Romania’s far-right candidate Georgescu barred from May presidential vote

Romania’s central election authority has banned far-right pro-Russian candidate Calin Georgescu from running in the country’s May presidential election re-run, triggering protests from Georgescu’s supporters.

The decision, announced on Sunday, is not yet legally binding, and is expected to be appealed, with Romania’s Constitutional Court deciding on an appeal by Wednesday.

The far-right candidate unexpectedly won the first round of the country’s presidential election on November 24.

Shortly before the run-off, the Constitutional Court cancelled the first round due to irregularities in campaign financing pinned on Russian meddling, with the election rescheduled for May 4.

After the election authority’s decision, about 300 of Georgescu’s supporters gathered outside the election bureau shouting “freedom”! and tried to force their way through the security cordon.

Georgescu denounced the election authority’s move on X as “a direct blow to the heart of democracy worldwide”.

He is currently leading opinion polls with about 40 percent of the vote.

Allegations of Russian interference

Georgescu submitted his candidacy for the May ballot re-run on Friday despite doubts that he would be allowed to run.

Romania’s highest court annulled the ballot two days before the second round of voting in December, citing allegations of Russian interference in Georgescu’s favour, which Moscow has denied.

Georgescu had denounced the annulment as a “formalised coup d’etat”. In recent weeks, tens of thousands of people have also protested against the decision.

Members of US President Donald Trump’s administration called Romania’s cancelled election an example of European governments suppressing freedom of speech and political opponents.

Tech billionaire and Trump adviser Elon Musk called the election authority’s decision “crazy” on his social media platform X.

Georgescu is under criminal investigation on six counts, including membership in a fascist organisation and communicating false information about campaign financing.

He has denied all wrongdoing.

Gary Neville gives fans ‘unexpected treat’ as he joins The Reytons for huge performance

Former footballer Gary Neville left fans shocked when he joined a huge band on stage.

The Sky Sports pundit is no stranger when it comes to working with Rotherham-based band The Reytons having teased fans last year that he would be joining them on stage. At the time, Neville, 50, joked that he was taking the place of bassist Lee Holland who was suffering from a broken arm.

But as the South Yorkshire band headlined Aviva Studios in Manchester, it appeared that Gary was keen to carry on with his involvement with the band. The former Manchester United legend stepped out on stage on Saturday night, equipped with a bass guitar in his hand.

It came months after speculation over whether the England defender would actually appear on the stage with the band following their viral video in September last year. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, the band shared an electrifying video of the moment and fans couldn’t contain their excitement.

Captioning their upload, the band penned: “Reytons X Gary Neville. Manchester!!! Last night was unbelievable… What a way to end the tour!! Thank you to every single one of you who joined us across the UK and Ireland… It’s been incredible! Thanks to our amazing team of family and friends for all the hard work, commitment, late nights and early mornings!! From pubs to arenas… Who’d have thought it”?

Fans instantly rushed to the replies, with one penning: “What a f***ing night”! A second went on to add: “Amazing night as always. But what an unexpected treat to see @GNev2 on stage. Absolute riot”! “This is ace”, commented a third. Meanwhile, a fourth typed: “Let Gary be at Tramlines”, following the news that the band will be headlining the Sheffield festival later this year.

Gary joined the lads on stage for their hit, Low Life, with the 5, 000 audience members at the sold out show instantly going wild. Following the performance, frontman Jonny Yerrell said: “He is honestly one of the most down-to-earth and nicest people we’ve ever had the pleasure of working with”.

Reflecting on their Grassroots Foundation initiative, Jonny went on to add: “Last year, we launched our foundation and provided full football kits to 50 grassroots teams. We’re planning to do even more this year”! But it wasn’t just Gary’s cameo that received praise during the show.

The band have rallied behind Sophie White, 22, from their hometown, who is battling a brain tumour. Days before their performance, they announced they’d be raffling off the sign from their headline show at Clifton Park with Crowdfunder. Sophie who was in attendance at the show discovered that they had raised an eye-watering £10, 000 in just two days. The crucial funds will allow Sophie to travel to Germany to undergo potentially life saving treatment on Monday.

Last year when the band announced their tour, they shared a hilarious video on social media holding auditions for Lee’s role, with Gary admitting he was “nervous” but “ready” for the action as he took to the stage. After being asked why he thinks he could be good for the role, Gary says: “If Lee can play for The Reytons, then so can I”. The clip then shows bandmates asking Gary to show off his dance moves, dietary requirements and also how fast he can drink a pint of beer. He is then challenged to game of Higher or Lower, before undergoing a blind taste test, successfully grabbing a greasy burger meal over a salad.

