Man City Boost Top Five Bid, Southampton Snatch Late Leveller

Manchester City bolstered their bid to qualify for the Champions League with a dramatic 2-0 win at Everton, while Southampton’s last-gasp equaliser at West Ham ensured they will not have sole possession of the lowest points total in Premier League history.

City were heading towards a damaging draw before Nico O’Reilly’s 84th minute strike put them on course for a vital victory that was sealed by Mateo Kovacic’s goal in the final seconds.

Pep Guardiola’s side climb to fourth place, four points ahead of sixth-placed Chelsea, who face Fulham on Sunday in their game in hand.

Fifth-placed Nottingham Forest, who travel to Tottenham on Monday, are one point adrift of City.

At a stage of the season when they are usually embroiled in a battle to win the title, City — champions in six of the previous seven campaigns — have been reduced to scrapping for a Champions League berth after a dismal season.

In the 84th minute, Matheus Nunes’s low cross into the six-yard box was met by the 20-year-old O’Reilly, who got in front of Michael Keane to poke home from close range.

O’Reilly has emerged as an unlikely hero for City after the Manchester-born midfielder scored last week in the win against Crystal Palace and netted twice against Plymouth in the FA Cup.

Kovacic wrapped up City’s victory on their last visit to Goodison Park before Everton move to a new stadium next season.

The Croatian guided Ilkay Gundogan’s pass into the bottom corner to give City a third win from their last four league games.

“To win here at Goodison Park, where Liverpool and Arsenal couldn’t, is massively important,” Guardiola said.

“Now it is in our hands. Three games at home, two away and hopefully we can achieve this big success to qualify for the Champions League. ”

Relegated Southampton rescued a 1-1 draw at West Ham to guarantee they won’t have the indignity of being the lone club with the Premier League’s worst ever points tally.

Jarrod Bowen struck for the Hammers in the 47th minute, holding off Ryan Manning before lashing a fierce finish past Aaron Ramsdale.

But Lesley Ugochukwu equalised three minutes into second half stoppage-time as he lashed past Alphonse Areola.

Bottom of the table Southampton are now on 11 points — the same number Derby managed in 2007-08 — and have five games left to leave the Rams with the lowest total ever recorded in the Premier League.

Brentford beat 10-man Brighton 4-2 to damage the Seagulls’ prospects of qualifying for Europe with their first home win since December.

Thomas Frank’s side took a ninth minute lead when Lewis Keane-Potter’s precise pass through the heart of the Brighton defence picked out Bryan Mbeumo and he confidently slotted home

Danny Welbeck hauled Brighton level in first half stoppage-time with a powerful header from Mats Wieffer’s cross.

Mbeumo restored Brentford’s advantage three minutes after half-time, his strike taking a hefty deflection off Brighton defender Lewis Dunk on its way past Bart Verbruggen.

Yoane Wissa bagged Brentford’s third in the 58th minute, running onto Mbeumo’s pass and finishing with the help of a deflection off Jan Paul van Hecke.

Brighton striker Joao Pedro was sent off in the 61st minute for a needless kick at Nathan Collins.

Japan forward Kaoru Mitoma reduced the deficit in the 81st minute, but Christian Norgaard headed home in stoppage-time to end Brighton’s hopes of a late escape.

Crystal Palace held on for a 0-0 draw against Bournemouth despite playing half the match with 10 men.

Palace were reduced to 10 men just before half-time at Selhurst Park when Chris Richards was sent off for a second booking after the defender fouled Justin Kluivert.

Third-placed Newcastle will look to step up their Champions League qualification surge when they travel to Aston Villa in Saturday’s late game.

Freddie Flintoff has always been known for his television appearances – on the pitch and off. But even for the former England cricket captain and national treasure, the last couple of years have been nothing short of life-changing.

After a terrifying crash while filming Top Gear in 2022, Freddie, now 47, vanished from the public eye. The high-speed accident left him with serious facial injuries and what insiders have described as long-lasting mental scars.

