‘Always goes to the wire’ – Leeds boss Farke calls for calm

Rex Features

Leeds United boss Daniel Farke called for calm after his Championship leaders dropped points for the second weekend in succession.

The Whites ‘ promotion hopes suffered a setback on Sunday as they were beaten 1-0 at Portsmouth just eight days after being held at home by West Bromwich Albion.

They remain top but are now level on points with second-placed Sheffield United – with third-placed Burnley just two points back.

Leeds missed out on promotion to the Premier League in a three-horse title race with Leicester and Ipswich last season after fading during the run-in.

But Farke insisted he will not overreact to taking just one point from the past six available and said his side must continue to “prove themselves” in their remaining matches.

“If you want to finish in the top positions in this league you have to show consistency – the title is not won in February or March, it always goes to the wire”, Farke told BBC Radio Leeds.

“You have to prove yourselves every single game, we have some difficult matches coming up and we don’t take anything for granted.

” I know we can be better and much more effective.

“It’s a long road and it’s tough – overall this season we have been impressive, we just have to make sure we are a bit more effective in our upcoming games”.

At Fratton Park, Leeds had a number of chances to score but it ended up being a frustrating day.

They struck the woodwork, missed some big chances and were denied on several occasions by impressive Portsmouth keeper Nicolas Schmid.

They also had a big shout for a penalty waved away as Dan James appeared to be kicked in the box in the first half.

According to Opta, Portsmouth recorded an XG (expected goals) of 0.66 and Leeds 2.27.

“In terms of expected goals we were by far the better side”, Farke told Sky Sports after the game.

“We had one-on-ones with the keeper, missed chances, hit the bar – you have to take your chances.

” Sometimes you have a day when everything comes together, on others not. We have to accept it. It was not our day. We had enough chances to win the game. “

Liam Gallagher hits out at child support claims amid new legal battle with Liza Ghorbani

Liam Gallagher has hit out at child support claims amid his fresh legal battle with the mother of his youngest child.

The Oasis frontman is reportedly embroiled in a bitter court battle with ex Liza Ghorbani, the mother of his 12-year-old daughter Gemma, after she recently launched a new claim for increased child support in a New York court. According to sources, the 51-year-old, who had a brief affair with the Manchester-born rocker when she interviewed him in 2010, has demanded more child support money ahead of Liam’s big Oasis reunion tour.

The gigs have reportedly landed Liam and brother Noel Gallagher, 57, a whopping £50 million. Sources claim that Liza is “taking advantage” of Liam’s fortune. They went on to add that he’s “already generous” and has continued to meet his child support obligations.

After news of the fresh legal battle emerged, Liam took to social media to hit out at his ex, and revealed the staggering amount of child support he was already paying to Liza. “GOLD DIGGER”, he posted on X/Twitter. “And it’s 300 grand a year not 36 grand a year get your SUMS right LG x”.

The case, filed in the New York Supreme Court under “Liza Ghorbani vs. Liam Gallagher – child support”, marks the first legal move since a confidential settlement was reached in 2015. At that time, reports suggested Ghorbani was receiving around £3, 000 per month. Reflecting on the resolution, she previously stated: “I’m just really relieved this ordeal is over for the sake of my daughter”.

A source close to the singer told The Sun on Sunday that Liza is “taking advantage” of the rocker’s recent fortunes. “He has always met his child support obligations, and they’re already generous”, they said. “This claim is asking for an excessive amount of money, and it’s definitely added some stress before the tour”.

The duo reportedly reached a confidential settlement in 2015, and at the time, it was suggested Liza was receiving around £3, 000 per month from Liam. The new case has been called “silly” by insiders close to the singer.

The duo first met in 2010, and after a brief romance, Liza gave birth to their daughter Gemma. However, Liam was forced to admit to being Gemma’s father in 2013 after Liza filed a £2 million lawsuit over allegations he had failed to pay child support or attend hearings related to financially supporting their daughter. The lawsuit led to the breakdown of his marriage to then-wife Nicole Appleton, and he used his divorce as the reason why he was unable to pay child support at the time.

The rocker has four children with four different women, and fathered his first child, daughter Molly, 26, following an affair with singer Lisa Moorish just two months after he married actress Patsy Kensit. He also shares son Lennon, 25, with former EastEnders star Patsy, and son Gene, 23, with All Saints singer Nicole.

