Riding a perfect 18 points from six matches so far, the Gunners enter this Matchday 7 contest as the UCL frontrunners, but their English Premier League (EPL) form has been far from dominant in 2026, drawing with 17th-placed Nottingham Forest in their most recent domestic fixture on Saturday.

Inter, who co-led the league phase with Arsenal after four rounds, enter this penultimate group stage contest riding a two-match UCL losing streak, including a crushing 1-0 home defeat to Liverpool in their last match on December 9, dropping the Nerazzurri to sixth in the standings.

Al Jazeera Sport takes a closer look at the high-stakes encounter, which might decide automatic qualification entry into the last 16.

Arsenal lead UCL and EPL, but it doesn’t feel like it

The Gunners lead next-best Bayern Munich in the Champions League by three points and front-run Manchester City in the Premier League by seven points, but they are playing far from their best in the new year.

Mikel Arteta’s side have sputtered out of the gate in 2026 with their last EPL victory an unconvincing 3-2 against Bournemouth on January 3, followed by two goalless draws: at home to Liverpool on January 8; and away to lowly Forest on January 17.

It is the first time since the 2012-13 season that Arsenal have recorded back-to-back 0-0 draws in the domestic league, with Arteta conceding that it was “difficult to generate momentum” during the most recent game.

“We came here to win the game, that’s clear, and we needed the opportunities that we had,” he said after the Nottingham setback.

“We haven’t managed that, so the word is disappointment.”

Arsenal remain well on course to end a 22-year wait to win the Premier League title, but they will need to quickly rediscover their offensive touch against a defensive juggernaut like Inter.

Inter hitting peak form

In contrast, Inter have recovered from a slow start to the Serie A season – where they lost two of their first three fixtures – to rapidly climb to the top of the ladder, three points clear of next-best AC Milan, and six points ahead of reigning champions Napoli.

The Nerazzurri are unbeaten in their last 11 domestic league fixtures. They were last defeated in Serie A way back on November 23, a 1-0 home loss in the derby match against Milan.

Will Arsenal qualify for the round of 16 if they beat Inter?

Yes. An Arsenal victory, or even a draw, in Tuesday’s penultimate League phase match against Inter would guarantee the North London outfit finish in the top eight clubs that automatically qualify for the last 16 of the tournament, thereby skipping the two-legged knockout playoff involving those placing ninth to 24th.

When did Inter and Liverpool last win the Champions League?

Arsenal have never won the UEFA Champions League title. They came closest in the 2005-06 season, losing the final to Barcelona 2-1.

Inter last won in 2010, overcoming Bayern Munich 2-0 in the final to complete the treble, a feat never achieved before by any team from either Italy or Germany.

What happened the last time Inter played Arsenal?

Inter defeated Arsenal 1-0 at the San Siro in a Matchday 4, league phase fixture on November 6, 2024.

Turkish midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu scored what turned out to be the match-winner from the penalty spot just before half time.

The two storied clubs have played three times in Champions League history, with Inter holding a 2-1 edge over the Gunners.

Inter Milan’s team news

In anticipation of Tuesday’s blockbuster clash against Arsenal, Inter coach Cristian Chivu rested stars Alessandro Bastoni and Marcus Thuram in Saturday’s 1-0 win at Udinese.

Thuram will re-enter the starting XI at the expense of Pio Esposito and will lead the line with regular strike partner Lautaro Martinez in Chivu’s well-tested 3-5-2 formation.

The Nerazzurri will likely be without key contributors Hakan Calhanoglu and Denzel Dumfries, both of whom are recovering from leg injuries and are close to a return to match action.

With a top-eight automatic qualification spot into the UCL round of 16 on the line, Chivu is expected to field his strongest possible side against Arsenal.

Inter Milan’s predicted starting lineup (3-5-2):

Arsenal’s team news

In a desperate effort to find some goal scoring, Arteta is tipped to start Bukayo Saka – who was brought on as a second-half substitute in Saturday’s draw with Forest – alongside Noni Madueke and Gabriel Jesus.

Arsenal will continue to be without the injured trio of Max Dowman, Piero Hincapie and Riccardo Calafiori, all of whom are not expected back until the first week of February, at the earliest.

Arsenal’s predicted starting lineup (4-3-3):

Raya (goalkeeper), Lewis-Skelly, Saliba, Magalhaes; Timber, Zubimendi, Rice; Odegaard; Madueke, Jesus, Saka

Ant McPartlin says ‘the old me doesn’t exist’ as he speaks 10 years after drugs battle

Ant McPartlin claims that his life has greatly improved since becoming a father and that he is no longer concerned about the issues that caused him.