He was airlifted to hospital and took time away from cameras, sparking widespread concern and sympathy from fans and fellow stars. Now, the much-loved all-rounder is finally ready to talk.

Freddie is set to open up in a deeply personal Disney+ documentary, titled simply Flintoff, airing April 25. The 90-minute special promises a rare, raw glimpse into the emotional toll of his recovery – and the sport that continues to shape his life.

Freddie will be seen discussing the aftermath of the incident on the Jonathan Ross Show this weekend. The former England cricket captain is a guest on Saturday’s episode of the ITV show alongside Jason Isaacs, Rebel Wilson, David Oyelowo, Sophie Willan and Wet Leg.

“Cricket’s always been a massive part of my life, shaping who I am,” Freddie said on the show. “Looking back on the highs and the lows, including the challenges I’ve faced since my accident, has been a real reminder of why my career in the sport has meant so much. ”

In a trailer for his new documentary, the first pictures from the scene of the crash have been released. Taken on the Top Gear track, snaps show paramedics attending Freddie’s crumbled body next to the car, which skidded completely off the tarmac and onto the grass. A car kitted out with camera equipment had pulled up behind it.

In another shot, medics are seen attending to the injured sportsman at the side of the road with tyre skids showing how the three-wheeled open-topped car he was driving had veered catastrophically off track.

He was in the car alongside a crew member and suffered severe facial injuries, which have left him permanently scarred, as well as several broken ribs. Filming was called off “for the foreseeable future” in light of the incident, and Freddie agreed a £9million financial settlement with the BBC.

The documentary will also touch on Freddie’s battle with PTSD, which sources close to him say has been as intense as his physical recovery. For months, he stayed away from public appearances, gradually healing in private and spending time with his family.

When he did finally re-emerge in 2023, fans were moved by the sight of him with visible scarring on his face. This year, Freddie made his long-awaited return to TV in Freddie Flintoff’s Field of Dreams on Tour, a heartwarming follow-up to his original BBC series.

The show follows his cricket team of underprivileged lads from Preston as they travel to India, experiencing the game in a country where it’s more religion than sport.

Hutton and O’Neill help Notts dominate Warwickshire

Rothesay County Championship Division One, Edgbaston (day two)

class=”ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3″>Warwickshire 93: O’Neill 5-19, Hutton 5-38

Nottinghamshire 204-5: Hameed 75*

Nottinghamshire (3 pts) lead Warwickshire (1 pt) by 111 runs with five wickets remaining.

Top-drawer seam bowling by Fergus O’Neill and Brett Hutton put Nottinghamshire in command against Warwickshire on the second day of their County Championship at Edgbaston.

Aussie import O’Neill took 5-19 and Hutton 5-38 as the home side floundered to 93 all out.

Only Sam Hain (43) offered sustained resistance as the visitors rapaciously made up for time lost on the first day when just 56 balls were bowled.

Nottinghamshire than advanced to 204-5 by the close of the second day with captain Haseeb Hameed carrying his team’s reply with an adamantine unbeaten 75.

When they passed Warwickshire’s total for the loss of just one wicket, a mighty lead beckoned and, though the home bowlers struck back with four wickets in the last session, Hameed’s side remains very strongly placed.

Nottinghamshire’s cricket in a first session trimmed at both ends by rain was exemplary. Warwickshire resumed on 34-2 then scored 58 for five in 24. 2 overs before lunch against an attack that applied relentless pressure.

Overnight pair Hamza Shaikh and Hain took the score to 60 but five wickets then fell for 31 runs in 13. 5 overs.

Shaikh left a gap between bat and pad and Hutton found it to bowl him. Dan Mousley did the same and O’Neill powered an in-ducker on to off-stump. When Ed Barnard drove hard at the Aussie, Freddie McCann held a screamer at second slip.

Hain, a habitual plunderer of Nottinghamshire with an average of 59. 7 against them across the formats, batted with as much assurance as possible in tough conditions but then copped a ferocious in-ducker from O’Neill and fell lbw.

After another rapid delivery ripped out Michael Booth’s off-stump, O’Neill lunched on 12. 4-4-19-4.

