Ospreys have announced Adam Beard will leave at the end of the season, with the Wales lock expected to join French side Montpellier.

Beard is out of contract at the Welsh region this summer and is set to join the French Top 14 side, although the move is yet to be officially confirmed.

The 29-year-old, who has played 58 internationals for Wales and one Test for the British and Irish Lions, made his Ospreys debut as an 18-year-old in 2014 and has played 139 games for his home-city side.

Flanker Justin Tipuric is set to miss his home farewell before he retires at the end of the season.

‘A special place’

Beard says it was difficult to decide to leave Ospreys having “loved” his time at the region.

“I grew up being an Ospreys supporter and I was lucky enough to have come through the academy system and then progress to the first team,” he added.

“I have had lots of conversations with my family, friends and the coaches here, and feel like this is the right time to venture into a new challenge for myself and my family.

Elite professional

Ospreys head coach Mark Jones says Beard will be missed and hopes the next generation of locks can fill the void.

“Beardy’s influence has been ever present in his time at the Ospreys,” said Jones.

“He will leave a big hole as a player, a set-piece expert and a leader.

“The Ospreys have historically placed a high importance on having a strong front five and he has been a key contributor in that for a long time. He’s an elite professional but most of all, a great person.”

Jones added that while Beard’s presence will be missed, Ospreys have “high hopes” for a number of younger locks at the region.

“His departure will provide an opportunity for those boys, along with any new additions we have, to step up as leaders,” he added.

EU slaps Meta, Apple with nearly $800m fines

The European Union has fined Apple and Meta a combined 700 million euros (nearly $800m) for breaching the bloc’s landmark Digital Markets Act (DMA), the first time sanctions have been issued under the new regulation designed to rein in the power of Big Tech firms.

Apple was hit with a 500-million-euro ($570m) penalty for restricting how app developers communicate with users about alternative sales and offers.

Meta was fined 200 million euros (nearly $230m) for its controversial “pay or consent” model, which forces users in the EU to either pay for ad-free access to Facebook and Instagram or consent to targeted advertising.

The penalties follow a yearlong investigation by the European Commission, the EU’s executive body, into whether the companies were complying with the DMA, which came into force last year.

Alongside its fine, Apple has received a cease-and-desist order requiring it to make further changes to its App Store operations by late June. If the company fails to comply, the Commission could impose daily penalties for continued breaches.

Officials are also reviewing changes Meta introduced late last year to assess whether its updated model now satisfies the regulation.

The Commission stressed that Wednesday’s fines are procedural in nature and are significantly smaller than penalties previously issued under the EU’s antitrust rules, which aim to encourage competition and break up companies it views as having a monopoly in the single market.

Last year, Apple was fined 1.8 billion euros ($2.05bn) for abusing its dominant position in music streaming, while Meta was fined 797 million euros ($909m) for promoting its classified advertisements service on its social media platforms.

But the continued enforcement of the regulations risks escalating tensions with Washington, where President Donald Trump has previously threatened further tariffs against countries that penalise United States companies.

In February, the White House warned it would consider countermeasures in response to the bloc’s digital regulations, which includes the DMA, and the separate Digital Services Act, a law targeting disinformation online.

But inside the US, pressure is also mounting on Big Tech. Meta is currently on trial over accusations it stifled competition through its acquisitions, which could force it to sell Instagram and WhatsApp.

Apple and Amazon are also facing antitrust lawsuits, while Google has suffered two major defeats in the past year over its dominance in internet search and digital advertising.

Meta said it is likely to appeal the European Commission’s ruling, describing the decision as a targeted attack on American firms.

Sophie Nyweide’s family ‘couldn’t save her from her fate’ as they faced tragic decision

At the age of 24, Sophie Nyweide, who appeared in a number of Hollywood films, passed away. The young actress’s family revealed that she had struggled recently as police continue to investigate.

Sophie Nyweide was a bona fide child star. The actress starred in a slew of TV shows and movies as a youngster, most notably 2009’s romantic drama Mammoth, in which she played the daughter of Michelle Williams and Gale Garcia Bernal and 2010’s An Invisible Sign, playing the child of Jessica Alba.

By while Sophie achieved huge success onscreen, away from the cameras her life sadly went onto unravel. And in a moving obituary this week, the star’s loved ones announced she had died on April 14 at the age of 24.

Sophie’s family said she was “happiest on a movie set, becoming someone else”. “It was a safe place for her and she relish from the casts and crews who nourished her talent and her well being,” they added. “Sadness, loss, heartbreak and even anger is present for those who loved her and now will have to continue on without her laughter, infectious passion and zest – without those amazing blue eyes that could look directly into one’s soul.”