After overcoming his drug demons and becoming teetotal, Ant McPartlin claims to be “better man” than he was ten years ago.

The 50-year-old, one half of TV duo Ant and Dec, told how he has matured in recent years since becoming a father. He turned his life around with wife after he was convicted of drink-driving in April 2018 and cancelled TV presenting jobs for the rest of the year. He spent two months in rehab in 2017 after admitting to a painkiller and alcohol addiction.

He claimed the knee operation in 2015 caused the addiction. For Ant and Dec to deal with, the media produced some harsh headlines around this time.

Looking back, Ant said, “I’m reading about this other person who doesn’t exist.” Not me, that’s. And as long as you keep that in mind, you’ll still try to be a good man.

I’m making an effort to turn my life around, and I’m far more successful than I was ten years ago. That’s all I’m happy with. Therefore, my opinion piece won’t alter my day. However, you must truly feel self-assured. Like you must be completely aware of who you are, which is, in my opinion, incredibly challenging.

As they prepare to launch their own podcast this week, Ant and Dec spoke with friend Fearne Cotton on her Happy Place podcast. Annt also praised his wife Anne-Marie Corbett, who he had been dating since 2018 and who he married in August 2021. They are the parents of two daughters who were born in 2024 as a result of Anne-Marie’s relationship with Scott Corbett.

When she and Anne-Marie first got together, she was like a sage because she had the two girls, who were 11 and 13 when we met, and she just knew it all. And I was completely ignorant because I was a sponge and had no idea what to do. And now that Wilder has arrived, it almost seems as though she has lost all memory. We’re both starting over, which is quite nice.

Ant aslo admitted that his 19-month-old son is now “getting told off a lot for swearing” around the house.

The chat also saw Ant’s TV partner Dec opened up about his silent health battle for the first time. The I’m A Celebrity star revealed that he went to therapy about five or six years ago and found it incredibly beneficial.

The Geordie presenter acknowledged that he “can never sit down” and that he “should always be busy doing something. The pair discussed fatherhood in the podcast and how as they have gotten older, their lifelong careers have become more meaningful.

I’m A Celebrity host Dec acknowledged when questioned about his mental health that “I have a low level, constant anxiety about whether I should be doing this or what I’ve got to be doing.” I never feel like I can sit down and watch TV; instead, I always feel like I should be doing something else. There is the skepticism that I should be performing a task somewhere. I have a lot of trouble with that, trying to calm the voice in my head that says, “No, you should be using this time more productively.” About five, five, or six years ago, I had therapy. I really enjoyed it a lot. I really enjoyed it.

The Geordie duo have helmed countless prime-time entertainment programmes throughout their careers, including Ant And Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, Britain’s Got Talent and Ant And Dec’s Limitless Win.

Dec stated, “We always look at how can we bring the entire family together” when we’re looking at projects.

It’s a challenge to try to engage the entire family, which is a no-brainer. You have to try to engage each and every generation. We take it very seriously despite the fact that it’s entertaining and enjoyable.

Ant added: “We do the best job in the world. We have a laugh every day. We’ve hosted some turkeys over the years. It hasn’t always been a success. It’s a privilege to be in someone’s living room on a Saturday night hosting a big show.”

Haas first F1 team to reveal images of 2026 car

For a season in which the sport’s biggest rule change has been made for decades, Haas has become the first team to reveal the look of their new Formula 1 car.

On Monday, digital renders of the new Haas VF26 were made available that included a number of features from the 2026 models.

These are less compact and narrow than the previous designs, and they were built according to customs that had a different aerodynamic philosophy.

The narrower front wing and the engine cover have the most obvious changes.

An engine-cover fin was present in the new Cadillac team’s vehicle, which ran for the first time at Silverstone on Friday in a private test.

It’s going to be a very exciting season, says one fan.

Red Bull and Ford collaborated on a new engine partnership on Thursday in Detroit, but the show car in the team’s new livery was a show car with little to no resemblance to the team’s model from 2026.

The cars and power-units (PU) are both changed by the new 2026 regulations. The engines remain 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrids, but overall performance has significantly increased as a result. Additionally, the engines must run on fully sustainable fuel produced by either industrial synthetic or waste biomass.

Before Bahrain’s first public pre-season test starts on February 11 through to February 20 through a second test on February 18 through to February 20 through a series of online launches, the teams will reveal their vehicles for each vehicle over the course of three weeks.

The final week of January’s test in Barcelona is private and does not permit any independent media.

The Australian Grand Prix will take place in Melbourne on March 6 and 8 for the first race of the season.

Ayao Komatsu, the team’s principal, said Haas’s small, in-flight team faced a significant challenge because of how much of the regulations changed.