From 92-7 at lunch, Warwickshire swiftly declined to 93 all out as both bowlers completed five-fors.

Lady Luck then shone on Nottinghamshire as their reply began in the game’s first two hours of sunshine.

Hameed and Ben Slater (40) took advantage to raise 50 in 67 balls and 81 in 87 before Slater was lbw to Bamber on the stroke of tea.

In the last session, the Bears’ bowlers, without building the same pressure as their Notts counterparts, struck sporadically.

McCann nicked Fernando behind, Joe Clarke edged Booth to third slip and Josh Haynes fell lbw to Olly Hannon-Dalby, providing the Yorkshireman’s 332nd wickets in his 100th first class match for county.

Kyle Verreynne contributed a punchy 29 before top-edging a pull at Booth to deep square-leg but Hameed’s concentration was total and his true captain’s innings kept his side emphatically on top.

Verstappen claims Saudi GP pole after Norris crash

Saudi Arabian Grand Prix

Venue: Jeddah Date: 20 April Race start: 18:00 BST

Championship leader Lando Norris crashed out of qualifying at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix and will start 10th as Max Verstappen beat the Briton’s McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri to pole position.

Verstappen in his Red Bull pipped Piastri by 0. 01 seconds to take his second pole position of the year in scintillating style.

Mercedes’ George Russell was third, split from team-mate Andrea Kimi Antonelli by Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.

Norris’ crash interrupted the first runs of all his rivals in Q3 apart from Piastri, who laid down a marker just before his team-mate lost control over the kerb at Turn Five and slid sideways into the wall.

When the session resumed, Verstappen went out on his semi-used tyres and took over top spot in his Red Bull from Piastri by just 0. 001secs.

The four-time world champion came straight back in to switch to fresh tyres and, while he warmed up, first Russell – and then Piastri – took top spot.

But Verstappen signalled his intent with a blistering first sector, 0. 123secs quicker than Piastri. Although the Australian was quicker in both the second and third sectors, the Dutchman had done enough to grab pole.

Verstappen said: “I definitely didn’t expect to be on pole here but the car came alive in the night and it was a lot more enjoyable to drive. The grip was coming to me. Around here a qualifying lap is extremely difficult. It is really satisfying.

“Tomorrow in the race it will be tough to keep them behind but we are going to give it a good go. “

Piastri said: “Max has done a good job, another high-speed circuit for them, where they seem to have a little more success. Our pace is good. It’s going to be a tough race, the tyres are softer than last year and we’ll see if that plays to our advantage. “

Norris will have to rely on the strong race pace of the McLaren to try to limit the damage to his championship position, as he starts the race three points clear of Piastri and eight in front of Verstappen.

His accident was caused by him misjudging the entry to the chicane at Turns Four and Five. The car oversteered on to the kerb at Five and was flicked into the wall on the exit, damaging the left-hand side of the car.

He swore over the radio that he was an “idiot”, but was unhurt.

Saracens back into top four with Gloucester win

Saracens (12) 36

Tries: Segun, Tompkins, Dan 2, Gonzalez, George Cons: Burke 3

Gloucester (14) 14

Saracens produced a powerful second-half performance to beat Gloucester and climb into the Premiership’s top four.

Trailing by two points at the interval, the hosts scored 24 unanswered points to take the game beyond their opponents with two tries from Theo Dan, an individual score from Juan Martin Gonzalez and one from Jamie George.

In the first half, Rotimi Segun and Nick Tomkins had crossed for Saracens, but scores from Chris Harris and Santi Carreras had edged the visitors in front.

But the champions of two years ago were unstoppable after the break as they moved level on points with third-placed Sale with this bonus-point success.

In search of their first top-four finish for six years, George Skivington’s Cherry and Whites have been the great entertainers this season and that was evident with their first try.

From inside their own half, they put together a flowing move which ended with Jacob Morris’ directing a grubber-kick perfectly into the path of Harris to score.

But it needed little time for them to respond thanks to the dancing feet of Segun as he grabbed a loose ball and sidestepped his way to the line.

