Romania’s PM resigns after far right wins first round of presidential vote

A day after a far-right opposition leader won the first round of the rerun of the presidential election, his own candidate was eliminated.

Cabinet ministers will serve in an interim capacity until a new majority emerges following the presidential run-off, according to Ciolacu’s statement on Monday. His center-left Social Democratic Party (PSD) will withdraw from the pro-Western coalition, effectively ending it.

In a May 18 run-off against Bucharest Mayor Nicusor Dan, an independent centrist, hard-right eurosceptic George Simion will be in the endgame. He won the election on Sunday, with some 41% of the vote. Third-place finisher Crin Antonescu was the coalition candidate.

I chose to resign myself, according to Ciolacu, rather than the future president.

In a December 1 parliamentary election, Simion’s Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) and two other far-right organizations, one of which had vehemently supported Russia, won more than a third of the seats.

To aid in keeping the European Union and NATO on a pro-Western trajectory, the Social Democrats had established a coalition government with the center-right Liberals and the ethnic Hungarian UDMR. Without it, the legislature can create a governing majority that disarms the far-right.

After a party meeting, Ciolacu told reporters, “This coalition is no longer legitimate.”

Prior to the meeting, Ciolacu claimed that a common candidate must be chosen in order to form the coalition.

Up until the May 18 run-off, Romania already has a temporary president. The nation faces the biggest budget deficit in the EU and is at risk of having its ratings dropped to levels where they were before.

Five months prior, a first election attempt was canceled due to alleged Russian interference in the favor of far-right candidate Calin Georgescu, who has since been suspended from office.

If Georgescu is elected, Simion has stated that he has the power to choose him as prime minister. The vote highlights the persistent rage that is roiling among Romania’s electorate over high living costs and security concerns.

According to political observers, a victory in the Simion could destabilize NATO’s eastern flank, where Bucharest plays a significant role in providing logistical support to Ukraine as it fights a three-year-old Russian invasion.

At a time when Europe is grappling with how to respond to US President Donald Trump, it would also increase the number of eurosceptic leaders in the EU that currently includes the Hungarian and Slovak prime ministers.

In a prerecorded speech aired on Sunday after the polls closed, Simion declared, “I am here to restore constitutional order.”

“I want normalcy, I want democracy, and I have one goal: to give back to the Romanian people what was taken from them,” he said, placing the common, sincere, and dignified people at the center of decision-making.

Simion referred to Trump’s “perfectly aligned with the MAGA movement” as Simion’s hard-right nationalist AUR party.
Following the US president’s political resumption, the “Make America Great Again” campaign capitalizes on a growing populist wave in Europe.

Laura Anderson has revealed she’s facing a particularly tough chapter of motherhood, as her 18-month-old daughter Bonnie enters a phase of hitting, biting, and scratching – leaving the reality star at her wits’ end.

In a candid Instagram post, the former Love Island contestant, 36, shared a moment many parents will relate to. Sitting with her toddler perched on her lap, Laura gently encouraged her daughter to greet the camera: “Say good morning,” she cooed.

Bonnie, however, had other ideas: Laura stifled the swipe with her own as she swing her hand toward her mother.

“Right, do we hit,” you ask? Bonnie responded with a straightforward “no,” as Laura asked firmly. “No. Do you wish to apologize? She continued to advise her on using “gentle hands.” Bonnie eventually fell into her mother’s arms and accepted a quiet “sorry” despite initially refusing to cuddle.

Laura continued to be patient in the caption, acknowledging that parenting at this point has taken a toll on her patience, even as the exchange ended sweetly. “The hitting, biting, and scratching is phenomenal atm. She blatantly wrote, “My patience has ended.

Laura welcomed Bonnie with Celebs Go Dating co-star Gary Lucy

Following a turbulent relationship with actor Gary Lucy, Laura and Bonnie were expecting in September 2023. Despite making a few brief attempts to revive the romance, Laura has largely raised Bonnie solo. Gary’s involvement in his daughter’s life has been the subject of a public sparring between the two partners.

Laura and Clark Robertson, both of whom played football in Scotland, have recently fallen in love, but it hasn’t been easy to raise a child in the public eye.

Online critics, particularly ‘mum shamers, frequently target her. After receiving a nasty message in March, Laura admitted she had been left teary-eyed because she had a day off with Bonnie while she was staying with her grandmother.

Not long after, she received another criticism, this time for accompanying Bonnie to see Clark play for Dundee FC. And earlier this year, she sparked even more outcry for letting her young child travel by using a first-class cabin to stretch her legs.

Despite the scrutiny, Laura continues to speak with unfiltered honesty about parenting’s benefits and drawbacks.