No team, even the biggest, would likely say they are fully prepared to deal with this, in my opinion. The challenge is bigger, he said, but for us, it is more significant.

Because of two factors, there will be significant variation between teams.

First is the PU, with the teams likely sharing the same provider, with Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull, and Audi each providing one, respectively.

It’s completely open, and development will start right away, according to the engineer.

Although the first four races may have a pecking order, I believe the season will be very dynamic. When the final races of the year are in full swing, what you see in races one and two should be completely different.

The electrical components account for 50% of the engine’s total power, three times more than they did last year. However, the teams will have to work out how to generate enough energy to power the battery, which will eventually wear out and recharge once every lap.

What’s possible for drivers to manage around a single lap and for a racing scenario over multiple laps, Komatsu said, is what’s going to be a lot of what we’re doing in Barcelona.

We are currently working on our energy management plan, which includes preparing for all those different scenarios before racing and even testing.

We don’t know what we don’t know, so I don’t know if we all fully comprehend the difficulty.

“As with aero development, we’re reasonably satisfied with what we’ve done so far, but as with all new regulations, the question will be: Is the goal we’ve set reasonable enough? I’m sure we’ll encounter a variety of concepts when testing, and if there is a mistake, we must fix it right away.

The updated appearance of the car is a rehash of Haas’ improved relationship with Toyota, whose corporate colors are predominantly white and red.

Oliver Bearman, the British driver who will compete with Esteban Ocon in his second season of Formula 1, said: “I think these changes are the biggest in the history of Formula 1, so I’m very excited about it.

It’s impossible to predict our future. We don’t know how well we stack up, and that won’t be until we qualify in Australia, despite everything I’m seeing from the team.

Piers Morgan takes swipe at Good Morning Britain after breaking his hip

Piers Morgan took to X to make his point to Susanna Reid and Ed Balls after his hospital run, making it clear that he should be at the top of the Good Morning Britain news agenda.

Piers Morgan took offense at Good Morning Britain after Good Morning Britain stifled reporting on his hip operation’s “big news” over the weekend.

Bed-bound Piers tuned in to the show he worked on until his explosive departure in 2021 and wasn’t happy that his dramatic hospitalisation wasn’t top of the agenda. Susanna Reid, Kate Garraway and Ed Balls were discussing the latest headlines and Piers, up early as he continues his recovery, wanted a little more attention.

After not hearing himself mentioned, he took to twitter to register his frustration. Tweeting a photo of the newspaper coverage, he grumbled: “I think you guys are missing the big news today ⁦@susannareid100 @edballs @GMB.” It sounds like his complaint got through.

It wasn’t long before Susanna referenced his hospital stay, remarking that it was “blue Monday”, calling it “the most miserable day of the year”. She said: “Not a great morning for our good friend Piers Morgan, although I have to say, he is recovering well in hospital.

Without prior authorization, content cannot be displayed.

“That was the picture he posted on Instagram. He has a new hip, so good luck with your recovery. I think he’s going to be in the hospital for a few days as he recovers. I think he’s going to be in the hospital for a few days as he recovers.

I made an offer to bring grapes, but he claimed he had enough to start a vineyard, so I was turned down. She continued, “There was a restaurant involved, a stumble, and a whole new hip. So, Piers, get well soon.

Piers, 60, stunned fans after sharing a picture from hospital and announced that he had fractured his femur so badly that he required a hip replacement. Piers explained he had tripped while dining at a restaurant and would have to use crutches to aid his mobility for several weeks.

He shared a photo from a hospital bed, as well as a close up snap of his X-ray, and said: “Breaking news! 1. Tripped on a small step. 2. In a London hotel restaurant. 3. Fractured femur. 4. So badly I needed a new hip. 5. Recovering in hospital. 6. Crutches for 6wks. 7. No long-haul for 12 wks. 8. New Year off to a cracking start! 9. I blame Donald Trump.”

The relationship between them all started when Piers participated in The Celebrity Apprentice 2008, which was then led by Trump, and now it is blamed on Donald Trump. Trump told him, “Piers, you were tactless, ruthless, aggressive, hard, possibly brilliant, you knocked them all out one by one – you win.” Piers eventually won in the end, with Trump saying, “You were tactless, ruthless, aggressive, hard, possibly brilliant, you knocked them all out one by one. Piers has previously claimed that because of their similarity, they can’t get along.

Police Confirm Killing Of NURTW Member In Osun

Kazeem Oyewole, a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NRRTW), was killed in Osun by suspected hoodlums, according to the Osun State police Command.

The Asoje–Orita Elelede axis of Osogbo, where the assailants are said to be based in the Asoje region, was the location of the incident, according to the Command’s spokesperson SP Abiodun Ojelabi, who confirmed the incident.

