behavior, according to Wallace’s attorneys’ previous statements to the BBC.

A number of allegations against Wallace led to the cancellation of the most recent MasterChef: The Professionals series, but two MasterChef celebrity Christmas specials, a Celebrity MasterChef Christmas Cook Off and a Strictly Festive Extravaganza, were dropped from the BBC’s schedule in December.

Grace Dent, a food critic, will take Wallace’s place on Celebrity MasterChef starting in January. The 51-year-old author and podcaster, who has hosted episodes of MasterChef on a regular basis, will judge alongside John Torode for the upcoming 20th series of the celebrity edition.

Dent described her new role on ITV’s This Morning as “absolutely amazing.” I’m already intoxicated, to be honest. You can feel that warmth when you enter the audience for one of the most wonderful British TV programs.

You can’t ever eat anywhere in your own backyard. Without people saying “I can’t believe she bought that,” you can’t even enter a supermarket. It is therefore lovely. Moving to this position was a dream come true because I now have a lot.

She would offer her opinion on the cooking of the contestants in her previous role on the show without having to bring them home. I’m that person now, after all. She said, “I don’t enjoy doing that because I’m the baddie now.”

“I believe that people want it to be bad so I can write horrible things when I go out for dinner.” I absolutely don’t. Sending people home is horrible, and I want the best for these people.

‘Ciao Papa’: Rome gears up to bid farewell to Pope Francis

Crowds have filled St Peter’s Square in the Vatican since the pope’s death was announced on Monday, and the entire city-state is abuzz with activity.

Many visitors have viewed Pope Francis’s body, which has been lying in state since Wednesday, while others appear content to take a selfie in front of the towering Tuscan colonnades that border the plaza.

Teams of ambulance personnel, mounted police officers, members of the Swiss Guard – the Vatican’s own army – and Italian special forces, some of whom carry intimidating-looking anti-drone weapons, line the plaza.

In St Peter’s Square, Al Jazeera spoke to people from many countries, including Morocco, Kenya, and the US.

Some had travelled to Rome upon hearing news of the pope’s death, but many were either living in or visiting Rome. Some had extended their stay so they could attend the funeral.

Francisco Horfa, a 33-year-old theology student from the Southeast Asian nation of East Timor, was in Rome to be ordained as a deacon on May 7.

He proudly waved the red, yellow, and black East Timor flag with a compatriot in the plaza as he described this period of mourning as “emotional and full of prayer”.

He said the pope had visited his home country in September and had left a “great impression” on its people.

About half of the nation’s 1.3 million population was reported to have attended his mass on the outskirts of the capital Dili, as he celebrated the nation for its reconciliation with its neighbour Indonesia, from which it achieved independence in 2002.

Annalia Alia, a 69-year-old woman from the Philippines and a devout Catholic, had seen Pope Francis when he visited the Southeast Asian country in 2015.

Now, 10 years later, she had seen his body lying in an open wooden coffin at St Peter’s Basilica’s main altar.

“It feels like everything has come full circle, I saw him in life and now I saw him in death”, she said. It had been an “indescribable and emotional experience”, she added.

She had come to Rome for the Jubilee, when pilgrims from around the world travel to the city to seek spiritual renewal.

During the Jubilee year, the Holy Doors at Rome’s four major papal basilicas are opened, allowing pilgrims to pass through them to receive a plenary indulgence (a forgiveness of sins).

Flanked by her two daughters, she said she felt fortunate to have been in Rome when the pope died, but wanted to go to her hotel to rest, as she felt overwhelmed.

Ernest Damasco, a 55-year-old pilgrim also from the Philippines, said he had come to Rome “with the hope of seeing the pope wave from the balcony (overlooking St Peter’s Square), but instead it feels like I have lost a father, a great leader who was inspirational to me”.

“Like,]I’m] happy you’re looking forward to seeing me when I leave here,]I’m] glad to see you too, but babe, give me a little something.