After passing all the tests, Jonny tells Neville: “You’ve literally ticked every box there pal. But I think the only question is now, you know, what’re you actually like on bass”? The sports icon added: “I’ve never played bass in my life”. Moments after Jonny admitted: “You’re in”.

‘We need more Brunos’ – Fernandes ‘steps up all the time’ for Man Utd

Getty Images

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim feels the club would not be in their current mess if they had more players like Bruno Fernandes.

The United captain led from the front in the 1-1 draw with Arsenal at Old Trafford.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta admitted the Portuguese was “too clever for us and the referee” for the way he manipulated the positioning of his first-half free-kick to give him a better chance to put United in front.

Former United skipper Roy Keane might not be a fan given the manner in which the Irishman spoke of Fernandes on The Overlap podcast last week.

But Amorim wishes he had a few more like him.

“We need more Brunos, that is clear”, he said.

“It’s not just the quality and the character. He makes some mistakes but he is so decisive with and without the ball.

” He steps up all the time. He can show some frustration in some moments that can hurt him more than everyone. I understand that. He wants to win.

How important is Fernandes to United?

Fernandes is now United’s top Premier League goalscorer this season with seven. His 12 in all competitions also puts him at the head of United’s scoring charts.

But it doesn’t end there.

In a United side that is 14th in the table, Fernandes has 14 goal involvements in the league. Unsurprisingly, that is more than anyone else.

But only Amad has more than Marcus Rashford’s five, which underlines how important the 30-year-old has been in keeping United away from getting in real trouble at the bottom of the table.

Since he made his United debut in February 2020, only Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (177) and Tottenham’s Son Heung-min (124) have been involved in more goals than Fernandes (109).

It is clear Amorim needs Fernandes in the short and medium term as he looks to improve results, while at the same time making United a more attractive team to watch.

The home side had 31.8% possession against Arsenal, continuing a theme that has continued since Jose Mourinho’s time at the club where their best results are achieved when they play on the counter-attack.

On a day when United fans protested in huge numbers against the club’s ownership, Amorim is desperate to change that.

“When you coach Manchester United, you cannot play too much like that”, he told Sky Sports. “You have to try to win the game.

” This club will never die. That is clear. This is a big business and maybe all the fans in this league sometimes feel it us harder to go to the games and pay for tickets.

Saraki Cautions Akpabio Against Politicising Call For Due Process In Senate

Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki has described as “cheap politics and trivialising of a serious issue” the claim by incumbent Senate President, Godswill Akpabio that the call on him to ensure that transparent and open process is instituted to investigate the accusation levelled against him by one of his colleagues, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, is an attempt to remove a Niger Delta person from office.

Saraki, in a statement signed by Yusuph Olaniyonu, the head of his media office in Abuja, urged Akpabio to read his press statement dated March 1st, 2025, very well to understand that there was nowhere he suggested the resignation of the Senate President.

“Rather, he advised that Akpabio should act in the best interest of the legislative institution by ensuring that no reasonable person is left with any doubt about the fact that the allegations raised by the Senator were investigated and justifiably dispensed with.

” The attention of the Abubakar Bukola Saraki Media Office has been drawn to the statement made by Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio while addressing the leaders of some “youth ethnic groups” on Friday that certain individuals from Kwara and Adamawa States want him removed because he is from the Niger Delta region.

“Ordinarily, Dr. Saraki would have ignored the statement as a sign of the times in which we now live. However, its underlying motive of politicising and trivialising a serious issue that threatens the integrity, credibility, and importance of the legislature is the reason why we think we should not allow the Senate President to create a misleading impression of the issue at stake in the all-important institution that the National Assembly represents in our democracy.

” Dr. Saraki in his last comment on the Akpabio-Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan crisis never called on the Senate President to resign or step aside. Rather, he urged the Senate President to be conscious of the fact that perception is reality and therefore he should avoid treating the allegations by the Senator in a manner that will create the perception that the Senate as an institution is trying to cover up issues bothering on sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and abuse of office.

“Also, Dr. Saraki made it clear that his intervention was neither about Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan nor whether her claim was right or not. He stated that since the Senator has gone public with such serious allegations against the presiding officer, the image of the institution should be saved through an honest, sincere, open, transparent, and unbiased investigation.

” In that press statement, he also pointed out that there are already existing processes recommended in the Constitution, laws of the land, Senate rules, conventions, and precedents to be followed in carrying out such investigation.