The relatives claimed they could not save their “kind and trusting girl” and that she had experienced trauma in her short life, citing the need for “all of us to protect our children and do better.” They had been unable to assist Sophie because she had turned down treatment while trying to deal with her struggles alone.

“She self-medicated to deal with all the trauma and shame she held inside and it resulted in her death,” the obituary read. “She repeatedly said she would ‘handle it’ on her own and was compelled to reject the treatment that might possibly have saved her life.”

Reports from the US revealed Sophie’s body had been found on a riverbank close to a makeshift shelter in the town of Bennington in Vermont. Authorities are said to have stated Sophie did not live in the shelter but was hanging out there with other people. As police await the results of an autopsy which could take up to eight weeks, they are said to be investigating several possible causes for her death.

By the age of 10, the American actress had already made seven appearances in films before turning to art as a coping mechanism. Sadly, it was unsuccessful. Her family said that “She wrote and drew voraciously,” and that a large portion of her work “demystifies the depth she had and also depicts the pain she endured.” Many of her writings and works of art represent her struggles and traumatic experiences.

Even with those plans, diagnoses, and revelations, those closest to her, as well as therapists, law enforcement officers, and others who tried to assist her are heartbroken that their efforts could not save her from her fate.

Sophie’s mother, Shelly Gibson, was an actress and she wanted to pursue the same profession after discovering a love of movies. She said she spent her childhood in this theater, where she slept, had a small bed in the projection booth, and watched numerous movies.

Sophie later begged her grandmother to become an actress after the smash hit film Something’s Gotta Give, which is said to have particularly influenced her. She won the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2006 for her lead role in the film Bella, which became her dream come true.

Law & Order was a year later, along with the movies And Then Came Love and New York Serenade. What Would You Do, an ABC hidden camera show, was Sophie’s final on-screen role in 2015 that she held.

Her devastated family cried, “A life ended too soon.” May it not be wasted. May we all take advantage of her brief time here and continue to improve. Yes, we must all take better care of our children.

Sophie’s family urged her loved ones and supporters to donate to the RAINN charity, which promotes anti-sexual violence activism and promotes laws that bring justice and hold those responsible for crimes committed against women.

Fergie’s heartbreaking admission about devastating double cancer diagnosis

Duchess of York, Sarah, spoke with Sarah about her battles with cancer in an interview, and she also warned the government about neglecting young people who have been given the disease.

Fergie has admitted her mind went to “dark places” as a “bomb went off in her life” following a double cancer diagnosis. The Duchess of York was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023 and then skin cancer the next year.

Now she is using her experience to back a campaign warning the government against neglecting teenagers with cancer in its upcoming national health plans for the disease. The ex-wife of the Duke of York has signed an open letter to Health Secretary Wes Streeting calling for faster diagnoses, better access to clinical trials and improved mental health support for young people with cancer.

Writing in The Times, Sarah added that her cancer diagnoses felt like a “bomb going off in my life”. She also said that while she received support, many young people were left “to struggle alone with the dark thoughts”.

The duchess now remarked that health policies that don’t consider teenagers who have the disease can have “devastating” and “tragic” effects.

She stated, “I have had two diagnoses. I believe it is crucial for me to find new ways to hear and experience cancer patients who receive less attention, aren’t heard, and are susceptible to being overlooked.

Teenagers and young adults with cancer are one group that is consistently overlooked when creating health plans and policies. The effects are potentially devastating.

On Wednesday, Fergie endorsed the #AndYoungPeople campaign from the Teenage Cancer Trust and wrote an open letter to Mr. Streeting asking that teenagers be taken into consideration for the national cancer plan for England. The Duchess, who has long been a supporter of the charity, wrote: “They find themselves in a system that isn’t designed for young people and continue to suffer enormous disadvantages. “

She also mentioned talking to teenagers who had been “fobbed” off by health professionals despite displaying a range of symptoms, and that the results can be tragic.

In February, the Department of Health and Social Care launched a request for evidence to inform a national cancer plan. The plan will improve cancer care by enhancing research, improving screening, and treating patients, as well as looking at ways to help prevent the disease, as it is anticipated later this year. Teenagers and young adults were “often overlooked,” according to Kate Collins, CEO of the Teenage Cancer Trust.

She continued, “The Government has a great opportunity right now to significantly improve the health of a generation, a change that will have a real impact on their commitment to tackling the biggest killers and creating a UK where everyone lives longer, healthier lives.”

Fergie underwent an operation in 2023 after she discovered she had an early form of breast cancer during a routine mammogram. Months later, she was diagnosed with malignant melanoma skin cancer. It came at the same time King Charles and the Princess of Wales also received cancer diagnoses and underwent treatment.

Bri and Demari have each independently verified their single status on social media.
