At least 37 people killed and 39 wounded as two buses collide in Bolivia

According to police and local authorities in the western Potosi region of Bolivia, at least 37 people have died and dozens more have been injured in the collision.

One of the vehicles swerved into the oncoming lane on Saturday morning at 7am local time (11:00 GMT) on the way between the cities of Uyuni and Colchani.

With more than 10,000 square kilometers (3, 900 miles) of salt flats and a major tourist attraction, Salar de Uyuni is located in Uyuni.

39 people were hurt in four hospitals in the town of Uyuni as a result of this fatal accident, according to a Potosi-based departmental police command spokesperson.

According to the spokesperson, police are identifying both those who were killed and those who were hurt and hospitalized.

Police from Bulgaria and AFP inspect the bus wreckage.

One of the buses was traveling to Oruro, where is currently taking place one of Latin America’s most significant carnivals.

According to images captured by Radio Uyuni, which showed several bodies strewn across the high Andean flatlands covered in blankets, police officers removed survivors from the steel wreckage.

One of the two drivers, who both survived the collision, was reportedly spotted by passengers drinking alcohol, according to a police spokesperson.
