Syria-SDF ceasefire hangs in balance after renewed clashes, faltering talks

Days after the Syrian government announced a ceasefire, which is being put to the test by renewed fighting, including the removal of the latter’s forces from areas west of the Euphrates River, tensions have been escalating.

Abdi has returned to the northeast after talks between SDF leader Mazloum Abdi and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Damascus failed.

The issues involving ISIL (ISIS) prisoners who escaped from al-Shaddadi prison during the conflict between the army and the SDF have been a source of contention and detention. On Tuesday, the Syrian government announced that 130 of the 200 ISIL escapees had been recaptured.

The SDF was charged by the ministry with using “political and security blackmail” to force ISIL fighters to flee from the al-Shaddadi prison. According to an agreement that the SDF would later hand control of the facility to Damascus, the army claimed it intentionally bypassed al-Shaddadi prison.

The SDF claims that the prison was “lost control” after an attack by tribal fighters with an army-affiliated army. It also claims that the army had attacked the SDF.

On Tuesday, SDF commander Fawza Yousef blasted al-Sharaa’s government for breaking the deal.

He told Al Jazeera, “The government has no political will to carry out a ceasefire.” The SDF cannot be disarmed if violations and attacks continue.

Within a month, the SDF will leave Raqqa and Deir Az Zor, which are both east of the Euphrates, according to the agreement reached on Sunday between al-Sharaa and Abdi.

As a result of internal disagreements, the SDF was accused of “trying to deflect blame” by an interior ministry spokesperson.

The spokesperson told Al Jazeera, “We favor peaceful solutions, but all options are open.”

The SDF’s withdrawal from the al-Aqtan prison was included in the agreement. Al Jazeera correspondents reported on Tuesday that the Syrian army had started artillery shelling around the prison and Raqqa’s SDF’s 17th Division headquarters as it appeared to be on the verge of collapse.

The army arrived at the Panorama intersection, which is located at the southern entrance to Hasakah, according to sources in Hasakah province in the northeast.

According to international standards, the Interior Ministry declared that it was prepared to assume control of the security and management of the ISIL prisons in Hasakah.

After assuming control of the prison there, according to information minister Hamza Mustafa, the army seized control of the Hasakah countryside’s city of al-Shaddadi.

Taking control of ISIL prisons

The SDF, the United States-backed force that fought ISIL in Syria, controls more than a dozen prisons in the northeast, where about 9, 000 ISIL members have been held for years without trial.

While al-Sharaa’s government has pledged to reunify Syria after nearly 14 years of war, the SDF has repeatedly underlined al-Sharaa’s previous affiliation with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), formerly part of al-Qaeda.

In a statement on Monday, the SDF referred to the government as “ISIS sympathizers, whose actions are directed and orchestrated by the Turkish state”, and pledged to respond in a similar manner to the battle to capture Kobane in 2014.

“Today we reaffirm that the will of the people is stronger than all forms of aggression and occupation”, the statement said.

The Syrian government responded by rejecting “any attempt to use the issue of terrorism as a tool for political or security blackmail”.

“The insistence on linking the actions of law enforcement and the restoration of state legitimacy with the danger of activating terrorist cells constitutes a blatant attempt to distort the facts and fuel the conflict in order to maintain an authority that was imposed by force of arms”, it said in a statement.

“The Syrian government warns the SDF leadership against taking any reckless steps that would facilitate the escape of ISIS detainees or open prisons for them as a retaliatory measure or as a political pressure tactic”.

Al Jazeera’s Zein Basravi, reporting from Aleppo, said the army accused the SDF of releasing the detainees while the SDF said their escape was due to their forces being overwhelmed by attacks.

A video that emerged overnight also alleged to show the execution of female Kurdish fighters. The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Council (SDC), the political wing of the SDF, released a statement saying such conduct was a “reproduction of terrorism and poses a direct threat to regional and international security”.

Basravi said both sides were reverting to familiar language and using violence to settle scores in places of Syria that had been hoping for a return to peace after the ceasefire was reached.

Al-Sharaa’s offer to Abdi

Five hours of talks on Monday between al-Sharaa and Abdi aimed at salvaging the ceasefire ended without agreement, sources told Al Jazeera.

The president offered to appoint Abdi to the post of deputy defence minister and nominate him to be governor of Hasakah in exchange for the deployment of Syrian internal security forces to its capital.

The offer also included the condition of removing members of the Kurdistan Workers ‘ Party (PKK) from the territory. Turkiye sees the SDF as a Syrian branch of the PKK, an organisation that it has been at war with since 1984 and considers a “terrorist” group.

Abdi asked for five days for consultations, a request al-Sharaa rejected. The president gave the SDF leader until the end of Tuesday to accept the offer, warning that failure to do so would trigger military action and the collapse of the ceasefire.

Al-Sharaa on Monday spoke by phone with US President Donald Trump, and the two stressed the importance of preserving Syria’s territorial unity and independence and underlined the need to guarantee the rights and protection of the Kurdish people.