Chelsea Go Fourth As Spurs Salvage Bournemouth Draw

Chelsea boosted their bid to qualify for the Champions League as Marc Cucurella’s rocket sealed a 1-0 win over Leicester, while Tottenham fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Bournemouth on Sunday.

Cucurella struck in the second half at Stamford Bridge to lift Chelsea above Manchester City into fourth in the Premier League.

The Blues are two points ahead of City in the race for the top four finish that guarantees a Champions League berth.

It was only Chelsea’s fourth victory in their last 12 league games as they responded to boss Enzo Maresca’s challenge to win all their remaining home matches.

Maresca believes that should be enough to ensure Champions League action, but Chelsea will have to improve on a spluttering performance against second-bottom Leicester.

Cole Palmer missed a penalty for Chelsea and was later substituted, making it seven league games without a goal or assist amid criticism of the England forward’s frustrated body language.

Maresca left Leicester at the end of last season after leading them to promotion and the Foxes look destined to return to the Championship without him.

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side have lost five successive league games and sit six points from safety.

Chelsea legends Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Dennis Wise, Kerry Dixon and Ron Harris were on the pitch before kick-off to celebrate the club’s 120th anniversary.

This was far from a highlight moment in Chelsea’s illustrious history however.

Victor Kristiansen’s clumsy challenge pole-axed Jadon Sancho, earning Chelsea a first half spot-kick.

Usually such a ruthless penalty taker, Palmer seized the ball as he looked to end his drought, only for Mads Hermansen to deny him with a superb save.

It was the first penalty miss of Palmer’s career and Leicester almost made him pay immediately.

Error-prone Chelsea keeper Robert Sanchez completely missed James Justin’s cross and Tosin Adarabioyo’s miscued headed clearance thudded off the woodwork.

Chelsea finally took the lead in spectacular fashion on the hour when Spanish defender Cucurella drilled into the bottom corner from 25 yards.

&nbsp, Spurs escape

At the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Bournemouth missed a chance to climb into the top four race as the hosts saved boss Ange Postecoglou from another embarrassing defeat.

Tottenham lost 1-0 at AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League last 16 first leg on Thursday.

That competition represents Tottenham’s last chance of fulfilling Postecoglou’s boast that he always win a trophy in his second season.

Languishing in 13th in the Premier League, Postecoglou’s side have gone three games without a win in all competitions.

Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke shook off a back injury for his first league appearance since January, while Cristian Romero returned to the Tottenham defence for the first time since December after a thigh injury.

Despite those reinforcements, Tottenham conceded in the 42nd minute, when Marcus Tavernier applied the finishing touch to Milos Kerkez’s pin-point cross after Pedro Porro carelessly conceded possession.

Postecoglou sent on Son Heung-min at half-time in a bid to spark Tottenham and the South Korean was inches away from equalising as his deflected strike whistled wide.

Bournemouth struck again in the 65th minute as Evanilson raced onto Justin Kluivert’s pass and lifted a composed finish over Guglielmo Vicario.

But Pape Sarr reduced the deficit two minutes later, the Tottenham midfielder catching out Bournemouth keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga with a misjudged cross that somehow dipped in at the far post.

Tottenham completed their escape in the 84th minute as Kepa conceded a penalty with a desperate lunge on Son.

Son calmly slotted home from the spot for his first goal in 10 games, taking him to 11 in all competitions this season.

Later on Sunday, second-placed Arsenal face Manchester United at Old Trafford looking to close the gap on runaway leaders Liverpool to 13 points.

Holders Manchester United will head to Manchester City in the semi-finals of the Women’s FA Cup, while Chelsea will host Liverpool.

The Manchester rivals also met in the League Cup quarter-final in January, with City winning 2-1 on their way to booking a place in next Saturday’s final against Chelsea.

Liverpool are in their first FA Cup semi-final since the 2016-17 season.

Both ties are scheduled to take place on Sunday, 13 April and will be broadcast live across the BBC.

The final, which takes place on Sunday, 18 May, will also be shown live on the BBC.

Last year’s winners United clinched their place in the last four for a third season in a row with a 3-1 win over Championship side Sunderland on Saturday.
