Eager fans spent almost the whole day on Friday queuing in sun to get a ticket for the Cannes Film Festival premiere of new Western/Horror movie Eddington.

The new release stars a number of famous faces, including Austin Butler, Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone and Joaquin Phoenix. Taking to the red carpet, the cast were out in full force as they all made their 2025 Cannes debut at the premiere, while Angelina Jolie was amongst the night’s very famous guests.

Angelina looked stunning as she donned a strapless gown for the event, while Natalie Portman commanded attention in a sparkling ensemble while Julia Garner – who has been in Cannes since the festival kicked off – opted for a lilac gown.

But the high profile arrivals from 6:45pm were prefaced by hopeful fans getting into position from 11am in order to secure last minute tickets. For those who didn’t manage to get a ticket, the festival offers a ‘last minute line’ where hopeful guests can bag a free seat, if they aren’t all filled.

With a black tie dress code for the premiere, many were suited and booted early in the morning and were forced to sit on the ground while holding a spot for a potential ticket all day.

Inside the premiere, the film received a five-minute standing ovation from the crowd – a middle to high ground for Cannes premieres. Earlier in the week, Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning was also around the five-minute mark for a standing ovation.

Last year, the Demi Moore-fronted flick The Substance topped the charts for ovations with an impressive 11 minutes of claps.

Set in the COVID-19 pandemic, Eddington tells the story of a stand-off between a small-town sheriff and the town’s mayor, portrayed by Pedro and Joaquin, respectively.

Elvis star Austin plays a supporting role in the film alongside Emma Stone. However, he may be back at Cannes next year with a leading role after it was recently reported that he is set to take on the role of Patrick Bateman in a modern remake of American Psycho.

The actor will collaborate with acclaimed director Luca Guadagnino for a fresh cinematic interpretation of Bret Easton Ellis’s cult-classic novel.

In December, Variety confirmed the casting, announcing that the project is being developed by Lionsgate and will bring a bold new vision to the psychological thriller.