And when Tompkins burst onto Fergus Burke’s short pass in midfield, the Wales centre showed nice footwork and balance to go over.

Sarries show domestic intent

Saracens director of rugby Mark McCall made no secret of his decision to prioritise making the top four over success in Europe and his England contingent were all back for this one.

That showed in the second period as their forwards – with Maro Itoje, Ben Earl and Tom Willis all in from the start having missed the Champions Cup exit to Toulon – made a massive difference.

Dan’s try from a driving maul put Sarries back in front and a carbon copy move shortly after ended with the same result and a second try for the hooker.

Gloucester had little answer as Argentina flanker Gonzalez and then George put the gloss on the scoreline, with the former England captain, finishing like a winger after great work from his Red Rose successor, Itoje, in stealing a lineout.

It is the first time since January that Saracens have been in the play-off spots but suggested they are coming into form at the right time.

Gloucester head coach George Skivington told BBC Radio Gloucestershire:

“There was a lot of good stuff in the first half but we missed a couple of opportunities, which was a shame.

“Second half, there were a few key lineouts that hurt us. We’ve got to have a little look at a few areas where we weren’t clinical enough and lineout is definitely top of the list.

Saracens: Daly; Elliott, Tompkins, Hartley, Segun; Burke, van Zyl; Mawi, Dan, Riccioni, Itoje, Isiekwe, McFarland, Earl, Willis.

Replacements: George, Carre, Clarey, Tizard, Christie, Gonzalez, Bracken, Goode.

Gloucester: Carreras; Barton, Harris, S Atkinson, Morris, Anscombe, T Williams; Rapava-Ruskin, Singleton, Fasagbon, Clark, F Thomas, Clement, Ludlow, Ackermann.

Replacements: Blake, Ford-Robinson, Gotovtsev, Jordan, Clarke, Englefield, C Atkinson, Cotgreave.

Anti-Trump administration protesters turn out for rallies in the US

Opponents of President Donald Trump’s administration have taken to the streets in droves across the United States to decry what they say are threats to the nation’s democratic ideals, including deportations of immigrants and mass firings of government workers.

The protests on Saturday ranged from rallies in midtown Manhattan and in front of the White House in Washington, DC, to a demonstration at a Massachusetts commemoration marking the start of the American Revolutionary War 250 years ago.

The protests come just two weeks after similar nationwide protests against the Trump administration drew thousands of participants.

Organisers said they’re protesting against what they view as Trump’s violations of civil rights and the US Constitution, including efforts to deport hundreds of immigrants and scale back the federal government by firing thousands of government workers and in effect shutter entire agencies.

In Manhattan, protesters rallied against continued deportations of immigrants from the steps of the New York Public Library.

“No fear, no hate, no ICE in our state,” they chanted, referring to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Thomas Bassford drove from Maine to Massachusetts to witness the reenactment of the Battles of Lexington and Concord and “the shot heard ’round the world” on April 19, 1775, that heralded the start of the US war of independence from Britain.

The 80-year-old retiree said he believed Americans today are under attack from their own government and need to stand up against it. “This is a very perilous time in America for liberty,” he told The Associated Press news agency, adding: “I wanted the boys [his grandsons] to learn about the origins of this country and that sometimes we have to fight for freedom. ”

Elsewhere, protests were planned outside Tesla car dealerships against billionaire Trump adviser Elon Musk and his role in downsizing the federal government while still others organised community-service events, such as food drives, teach-ins and volunteering at local shelters.

Some of the events drew on the spirit of the American Revolutionary War, calling for “no kings” and resistance to tyranny.

Boston resident George Bryant was among those who turned out in Concord. He told The Associated Press he was concerned Trump was creating a “police state” in America as he held up a sign saying, “Trump fascist regime must go now! ”

The Trump administration, among other things, has moved to shut down Social Security Administration field offices, cut funding for government health programmes and scale back protections for transgender people.

In Washington, DC, Bob Fasick said he came out to the rally outside the White House out of concern about threats to constitutionally protected due process rights as well as Social Security and other federal safety-net programmes.
