New storm to hit Gaza, piling on suffering for thousands of displaced

Gaza is expected to experience further suffering from hundreds of thousands of Palestinians who are already unable to withstand the harsh winter weather.

Nearly all of Gaza’s two million people have been forced to live in these temporary shelters as a result of Israel’s more than two-year genocidal conflict.

According to a report released last week by Gaza’s Government Media Office, 127, 000 of the 135, 000 tents in displacement camps have been made unusable as a result of recent extreme weather.

According to Al Jazeera’s Tareq Abu Azzoum, who was reporting from Gaza City on Monday, “the reality on the ground tells a very painful and grim story.”

“Hundreds of thousands of displaced families are still living in torn tents and roofless homes that have been subjected to the cold, rain, and freezing nights.”

According to Abu Azzoum, Israeli restrictions directly cause this suffering because Israel hasn’t been allowing the “entry of prefabricated mobile housing units and the building materials that are essential for winter protection” or the flow of desperately needed basic humanitarian aid.

Aid deliveries were supposed to be significantly increased under a United States-brokered ceasefire, which came into force on October 10 and which Israel has violated nearly daily. At least 600 trucks a day are scheduled to enter Gaza to meet the needs of the population.

Since the ceasefire, only 145 trucks have reportedly entered Gaza, according to the government media office.

Palestinians have been “improvising by reinforcing their makeshift tents with plastic sheets, keeping themselves fully clothed, and burning scraps inside the makeshift tents to use them for heating because fuel supplies and heating mechanisms along the Strip are unaffordable,” according to Abu Azzoum.

Winter in Palestine can be “very brutal,” he said, but what makes this one even worse is that it comes after months of “displacement, hunger, and exhaustion.”

According to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, at least 25 people have died as a result of Israeli bombing, which has also caused the relentless destruction of previously damaged buildings.

The harsh winter conditions “are among the most affected” by the elderly, the sick, and the children, according to Abu Azzoum.

According to a report released last week by the Government Media Office, 21 children have died as a result of cold exposure.

In a statement, it stated that “all the victims were Palestinians who had been forced to flee their homes.”

A spokesperson for the Palestinian Civil Defense in Gaza reported last week that hospitals across the country have been seeing an increase in patients with cold-related illnesses, particularly children, and that the organization has received hundreds of calls for help from people with extreme cold.

‘Not young any more’ – Wawrinka, 40, battles into second round

Stan Wawrinka won his first Grand Slam title 20 years ago, and he made his main-draw Australian Open debut there 12 years later.

He admits to himself that he is “not young any more.”

The 40-year-old has shortened his farewell tour to Melbourne after defeating Laslo Djere from Serbia in four sets in the first round.

Wildcard Wawrinka, who will retire at the end of the 2026 season, battled against Djere, the 92nd-ranked player, for three hours and 20 minutes.

The Swiss won the fourth set 7-5, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), and then came back from a break down in the third set to win.

Wawrinka won the Australian Open for the first time in five years, and he won for the first time since 2024 at Wimbledon.

Wawrinka, who is 40 years and 296 days old, is the second-oldest player to win a men’s singles match at Melbourne Park, trailing only Ivo Karlovic (40 years and 326 days) in 2020.

Wawrinka made it clear that he is not just in Melbourne to say goodbye, despite bringing the curtain down on his “long journey” in professional tennis.

My final year, I said. He claimed that although the passion is still present, he is no longer a child.

“Today was amazing, it’s so special for me to enter the court and enter a Grand Slam.

” It’s the reason I practise hard with my team every off-season and every day, to have a chance to compete with the best players in the world.

“I’m a competitor so I’m always going to fight. Hopefully I’m going to play another good match”.

World number 139 Wawrinka, having received vocal support throughout the match, celebrated by pointing to all four corners of the Show Court Arena to encourage even more noise.

“Only at the end of the match, I started to think a little bit and I got too much emotion about maybe what could happen”, Wawrinka added.

Cilic comes close to rare ‘ triple bagel ‘

Cilic’s first-round match was in stark contrast to Wawrinka’s, with the 2018 finalist beating Altmaier 6-0 6-0 7-6 (6-3).

After rattling through the opening two sets in just 50 minutes and winning 13 consecutive games, the big-serving Croat was on course for a rare “triple bagel” – a feat which has only been achieved by five players in the main draw of a Grand Slam in the professional era.

Spain’s Sergi Bruguera was the last player to do so, beating Thierry Champion 6-0 6-0 6-0 in the 1993 French Open second round.

However, Altmaier finally got on the scoreboard for 1-1 in the third and went on to force a tie-break, with Cilic coming from 2-0 down to seal his first win in Melbourne since 2022.

FIFA Condemns Senegal For ‘Unacceptable Scenes’ In AFCON Final

Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, criticized “some Senegal players” for the “unacceptable scenes” that hampered their elimination from Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations final when they walked off the pitch in protest of a penalty awarded to Morocco.

“We firmly condemn the actions of some “supporters,” Senegalese players, and technical staff members. In a statement sent to AFP, Infantino remarked, “It is unacceptable to leave the field of play in this manner.”

“Violence cannot be tolerated in our sport in this manner, and it is simply wrong,” the statement reads.

Most Senegalese players left the field of play shortly before the match was even 0-0, and Morocco were given a spot kick following a VAR check for a challenge on Brahim Diaz.

Sadio Mane, a former Senegal international star, pleaded with his teammates to return to the field for the penalty while he was still present.

They already grew out after a soft-looking foul minutes earlier was turned down for a goal at the other end.

Meanwhile, some Senegalese fans attempted to enter the arena and started fighting with security personnel as they did so.

Before Diaz could convert, the game was delayed by almost 20 minutes, when Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy saved his weak “panenka” kick.