“Again, Dr. Saraki is of the firm belief that his suggestions are for the benefit of the legislative institution. So, he will repeat the same suggestion no matter where the Senate President comes from and whichever party he belongs to. It is not because the incumbent is a member of the APC, that the former Senate President is from the PDP or that the former is from the South-South zone while the latter is from the North Central zone. Far from it. It is disingenuous and crude to describe Dr. Saraki’s comment along those primordial lines.

” This issue is definitely not one in which Akpabio should exploit ethnic sentiments, political division, or regional proclivity. This will neither be in his own interest or that of the institution over which he is presiding. He should face the reality on ground and do what is right.

“The former Senate President believes that when a sensitive matter suggesting sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and mistreatment of women comes up anywhere, it evokes the pains that thousands of women across the nooks and crannies of our society experience daily. Thus, when it is raised in a place like the legislative institution, it is an opportunity for us to handle it with utmost openness and transparency to ensure that justice is not only done but glaringly seen to be done.

” Once again, Dr. Saraki stands by and maintains his earlier suggestion to Akpabio and the Senate leadership on the allegations raised by the Senator from Kogi State. An open, transparent, and honest investigation of the allegations is still needed to ensure that the Senate is not cast in the image of an institution that is tolerant of sexual harassment, gender bias, victimisation and mistreatment of women, abuse of office, and enthronement of the culture of silence. By having such an investigation, the general public and the international community will have more confidence in our legislative institution.

“People like Dr. Saraki have made huge sacrifices in defending the integrity of the legislative institution and will not desist in speaking up for the right thing to be done. May God bless our institutions and our country”.

The dispute which started in the Red Chambers with seat arrangement escalated, with Natasha accusing Akpabio of sexual harassment, a claim the latter has denied.

Dancing On Ice studio ‘in tears’ as fans emotional over Torvill and Dean’s last performance

The “final” skating routine of Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean on TV had some fans emotional tonight.

Jayne, 67, and Christopher, 66, previously announced plans to retire after having skated together for decades. The pair – who won gold at the Olympics in 1984 for their routine to Maurice Ravel’s Boléro – skated together for the last time on TV for the finale of Dancing on Ice’s latest series, which aired on ITV earlier this evening, ahead of their final tour.

They took to the ice for a performance that was set to Lighthouse Family’s song Lifted. Jayne and Christopher was seen in co-ordinated purple outfits, seemingly in a nod to their costumes for their iconic Boléro routine more than 40 years ago. They were also joined by professional skaters from DOI, who sported the same colour with their outfits.

Viewers saw Jayne and Christopher skate together before briefly standing by the side of the rink as they watched the other pros perform in front of them. The pair joined them moments later to continue the routine, which ended with the two judges being lifted up by colleagues. They later bowed as Stephen Mulhern said: “The legendary Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean”. Holly Willoughby added: “Just so good. ]The crowd] are all on their feet behind us and quite rightly so. What an amazing moment that was”!

The Sun reports that a source has claimed that the routine, choreographed by Jayne and Christopher, was filmed in advance for time reasons. A source told the outlet: “No one in the audience had a clue they were about see such a historic moment”. They added: “It was really emotional to watch and there were plenty of tears in the studio”.

Fans shared their thoughts over the performance on X, with some suggesting that it left them emotional. One person wrote: “Not me getting emotional watching Torvill and Dean’s last ever skate…” Another viewer wrote in a post beside a crying emoji: “Awww Torvill and Dean, end of an era”.

A third fan commented: “How emotional was that last ever dance from Torvill and Dean”. Alongside a teary-eyed emoji, another viewer said: “Torvill &amp, Dean’s final performance was STUNNING”. Sharing their thoughts, someone wrote: “Torvill &amp, Dean’s last ever tv performance! I’m so emotional”.

“It’s the end of an era for Torvill and Dean. I’m not crying you are”, read another post over the routine. Whilst one fan said on the platform tonight: “Torvill and Dean, a very special duo. It’s been an honour to watch you skate together”.

The pair are yet to embark on their final tour, Torvill &amp, Dean: Our Last Dance, which will run from April to July. Speaking to the Mirror prior to DOI’s return, Christopher said: “We’re doing our last tour this year as well so once we’ve finished our last skate on tour, we won’t be performing again”.

Following their routine on DOI, it was announced that Coronation Street star Sam Aston and his skating partner Molly Lanaghan had won the latest series. The actor competed in the final against Michaela Strachan and Anton Ferdinand, who ended up placing second and third respectively.

