Senegal Declares Public Holiday After AFCON Win

In honor of Senegal’s victory in the Africa Cup of Nations, Senegal’s president Bassirou Diomaye Faye has authorized Monday to be a paid public holiday throughout the nation.

The Senegalese national football team’s victory in the AFCON 2025 final, which took place on Sunday, January 18, 2026, in Rabat, followed the team’s victory over Morocco.

The public sector workers were given fully paid salaries by the head of state to allow the country to celebrate the victory.

In a match marred by controversy, protracted stops, and players briefly leaving the pitch, Senegal won the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final in Rabat on Sunday night after leading Morocco 1-0 after extra time.

Also, FINA and CAF Condemn ‘Unacceptable Scenes’ In AFCON Final To Take Proper Action

Late in regulation time, a contentious penalty decision awarded to Morocco following a VAR review caused protests from Senegal players.

Senegal players surrounded the referee, which caused chaos as the penalty was given well into stoppage time, and the game was stopped for a while.

‘Unacceptable Scene ‘

The “unacceptable scenes” that ruined Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations final in Rabat have been condemned by FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF). CAF has pledged to take “appropriate action” against those found guilty.

With the score at 0-0, Morocco and Senegal were unable to win the AFCON final until late in the afternoon when referee Jean Jacques Mdala gave Morocco a penalty following a VAR review of a challenge on Brahim Diaz.

Most Senegalese players walked out of the stands in protest, and Moroccan security personnel and some Senegalese fans were involved in altercations.

In a statement released on Monday, CAF expressed regret for some players and officials while skipping to blame either team.

The organization stated that it is reviewing all the available footage and will take the matter to its disciplinary bodies.

The statement from the CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 Final between Morocco and Senegal read, “The Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF) condemns the unacceptable behavior of some players and officials in Rabat last night.”

The CAF firmly condemns any improper behavior that occurs during matches, particularly those that targets the refereeing team or the organizers.

Pioneering ref Cox to retire from international rugby

The first female professional rugby union referee in the world will retire from international officiating.

Cox was appointed by the RFU as its central contract in 2016 and has officiated at the last five Women’s Rugby World Cups. She has also served as an assistant referee in 2014 and 2010 and has officiated at the last three.

The 51 international matches that the Exeter official has overseen are the most by a female official, the last of which was New Zealand’s World Cup quarter-final victory over South Africa at Sandy Park last year.

Cox, who has also officiated at the Commonwealth Games, Six Nations, and Women’s World Series V, said, “I feel very privileged to have officiated at the highest level of the global game for over a decade.

Cox is a frequent player in both the men’s and women’s prem and the Premiership Women’s Rugby.

In the 2023 King’s Birthday Honours Loss, she received an MBE for her contributions to rugby union.

Without the amazing team that surrounds me and a group of fantastic colleagues both in England and while traveling around the world, I wouldn’t be where I am today, she said.

“But most of all, I want to thank my friends and family, especially my mother, who has always been my biggest supporter.

Being able to referee a game at the World Cup in Exeter last summer was a real thrill and it was amazing to do it in front of people who have supported me throughout my career but haven’t always been able to travel to the remote locations where I’ve worked.

“I look forward to continuing to referee in our domestic leagues and hopefully inspiring other women to view match officiating as a responsibility for them.”

Cox, who officiated the rugby sevens at the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games after five years of service in Rio de Janeiro’s first-ever Women’s Sevens competition, took charge of the final at the Covid-19 delayed games in Tokyo.

According to Rugby Football Union CEO Bill Sweeney, “Sara has been a true pioneer for match officials and an inspiration to so many.”

Her skill, perseverance, and passion for the game have helped her break barriers and pave the way for female officiants from other countries.

Riding a perfect 18 points from six matches so far, the Gunners enter this Matchday 7 contest as the UCL frontrunners, but their English Premier League (EPL) form has been far from dominant in 2026, drawing with 17th-placed Nottingham Forest in their most recent domestic fixture on Saturday.

Inter, who co-led the league phase with Arsenal after four rounds, enter this penultimate group stage contest riding a two-match UCL losing streak, including a crushing 1-0 home defeat to Liverpool in their last match on December 9, dropping the Nerazzurri to sixth in the standings.

Al Jazeera Sport takes a closer look at the high-stakes encounter, which might decide automatic qualification entry into the last 16.

Arsenal lead UCL and EPL, but it doesn’t feel like it

The Gunners lead next-best Bayern Munich in the Champions League by three points and front-run Manchester City in the Premier League by seven points, but they are playing far from their best in the new year.

Mikel Arteta’s side have sputtered out of the gate in 2026 with their last EPL victory an unconvincing 3-2 against Bournemouth on January 3, followed by two goalless draws: at home to Liverpool on January 8; and away to lowly Forest on January 17.

It is the first time since the 2012-13 season that Arsenal have recorded back-to-back 0-0 draws in the domestic league, with Arteta conceding that it was “difficult to generate momentum” during the most recent game.