Ayman Oghanna, a journalist from Damascus, reported on Al Jazeera that because of its close ties to both the SDF and Damascus, the US was in a “unique position to end this crisis.”

Washington maintains about 900 soldiers in SDF-controlled areas and trains and equips them to fight ISIL. Al-Sharaa was also added to Trump’s November White House “terrorist” list and removed from it.

Duchess Sophie’s true feelings on being dubbed Royal Family’s ‘secret weapon’ exposed

The Duchess of Edinburgh, who turns 61 today, has long been referred to as a “secret weapon” within the Royal Family, and she has finally admitted her feelings regarding the nickname.

The Duchess of Edinburgh has earned a reputation as one of the Royal Family’s safest pair of hands. And today, no doubt the likes of the King and the Prince and Princess of Wales will be wishing Sophie a ‘happy birthday’ as she turns 61 today.

Over the past two years, she has carved out an at times gritty role travelling to the likes of Iraq, Chad and even Ukraine – mainly to champion women and the role she believes they can play in delivering peace across the world. In recent years, courtiers and charity bosses have hailed Sophie as a dependable figure in the slimmed-down working monarchy – earning her the often-used description of the Royal Family’s ‘secret weapon’.

And in a previous rare interview with the Mirror, Sophie finally opened up about how she feels about the nickname – and gave an unexpected answer. Revealing her thoughts about the label, she explained: “I like to fly under the radar. It’s all very well being a secret weapon, but if no one knows, maybe it’s too secret.”

However, she continued, “I suppose I should take it as a backhanded compliment,” after a moment. I don’t see myself as being in a front-line position by itself, but admittedly, there aren’t as many working members in our family these days, so I’m starting to feel less secretive. I’m just curious what they’ll say next about me.

However, when asked what kind of description her own would be, she quickly responded, “I don’t know, I am going to leave that for others, I would suggest something that could go horribly wrong.”

Sophie acknowledged that sometimes it can “take its toll on emotions” because of her role traveling the world and confronting difficult subjects like conflict-related sexual violence head-on.

The Duchess claims that doing as much as she can, especially when it comes to issues facing women, strengthens her resolve even though the subject matters, such as rape, may not be immediately known about and the magnitude of the problems may be too great for one person, like her, to solve alone.

She continued, “It does seem to be wherever I go; it’s the women on the ground who are starting to make the difference, who are the ones starting to build peace, who are going to have to take the resolutions and turn them into actions on the ground.”

It is always emotional, which is true, but you must also look beyond the emotion to find the strength, which is always present. When husband Prince Edward received the title of Duke of Edinburgh, Sophie’s birthday comes just before her third year as Duchess of Edinburgh.

When asked about becoming Duchess of Edinburgh and how she would shape the position, she said, “First of all, it was quite large shoes to fill because not as many people alive today will remember that the Queen was Duchess of Edinburgh for the first few years when she and my father in law first married.

It felt like a lot of a big moment for me to step into her shoes [as Duchess of Edinburgh] as well. However, being practical, both my husband and I have a role in supporting the King as they did the Queen, which gives us the freedom to pursue our own interests.

High School Musical cast 20 years on – devastating break-up, very different career and marriage

The first High School Musical movie was released in 2006, 20 years after that, and it exploded onto the screen to revive musicals.

High School Musical received 7.7 million viewers on the night of its U.S. premiere on January 20, 2006, breaking the previous record for Disney Channel.

It has since become a cultural phenomenon, influencing the interests of teenagers and pre-teens all over the world as it transformed the world’s musical scene and changed the landscape. The third movie in the series, High School Musical 3: Senior Year, was the first to come out in 2008 and was immediately followed by two others.

In a time when young actors and pop stars were resurrecting the field, the cast became household names and transformed Disney Channel. Wizards of Waverley Place was suddenly a television series for teenagers, with Miley Cyrus serving as Hannah Montana and Selena Gomez as Selena Gomez.

Some of the stars’ careers completely exploded following the third movie, making them famous as heartthrobs, musicians, and household names in Hollywood. Others, in contrast, took their careers in slightly different endeavors, starting from business formation to family rearing.

There have been divorces and unions, baby births and box office booms, and it’s safe to say that these names still appear on children’s tongues in the 1990s and 2000s even 20 years later. Although we may recall who they are, we might not be certain of their current location.

Good Morning Britain’s Kate Garraway makes sad announcement after tragic death

On Tuesday, Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway shared a heartfelt update with viewers.

Good Morning Britain star Kate Garraway has made a sad announcement after a tragic death. Tuesday’s (January 20) episode of the popular ITV show was anchored by Susanna Reid and Ed Balls, who kept viewers updated on the latest happenings in the UK and around the globe.

Joining them in the studio was Laura Tobin, providing regular weather updates, while Kate took charge of the day’s other news stories.

Later in the programme, Kate relayed a heart-wrenching update about the shooting that occurred at Bondi Beach last month, which tragically claimed the lives of 15 people. Among the victims was 10-year-old Matilda, the youngest casualty of the horrific event.