Pregnant Arabella Chi reveals she’s ‘trying to hold in’ giving birth – 3 weeks before due date

While she’s excited to become a mother later this month, Arabella Chi has revealed that she has been having “pep talks” with her bump to prevent premature birth.

Arabella Chi claims she has been having ‘pep talks’ with her bump to prevent her from giving birth too soon, even though she is eager to become a mother later this month.

While most expectant mums are keen to give birth just weeks away from their due date, Arabella Chi says she’s desperately trying to keep her little one from arriving early.

Admitting that her boyfriend, businessman Billy Henty, is currently away from home, the former Love Island star exclusively told Mirror : “My boyfriend, Billy, is actually away in LA right now, so I’m trying to keep her in until he gets back. I’ve been having little pep talks with the bump.”

The 34-year-old is currently pregnant with her first child, a baby girl, and is less than three weeks away from her due date. Chatting over lunch during the Carmex Pots and Prosecco event at London’s Somerset House, Arabella admits she’s feeling like it’s come around fast.

I’ve only just begun packing my hospital bag because I’m a little unprepared. She’s really low, according to what I had for an appointment yesterday.

The actress continued that the labor itself is a scary prospect even though she is obviously excited to be giving birth. One of those things that I’m still trying to avoid thinking about is this. However, I’m starting to realize that this baby is about to come out. Therefore, it can be a little nerve-wracking,” Arabella said.

At the end of the sentence, she continued, “You’ve got the baby.” It is entirely worthwhile. You’re not pushing anyone, you’re just in pain, right?

For the luncheon bash, which also featured Love Island star Samie Elishi, TV personality Ashley James, and influencer Louise Pentland, Arabella was glam-dyed.

During our interview at Somerset House in London, Arabella and I had lunch at Carmex’s Pots and Prosecco.

However, since Arabella is only weeks away from giving birth, it’s no wonder she struggles to find lavish lunches and celeb parties. She claims the true nesting process has already begun. I need to begin winding down because I’m not very good at doing so! She laughed, “I’m actually really tired right now, it’s getting that.”

After her second season of Love Island: All Stars, which was her second appearance on the reality series, Arabella and her partner Billy have been together for about a year.

She admits that meeting Billy and becoming pregnant later in the year, which she admits was more of a shock to herself than anyone else, have transformed her life. She admitted, “I would have laughed in your face if you had told me a year ago that I would be having a baby.”

But brimming with excitement to be a mum, Arabella celebrated with a baby shower back in March, during which she revealed the pregnancy was ‘extra special’ due to her battle with PCOS.

Due to hormonal imbalances that prevent ovulation, PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) can make it difficult to conceive.

She once said, “It was magical when I found out I was pregnant.” I’m not sure if I’ll be able to have more children, so she’s special because of my PCOS.

French minister apologises to Liverpool fans over Champions League chaos

France’s former interior minister has apologised for the first time for the 2022 fiasco at the Stade de France which saw Liverpool football supporters wrongly blamed for a riot.

Gérald Darmanin admitted that security arrangements for the Champions League final between Liverpool and Real Madrid were wrong, and that his first public remarks – blaming English fans – were a mistake.

“It was a failure because I had not foreseen. That was a mistake on my part. I was led astray by my preconceptions,” said Darmanin, now France’s justice minister.

Police used tear gas on Liverpool supporters as they tried to enter the stadium in Paris. Some fans were also ambushed and mugged by gangs of French youths.

In a lengthy interview on the Legend YouTube channel, Darmanin said the night was “the biggest failure” of his career.

“What I did not appreciate that evening was that the real problem was not coming from English supporters, but from delinquents who were robbing fans.

“Our security arrangements were not designed for that eventuality. We had riot police … with big boots and shields – not great for running. What you need against that kind of delinquency is officers in running shoes.

“We got our arrangements wrong. We were expecting a war of (football) hooligans, and what we got instead was muggers.”

In their first comments after the problems, Darmanin and police chief Didier Lallement said the dangerous crush at the stadium was largely caused by Liverpool fans in possession of fake tickets.

In another section of the interview, Darmanin said that there was “no longer any safe place” in France – a comment that drew fire from the hard-right opposition.

“What a lot of French people can see is that (violence) has become general, it has metastasised. It’s no longer only in the places where you once looked for potential problems.

“Nowadays you can see that the tiniest country village has experience of cocaine or cannabis.”

National Rally MP Jean-Philippe Tanguy noted that Darmanin has been in government since President Emmanuel Macron’s first election in 2017.

Tungay said he was “treating the French like imbeciles, making all these so-called tough declarations when the record is so catastrophic”.

Darmanin, who is 42 and from the political right, did nothing in the interview to dispel speculation that he might be in the running to replace Macron in 2027.

“Do I think of the presidential election? The answer is yes,” he said.