In the fourth minute of extra time, Pape Gueye scored a brilliant goal to give his team a 1-0 victory.

While praising Morocco for its “fantastic tournament, both as runners-up and exceptional hosts,” Infantino said that the teams must adhere to the match officials’ directives ahead of their co-hosting the men’s 2030 World Cup.

He urged players to always adhere to the match officials’ decisions, both on and off the field of play.

Anything less threatens the very essence of football, according to the Laws of the Game. “Teams must compete on the pitch and within the laws of the game.”

Infantino said images like those from Sunday sent the wrong message to supporters all over the world, despite the fact that he will be hoping there won’t be any of these scenes in the upcoming World Cup finals being co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

According to him, “It is also the responsibility of teams and players to act ethically and set the right example for the fans in the stadiums and millions of viewers around the world.”

Japan’s PM Takaichi will dissolve parliament, call snap election

Sanae Takaichi, the prime minister of Japan, has announced that she will dissolve parliament on Friday and hold general elections to appoint candidates for her spending and other policies.

Three months into her first-ever female prime minister position, she announced the snap election announcement on Monday.

At a press conference, Takaichi stated that “I, as the prime minister, have decided to dissolve the lower house on January 23.”

The snap election on February 8 will determine all 465 of Takaichi’s parliamentary lower house seats and mark his first electoral test since taking office.

Withholding a vote early would enable her to capitalize on strong public support to consolidate her position within the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and strengthen the fragile majority in her coalition.

At a time when the public is most concerned about the rising cost of living, the election will test voter appetite for higher spending. According to a poll conducted by NHK last week, 46% of respondents cited prices as their top concern, followed by 16% for diplomacy and 16% for national security.

Takaichi announced last week that she would hold snap elections while keeping her diplomatic schedule in mind.

The prime minister met with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on January 13 to talk about security and economic ties between the two countries in her hometown of Nara.

On the rumor that Takaichi would hold snap elections to capitalize on strong poll results, Tokyo shares increased by more than 3 percent on Tuesday.

Taiwan tussle with China

According to the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper, a clear mandate for Takaichi and the LDP could also aid in breaking the diplomatic stalemate.

Since Takaichi suggested in November that Japan might launch an attack on Taiwan, the self-proclaimed island nation, in November, ties have seriously deteriorated.

Beijing has reportedly been choking off exports of rare-earth products crucial to making everything from electric cars to missiles, and it has announced a broad ban on “dual-use” goods with potential military applications.

Takaichi stated last month that she was “always open” to discussions with China.

The Lee administration, for its part, has emphasized its desire to “restore” ties with China, which continues to be South Korea’s largest trading partner. It also asserts that Lee’s “practical diplomacy” aims to maintain strong ties with both Japan and the United States, South Korea’s most important allies.

Seoul’s relationship to Washington and Tokyo was bolstered by Yoon Suk-yeol’s predecessor, Lee, and China’s position on Taiwan was being criticized more.

Downton Abbey star breaks silence on new girlfriend after splitting with wife of 25 years

Hugh Bonneville and Heidi Kadlecova began dating months after confirming that his marriage to Lulu Williams had ended after 25 years, and he claims he feels “blessed.”

After separating from his 25-year marriage and finding love once more, Hugh Bonneville addressed his new relationship for the first time.

The Downton Abbey favourite and his long-term wife Lulu Williams announced their split in September 2023. The end of their decades of marriage came after the star lost his mother, brother and father in the space of six traumatic years for the 62-year-old.

But happiness was ahead and in October 2024, Hugh confirmed he was in a new relationship with Heidi Kadlecova. According to reports, he has introduced to the vegan influencer by the cast and crew of movie, Go Away!. During their time on set, the pair were reportedly spotted sharing cuddles in between scenes.

The Paddington and Harry Potter actor has now spoken about moving on and said: “I do feel very blessed and very content to have started a new chapter. I am more accepting of the wheel of life and how fortunate I have been to have, on the whole, good health and to do something I love.”

Hugh reflected on the immense loss he experienced after the passing of his mother Patricia while he was speaking to Saga Magazine. He claimed that the funeral director and the entire family had temporarily numbed the grief. I didn’t read any of the condolence or letter of commiseration until a year later when I traveled to India with them all.

I went on my own to this incredibly quiet, peaceful hotel in the middle of nowhere to read all the letters and completely let it out while filming. Everything is emotion. That did a lot of catharsis.

Heidi and Hugh are both improving, and it was rumored that Claire Rankin, who played roles in Molly’s Game and Seven in Heaven, and Ally McBeal, was dating her right away after his split. In March, they were spotted together, but they decided not to comment on the rumors. Heidi and Hugh were spotted together in July.

Hugh and Lulu’s love story was the stuff of fairy tales, having first crossed paths in their teen years, only to rekindle their romance decades later thanks to a little matchmaking from Hugh’s mother, Patricia.

Lulu was running a marquee company, his mother reportedly contacted her to request some chairs or something and said, “Do you remember Hugh?” and we stayed in touch after that. I was so upset that I had to give my mother full credit for introducing us again.

In West Sussex, England, they once shared a space with each other and had previously stated that they had not wanted Hollywood’s glitz to affect them.

Hugh and Lulu are proud parents of Felix, their son, who is 23 years old. Although the couple made the decision to maintain a relatively private family life, Hugh once addressed fatherhood in the parenting magazine Parents.

He said, “I believe the most important thing to do is not force your child to do things like playing the piano or something else.” Another wise word of wisdom was once given to me when my young child arrived, “Hold him close, and let him fly.” “

It’s unfortunate because they were known as a very sociable couple, according to a source close to the couple. This year, Hugh has been filming a lot from home. He appeared trim, tanned, and relaxed this summer, and they reported to The Sun, “he has lost a little weight.”