The victims were chased by the assailants and eventually attacked, according to an eyewitness, Lamina Kamiludeen, who reported to Channels Television that they were riding through Orita Elelede, close to Asoje Junction.

According to him, Kazeem Oyewole, one of the victims, died instantly from machete wounds, while the second victim escaped with multiple injuries.

Dalot ‘would have been given red card in Europe’

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola did not want to blame Diogo Dalot’s red-card escape for the 2-0 defeat at Manchester United on Saturday.

Guardiola was probably being magnanimous due to his side’s disappointing performance in the derby loss at Old Trafford.

Deep down he will surely be thinking that it could have been a different game had Dalot been sent off in the 10th minute when the score was 0-0.

The Portugal international had closed down Jeremy Doku by the touchline. He stretched out a leg to try to intercept the ball but made contact with his studs on the knee of the Manchester City winger.

Referee Anthony Taylor booked Dalot. The video assistant referee (VAR), Craig Pawson, backed up the on-field decision saying the contact was “glancing and not with excessive force”.

The court of public opinion did not agree, especially among former players.

Ex-England striker Alan Shearer told BBC Sport: “I think VAR got that terribly wrong. For me that was a clear red card.

“Forget about whether the contact was ‘glancing’ or not. I can understand why the referee hasn’t given it, it might have been difficult for him to see it, but when the VAR has two professionals looking at that it should have been a very easy decision to give a red card.”

Professional Game Match Officials (PGMO) appears to be comfortable with the yellow card. It believes that too much stock has been placed on the slow motion replay.

The VAR is damned if they do use slow motion replays, and damned if they do not. PGMO would argue that if you watch the incident at normal speed it does not look like there is excessive force.

Yet if this challenge happened in a Champions League game then Uefa would expect Taylor to produce a red card.

Premier League referees’ red card problem

The Premier League insists on a more physical game to protect the fast-paced and full-blooded product which has made it so successful around the globe.

It creates more grey areas in strong challenges which would be more universally seen as a red card on the continent. In adds an extra layer of subjectivity to decision making.

PGMO can get hamstrung at times trying to find the right balance.

Last season the Premier League’s Key Match Incidents Panel deemed there had been seven errors on serious foul play.

The VAR missed three red cards and failed to step in to rescind two others. Two red cards were wrongly shown after a VAR review.

Four players – Evanilson, Bruno Fernandes, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Christian Norgaard – had red cards overturned on appeal.

That is the highest number there has been in one season, a statistic which appears contradictory to the whole point of VAR.

Sarr escapes VAR red card for similar challenge

A decision in Chelsea’s game against Tottenham last April, with Pawson the referee, is worthy of comparison.

Pape Matar Sarr won the ball off Moises Caicedo before striding forward to score.

But Sarr had committed a foul on Caicedo, making clear contact with his studs around the knee of the Chelsea midfielder.

The VAR, Jarred Gillett, sent Pawson to the monitor to disallow the goal. Pawson considered the merits of a red card but Gillett was insistent the challenge was only reckless and a yellow card.

Gillett made a point of showing the challenge in real speed to determine the sanction. Like Pawson on Saturday, Gillett said contact was glancing.

In both cases there was a buckle of the opponent’s knee to indicate a degree of force. Dalot had a straight leg though, which is an indicator of greater force.

In his Match Officials Mic’d Up show afterwards PGMO boss Howard Webb backed a yellow card.

Webb said: “It would have been incorrect to send him off because it’s not excessive force, it’s a reckless contact, so yellow card.”

PGMO would likely say the Dalot decision shows it is being consistent – especially as the same referee was involved in both incidents.

There was no real controversy over the Sarr sanction, no clamour for a red card.

Maybe that was because there was a VAR review to rule out the goal, that the referee had watched the incident again and made his own decision. The KMI Panel did not log the yellow card as an error.

The comments of the referee to the VAR are key. If Taylor has seen the contact of studs on knee and made his own judgement call on that aspect then it is tough for the video referee to get involved.

It is still possible for the VAR to tell the referee he has made a misjudgement over the force in the challenge. But if the referee does give a good description it limits the scope for a review.

Referees are looking for prolonged contact. So if, like with Dalot and Sarr, the full boot makes contact with the leg but it comes off quickly that would be considered glancing.

Compare it to the VAR red card Curtis Jones received in September 2023. It is a decision which still angers Liverpool fans.

Jones contact with the shin of Yves Bissouma and pushed through into the leg as he slid forward to try to play the ball.

PGMO would say this was not present with Dalot’s challenge, so it was “glancing”.