“We came here to win the game, that’s clear, and we needed the opportunities that we had,” he said after the Nottingham setback.

“We haven’t managed that, so the word is disappointment.”

Arsenal remain well on course to end a 22-year wait to win the Premier League title, but they will need to quickly rediscover their offensive touch against a defensive juggernaut like Inter.

Inter hitting peak form

In contrast, Inter have recovered from a slow start to the Serie A season – where they lost two of their first three fixtures – to rapidly climb to the top of the ladder, three points clear of next-best AC Milan, and six points ahead of reigning champions Napoli.

The Nerazzurri are unbeaten in their last 11 domestic league fixtures. They were last defeated in Serie A way back on November 23, a 1-0 home loss in the derby match against Milan.

Will Arsenal qualify for the round of 16 if they beat Inter?

Yes. An Arsenal victory, or even a draw, in Tuesday’s penultimate League phase match against Inter would guarantee the North London outfit finish in the top eight clubs that automatically qualify for the last 16 of the tournament, thereby skipping the two-legged knockout playoff involving those placing ninth to 24th.

When did Inter and Liverpool last win the Champions League?

Arsenal have never won the UEFA Champions League title. They came closest in the 2005-06 season, losing the final to Barcelona 2-1.

Inter last won in 2010, overcoming Bayern Munich 2-0 in the final to complete the treble, a feat never achieved before by any team from either Italy or Germany.

What happened the last time Inter played Arsenal?

Inter defeated Arsenal 1-0 at the San Siro in a Matchday 4, league phase fixture on November 6, 2024.

Turkish midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu scored what turned out to be the match-winner from the penalty spot just before half time.

The two storied clubs have played three times in Champions League history, with Inter holding a 2-1 edge over the Gunners.

Inter Milan’s team news

In anticipation of Tuesday’s blockbuster clash against Arsenal, Inter coach Cristian Chivu rested stars Alessandro Bastoni and Marcus Thuram in Saturday’s 1-0 win at Udinese.

Thuram will re-enter the starting XI at the expense of Pio Esposito and will lead the line with regular strike partner Lautaro Martinez in Chivu’s well-tested 3-5-2 formation.

The Nerazzurri will likely be without key contributors Hakan Calhanoglu and Denzel Dumfries, both of whom are recovering from leg injuries and are close to a return to match action.

With a top-eight automatic qualification spot into the UCL round of 16 on the line, Chivu is expected to field his strongest possible side against Arsenal.

Arsenal’s team news

In a desperate effort to find some goal scoring, Arteta is tipped to start Bukayo Saka – who was brought on as a second-half substitute in Saturday’s draw with Forest – alongside Noni Madueke and Gabriel Jesus.

Arsenal will continue to be without the injured trio of Max Dowman, Piero Hincapie and Riccardo Calafiori, all of whom are not expected back until the first week of February, at the earliest.

Arsenal’s predicted starting lineup (4-3-3):

Raya (goalkeeper), Lewis-Skelly, Saliba, Magalhaes; Timber, Zubimendi, Rice; Odegaard; Madueke, Jesus, Saka

Ant McPartlin says ‘the old me doesn’t exist’ as he speaks 10 years after drugs battle

Ant McPartlin claims that his life has greatly improved since becoming a father and that he is no longer concerned about the issues that caused him.

After overcoming his drug demons and becoming teetotal, Ant McPartlin claims to be “better man” than he was ten years ago.

The 50-year-old, one half of TV duo Ant and Dec, told how he has matured in recent years since becoming a father. He turned his life around with wife after he was convicted of drink-driving in April 2018 and cancelled TV presenting jobs for the rest of the year. He spent two months in rehab in 2017 after admitting to a painkiller and alcohol addiction.

He claimed the knee operation in 2015 caused the addiction. For Ant and Dec to deal with, the media produced some harsh headlines around this time.

Looking back, Ant said, “I’m reading about this other person who doesn’t exist.” Not me, that’s. And as long as you keep that in mind, you’ll still try to be a good man.

I’m making an effort to turn my life around, and I’m far more successful than I was ten years ago. That’s all I’m happy with. Therefore, my opinion piece won’t alter my day. However, you must truly feel self-assured. Like you must be completely aware of who you are, which is, in my opinion, incredibly challenging.

As they prepare to launch their own podcast this week, Ant and Dec spoke with friend Fearne Cotton on her Happy Place podcast. Annt also praised his wife Anne-Marie Corbett, who he had been dating since 2018 and who he married in August 2021. They are the parents of two daughters who were born in 2024 as a result of Anne-Marie’s relationship with Scott Corbett.

When she and Anne-Marie first got together, she was like a sage because she had the two girls, who were 11 and 13 when we met, and she just knew it all. And I was completely ignorant because I was a sponge and had no idea what to do. And now that Wilder has arrived, it almost seems as though she has lost all memory. We’re both starting over, which is quite nice.