India were crowned 2025 Champions Trophy winners on Sunday in Dubai after making hard work of a four-wicket win over New Zealand.

The win cemented India’s place as the leading white-ball side in the world, coming after their victory in the T20 World Cup last June, and eases the pain of the defeat by Australia in Ahmedabad at their own 50-over World Cup 16 months ago.

It has seemed like India’s from the start with visits to their matches feeling more like an exhibition while the rest of the action took place in Pakistan.

Teams were flown in to face 11 superstars in immaculate electric blue in front of thousands wearing those players ‘ names on their backs.

Would Hardik Pandya have been introduced in Lahore with deafening cries of “Kung-fu Pand-ya”!, as he was in Dubai?

Sadly, we will never know.

It should be made clear, there are no easy answers here.

India announced they would not travel to Pakistan in December because of long-standing political tensions between the two nations. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has been in a tricky spot ever since.

Play the tournament without India? Indian markets make up a significant portion of the ICC’s income, reported to be as much as 80%.

Take away the opportunity for Pakistan to host a first tournament for 29 years at the last minute? Not feasible either.

The result was India playing the tournament in one city, remaining in one hotel, as the row over the advantages they held rumbled on throughout.

New Zealand covered more than 7, 000km travelling to matches, while the nearest an India player got to a plane was Kuldeep Yadav’s wide-armed celebration after claiming the crucial wicket of Rachin Ravindra in the final.

At every turn, India denied the obvious, until Mohammed Shami said the situation had “definitely” helped them after their semi-final. Moments earlier, in the same room, coach Gautam Gambhir suggested anyone that said so needed to “grow up”.

Opposition players remained largely quiet, until South Africa’s David Miller said he would be supporting New Zealand in the final.

Speak to players in private and the power India seemingly hold is simply met with a shrug. This is the path cricket is on.

In 2023, there was the controversy of the semi-final pitch switched at the last minute in a move that appeared to suit India’s spinners.

Eight months ago, India beat England in the T20 semi-final in Guyana, when again Rohit Sharma was the only captain to know where his side’s matches would be played before departure.

That fixture was played at 10: 30am to suit Indian TV, limiting the local crowd. This time India’s last group match was played on a Sunday – when TV viewership in India is highest – and caused the farcical situation of South Africa having to fly to Dubai but return to Pakistan less than 24 hours later.

Of course, none of this is the fault of India’s players.

Rohit, who caused a stir by sending vice-captain Shubman Gill to the pre-final captains ‘ interview this week, and Virat Kohli are two 50-over greats.

Ravindra Jadeja, who hit the winning runs against New Zealand, is not far behind, while Gill will probably get there too if given the chance.

India’s strength is such that they might well have won this tournament wherever it was played. The fact they have not had injured star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah for the Champions Trophy has largely been forgotten.

But these ICC men’s events – increased in number to include either a Champions Trophy, T20 or 50-over World Cup every year until 2031 – are supposed to be the internationals game’s counter to the money-spinning Indian Premier League.

Instead, they now come so often, follow such a familiar pattern, that indifference is perhaps beginning to set in.

There were no written journalists from India’s fellow semi-finalists, Australia, South Africa or New Zealand, at the Champions Trophy – hardly the sign of a healthy sport.

The fallout from England’s dismal exit was loud among the diehards but outside of that?

You be the judge about whether this tournament came up in the family WhatsApp group.

Their chaotic organisation does not help either, with the schedule for this competition confirmed just 57 days before it began.

No English media were able to witness that Guyana semi-final because of the quick turnaround, a lack of flights and the fact it took place in a country US authorities advise against visiting on safety grounds.

In cricket, these things are simply waved through.

Things will not get easier in the next two tournaments – the women’s World Cup later this year and the men’s T20 version in the spring of 2026.

Both will be held in India, in partnership with Sri Lanka in the case of the T20, meaning should Pakistan qualify they will get the treatment their rivals had here.

Pakistan could find themselves with the same advantages India had but uncertainties – two venues needed to be lined up for a final – are not going anywhere.

It is not that hope is lost.

This tournament has shown, yet again, that the product of international white-ball cricket on the field remains strong, despite two washouts and too many one-sided games.

Australia batter Josh Inglis ‘ century against England was an all-timer, Ravindra continued to emerge as one of the next stars of the sport and Afghanistan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai should be the want of every Hundred team in Wednesday’s draft.
