In the flash floods that have affected Gansu province in northwest China, at least 10 people have died and 33 are missing, according to state media.
“Severe, persistent heavy rain has caused flash floods since August 7.” As of 3:30 PM (07:30 GMT) on August 8, 33 people have died and are still missing, according to state broadcaster CCTV on Friday.
According to CCTV, Chinese President Xi Jinping reportedly directed “all-out” rescue operations and made “utmost effort” to locate the missing.
Xi urged all regions to “resolutely overcome complacency” and increase efforts to identify risks because of the “frequent occurrence of extreme weather,” the broadcaster continued.
Rescuers were seen waving through rushing grey water in a village according to footage that Chinese fire authorities posted on the social media platform Weibo.
Roads covered in silt and large stones were depicted in photos taken by Gansu’s government.
In what meteorologists refer to as extreme weather that is related to climate change, record rainfall has recently slammed China’s north and south.
