After suffering a painful Champions League defeat against Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid has little time to reflect on.

On Sunday, in a tight fight for the Spanish league title, Barcelona will have a crucial game to play.

One of the biggest matches on the Spanish football calendar is up for grabs for Al Jazeera:

How do Barcelona and Atletico Madrid fare in LaLiga?

In the three-way trophy battle, Atletico are one point ahead of Barcelona in second and four points ahead of leaders Madrid.

Real has won one more games than Barca and one more than Atletico.

So Diego Simeone’s team can’t afford to lose on Sunday, but they must overcome Wednesday’s agonizing defeat to their fierce crosstown rival on Wednesday.

Julian Alvarez scores a penalty in a penalty shootout at Atletico Madrid, but the penalty was later disallowed following a VAR review for the Champions League match between Real Madrid and Real Madrid on March 12, 2025.

What transpired in the Champions League match between Atletico and Real Madrid?

After Julian Alvarez’s spot kick was denied for a double touch, Atletico lost in a penalty shootout against Real. Alvarez’s support foot slid and gently nudged the ball before hitting it with his other foot and sending it into the net, which was the only video review to notice.

“Honestly, it’s difficult to move past the tie’s loss. After the game, Simeone said, “We can’t lie to ourselves.”

Where might Sunday’s game be won?

After winning against Benfica on Tuesday, Simeone acknowledged that Barcelona could benefit both physically and emotionally as a result of Hansi Flick’s side receiving an extra day of rest.

On Sunday, we face a formidable adversary. I believe the Barcelona players were hoping that we could play until penalties were reached, Simeone said. We will arrive at Barcelona “we will come tired and beat up after having fought hard in a tie that demanded we give it our all,” according to the statement.

How has recently the rivalry developed?

This year, Atletico have confounded Barcelona twice. In the first leg of their Copa del Rey semifinal, Alexander Sorloth scored a 2-1 victory over Barcelona in the league and a 4-4 draw.

Barcelona haven’t lost a single game against Atletico since late December, going 17 straight against them in all competitions.

Next month, Atletico will host Barcelona in the Copa del Rey semifinal.

What does Barcelona think of the game?

Flick cautioned his Barcelona teammates to concentrate on staying focused so they don’t fall apart as they have in their previous two matches this year.

We’ve had really two fantastic matches, and we must remain focused until the very end, Flick said to reporters on Saturday.

We had the same focus in the first match and the end of the match, and we had to be careful about that because the second match was [the same] at the beginning and end.

“We have to defend ourselves from Atletico’s potential harm when you make mistakes,” he said.

How is the Olmo-Gavi headache resolved by Flick?

Dani Olmo appears to be in the ascendancy of Gavi in Barca’s attacking midfield position.

The Spain squad for the Nations League quarterfinals against the Netherlands next week did not include Gavi and Barca defender Alejandro Balde, but the coach of Barca thanked both players.

“Gavi] is 20 years old, and he’s, I think, not the first choice]… a more difficult situation, but he’s doing great,” said Flick.

Our midfield is currently doing very well. He will play many, many years for this amazing club and be one of the stars, and I’m happy he’s here.

He has great potential. He’ll follow this instruction. His attitude is unfathomably positive. He is extremely focused and content that he is here.

He will be there and play, 100%, I believe, for the World Cup in 2026.

Flick praised veteran centre back Inigo Martinez, who was given the call-up for Spain by national team coach Luis de la Fuente, and called Balde “one of the best” left backs in the world.

He is “unbelievably good for every team” with his attitude and mentality, according to Flick.

With a stunning 26-22 victory over defending champion Wigan Warriors, Hull FC shockened the Challenge Cup fourth round.

The visitors won in a surprisingly surprising manner against the 21-time winners thanks to a hat-trick from winger Lewis Martin and tries from Herman Ese’ese and Amir Bourouh.

Following tries from Zach Eckersley, Jai Field, and Junior Nsemba, as well as two successful goal kicks from Harry Smith, the Cherry and Whites quickly jumped to a 16-point lead in the first half.

“The boys stuck in there and what a win, it was unreal,” Martin said, according to Martin, who was probably watching half-time.

“We’ll accept any winner,” the leader said. We believe in the group’s ability to defeat anyone. Who we choose is really irrelevant.

Martin, a Hat-Trick hero, steals the show.

In the opening 20 minutes of their match against Hull, Wigan won three tries and engaged in some of their most spectacular rugby of the season.

However, Martin broke clear for the first time in the opening half before Ese’ese was teed over next to the sticks.

Liam Farrell fought back just before the break to earn the hosts a fourth and retake the lead of 16 points.

However, Harvey Barron’s interception made it impossible for the visitors to convert the ball, and Bourouh eventually crashed over from close range after seven minutes of the second-half.

12-man Hull fought back when John Asiata was sent to the sin-bin for dissent after he was sent to the sin-bin for dissent. Martin, who had a dominant start, powered inside from the left to force his first tackle of the night.

Aidan Sezer’s deft kick over the top found the oncoming Martin, who blazed past Bevan French and scored his second in the corner with a quick turn of pace.

Widnes Vikings made it a nervy night for Warrington’s neighbors by scoring a try after five minutes.

After Adam Holroyd had gathered in George Williams’ offload and Josh Thewlis had made a mistake in the corner, Wire had led 10-6 at the break.

In a yo-yo battle, the hosts regained control with two tries, first by Matt Fleming and then by Jack Owens, who scored six points first.

Despite a brave performance, the Championship side was unable to hold on, and Max Wood capitalized on another Vikings error to bring the score level at 16-16.

Featherstone Rovers, a Sam Tomkins-inspired Catalan Dragons team, easily swept aside in the championship game on an evening with much more comfort.

In the French side’s nine-try romp, the 35-year-old scored two tries and kicked five goals in his first appearance of the season since recovering from a hamstring injury.

The Dragons advanced to the last eight with two tries each from Australian winger Nick Cotric, Luke Keary, Chris Satae, Fouad Yaha, Reimis Smith, and Paul Seguier, Luke Keary, Chris Satae, Fouad Yaha, Fouad Yaha.

Haaland reaches 100 goal involvements in record time

Erling Haaland’s goalscoring may have slowed down as he reaches more human levels, but Manchester City’s 2-2 draw with Brighton on Saturday set a new record.

In his 94th game, his penalty resulted in 100 Premier League goal contributions (goals and assists total).

Only two players in their third Premier League season, Haaland and Shearer, who left Borussia Dortmund for £51.2 million in June 2022, managed to make that figure.

Shearer’s participation in the former First Division did not contribute to this record.

In their fourth seasons, Les Ferdinand, Thierry Henry, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Les Ferdinand, and Matt le Tissier all succeeded in doing it.

relying on the objectives

84 goals and 16 assists made up Haaland’s first 100 Premier League goalscoring appearances.

Before reaching the milestone, Kane only had 13 assists, just like the former Tottenham striker.

However, some of the objectives are drier.

Following his departure from Borussia Dortmund, Haaland won the Premier League Golden Boot in his first two seasons at Manchester City.

But he only has seven goals in 27 games this season, compared to three goals from Haaland and seven from Salah at Liverpool.

The best start to an English top-flight season since 1930’s Aston Villa’s Pongo Waring, where he scored 10 goals in the first five games.

What adversaries have they encountered?

Manchester United, which has six goals and three assists in five games, is Haaland’s best Premier League success rate.

He has scored nine goals and had no assists in his six games against West Ham.

What forthcoming releases are there?

100 Premier League goals will be the next milestone for Haaland to reach.

Shearer’s 124th appearance ranks him as the man who has scored 100 goals all for Blackburn.