Ant aslo admitted that his 19-month-old son is now “getting told off a lot for swearing” around the house.

The chat also saw Ant’s TV partner Dec opened up about his silent health battle for the first time. The I’m A Celebrity star revealed that he went to therapy about five or six years ago and found it incredibly beneficial.

The Geordie presenter acknowledged that he “can never sit down” and that he “should always be busy doing something. The pair discussed fatherhood in the podcast and how as they have gotten older, their lifelong careers have become more meaningful.

I’m A Celebrity host Dec acknowledged when questioned about his mental health that “I have a low level, constant anxiety about whether I should be doing this or what I’ve got to be doing.” I never feel like I can sit down and watch TV; instead, I always feel like I should be doing something else. There is the skepticism that I should be performing a task somewhere. I have a lot of trouble with that, trying to calm the voice in my head that says, “No, you should be using this time more productively.” About five, five, or six years ago, I had therapy. I really enjoyed it a lot. I really enjoyed it.

The Geordie duo have helmed countless prime-time entertainment programmes throughout their careers, including Ant And Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, Britain’s Got Talent and Ant And Dec’s Limitless Win.

Dec stated, “We always look at how can we bring the entire family together” when we’re looking at projects.

It’s a challenge to try to engage the entire family, which is a no-brainer. You have to try to engage each and every generation. We take it very seriously despite the fact that it’s entertaining and enjoyable.

Ant added: “We do the best job in the world. We have a laugh every day. We’ve hosted some turkeys over the years. It hasn’t always been a success. It’s a privilege to be in someone’s living room on a Saturday night hosting a big show.”

Haas first F1 team to reveal images of 2026 car

Haas

For a season in which the sport’s biggest rule change has been made for decades, Haas has become the first team to reveal the look of their new Formula 1 car.

On Monday, digital renders of the new Haas VF26 were made available that included a number of features from the 2026 models.

These are less compact and narrow than the previous designs, and they were built according to customs that had a different aerodynamic philosophy.

The narrower front wing and the engine cover have the most obvious changes.

An engine-cover fin was present in the new Cadillac team’s vehicle, which ran for the first time at Silverstone on Friday in a private test.

It’s going to be a very exciting season, says one fan.

Red Bull and Ford collaborated on a new engine partnership on Thursday in Detroit, but the show car in the team’s new livery was a show car with little to no resemblance to the team’s model from 2026.

The cars and power-units (PU) are both changed by the new 2026 regulations. The engines remain 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrids, but overall performance has significantly increased as a result. Additionally, the engines must run on fully sustainable fuel produced by either industrial synthetic or waste biomass.

Before Bahrain’s first public pre-season test starts on February 11 through to February 20 through a second test on February 18 through to February 20 through a series of online launches, the teams will reveal their vehicles for each vehicle over the course of three weeks.

The final week of January’s test in Barcelona is private and does not permit any independent media.

The Australian Grand Prix will take place in Melbourne on March 6 and 8 for the first race of the season.

Ayao Komatsu, the team’s principal, said Haas’s small, in-flight team faced a significant challenge because of how much of the regulations changed.

No team, even the biggest, would likely say they are fully prepared to deal with this, in my opinion. The challenge is bigger, he said, but for us, it is more significant.

Because of two factors, there will be significant variation between teams.

First is the PU, with the teams likely sharing the same provider, with Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull, and Audi each providing one, respectively.

It’s completely open, and development will start right away, according to the engineer.

Although the first four races may have a pecking order, I believe the season will be very dynamic. When the final races of the year are in full swing, what you see in races one and two should be completely different.

    • 17 December 2025

The electrical components account for 50% of the engine’s total power, three times more than they did last year. However, the teams will have to work out how to generate enough energy to power the battery, which will eventually wear out and recharge once every lap.

What’s possible for drivers to manage around a single lap and for a racing scenario over multiple laps, Komatsu said, is what’s going to be a lot of what we’re doing in Barcelona.

We are currently working on our energy management plan, which includes preparing for all those different scenarios before racing and even testing.

We don’t know what we don’t know, so I don’t know if we all fully comprehend the difficulty.

“As with aero development, we’re reasonably satisfied with what we’ve done so far, but as with all new regulations, the question will be: Is the goal we’ve set reasonable enough? I’m sure we’ll encounter a variety of concepts when testing, and if there is a mistake, we must fix it right away.

The updated appearance of the car is a rehash of Haas’ improved relationship with Toyota, whose corporate colors are predominantly white and red.

Oliver Bearman, the British driver who will compete with Esteban Ocon in his second season of Formula 1, said: “I think these changes are the biggest in the history of Formula 1, so I’m very excited about it.

It’s impossible to predict our future. We don’t know how well we stack up, and that won’t be until we qualify in Australia, despite everything I’m seeing from the team.