“The family of the youngest victim of the Bondi Beach anti-Semitic terror attack have spoken to ITV News for the first time about the tragedy and how they battled in vain to save the life of Matilda as bullets were still being fired,” Kate revealed, reports Wales Online.

Their incredibly moving testimony comes as Australian politicians debate new laws to stop another attack from ever occurring again.

Debbie Edwards, an ITV correspondent who was reporting live from Bondi, shared her heartfelt encounters with Valentyna Poltavchenko and Michael Britvan, the parents of Matilda.

They described how devastated they were when two terrorists started shooting at a Hanukkah event on Bondi Beach in December and were unable to see their two daughters. At the time, Matilda and her sister had visited a petting zoo.

While Matilda had attempted to run back to her parents, Natasha, a brave young woman, sheltered Summer, six. Michael, her father, informed us that he saw her and realized she had been shot.

In a pre-recorded interview, Michael remarked, “She was hurt on the ground when I saw her. I crawled across the chairs back to where we were sitting.” One of those monsters appeared to be hiding somewhere out in the distance.

“I removed my shirt, remained low, covering Matilda,” and then removed it. She was still conscious. I spoke with her and said, “Calm down.” I put my shirt on her wound because she claimed it was difficult to breathe.

Debbie said, “Kate, it was heartbreaking to hear them describe what they went through that day. The youngest of 15 people to pass away that day was Matilda, who passed away in a hospital a few hours later.

The Australian Parliament has been called in to discuss new gun and hate speech laws, but Matilda’s parents think that if existing laws had been in place, this tragedy, their loss, might never occur.

Jewish leaders have previously claimed that Australia’s failure to combat growing antisemitism was an inevitable result of the tragedy. The massacre in Port Arthur last month resulted in the country’s deadliest incident since 1996, when 35 people were killed by gunmen.

In other news on today’s GMB, Kate brought to light breaking news regarding US President Donald Trump’s criticism of the UK’s Chagos Islands deal. Meanwhile, Susanna and Ed delved into the Beckham family dispute following a shocking statement shared by eldest son, Brooklyn, on social media.

How is Premier League doing in race for five Champions League places?

The competition for a spot in the Champions League is no longer as straightforward as a top-four match between Premier League clubs.

Fifth place can be promoted to the Champions League with the availability of European Performance Spots (EPS), as Newcastle discovered last year.

Contact us.

What is the process for European Performance Spots?

For the following season, two nations will each receive an EPS.

Uefa takes into account the overall performance of clubs in the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League to determine which countries are successful.

By dividing the total score by the number of clubs each league has in the European competition, it creates an average.

With nine Premier League clubs in Europe, England’s average for the EPS table is 13.486, with a coefficient score of 121.375.

Regardless of the competition, each win is worth two coefficient points, with each draw worth one.

The difference between bonus points awarded based on clubs’ top league positions and knockout rounds is significant because they are more competitive in the Champions League.

Is the Premier League in a favorable position?

Although the table will look very different in less than a week, it is currently in a pretty strong position.

The Champions League and Europa League final two games will determine a lot.

Poland leads the Conference League, but one of its four teams, which included one eliminated, all four of them, are in the top four. Poland will lose all of its points in January and fall back in the table once the league phase of that competition has finished.

It is highly unlikely that a league outside of the traditional top five will take one of the EPS spots because of the number of bonus points offered by the Champions League.

Germany leads by 1.201 points, with England currently sitting second. That’s four victories and a draw for Bundesliga clubs in actuality.

Each win is therefore less than its average score because England has nine more teams in Europe than Germany, which is seven.

England must maintain as many clubs as possible in order for other leagues to squander their best effort.

Eight English clubs have a good chance of staying in the Champions League and Europa League and earning substantial bonus points as a result. Crystal Palace have already advanced to the Conference League knockout play-off round.

The Champions League’s elimination of Bayer Leverkusen and Eintracht Frankfurt would strengthen England’s position.

With only three remaining active clubs, Cyprus isn’t a likely contender, and Pafos could lose out to the Champions League.

Germany and another nation would need to take the Premier League overtaking, and there is a significant gap, as two leagues are given the extra Champions League spots.

Italy has eight victories ahead of England. It’s nine wins and one draw for Spain.

Juventus and Napoli have struggled in the Champions League for Italy, but they should help send a line-up together.

Villarreal will almost certainly miss out on the Champions League for Spain, which has eight teams in Europe. The status of Celta Vigo’s performance in the Europa League and Athletic Club’s may also change, respectively.

However, it is not over. If English clubs were to suffer poor results in the knockout play-off round and last 16, that could open the door. Soon, results from other leagues would start to add up.

What does the Champions League competition look like in the Premier League?

In the top three spots, Arsenal (50), Manchester City (43), and Villa (43), have opened a respectable gap.

Fourth-place Liverpool (36) is currently in fourth place, while Manchester United (35) would take third place in the Champions League.

We could end up with an alternative “title race” for fifth place because Man Utd and Brighton are only five points apart in the standings.
