Tom Aspinall, the reigning UFC heavyweight champion, will have surgery to repair the “nightmare” eye condition he sustained in his title fight against Ciryl Gane.
In the first round of the UFC 321 headline bout in Abu Dhabi in October, Frenchman Gane poked the Briton, 32, in the both eyes.
Aspinall, who was attempting to defend the title for the first time, was unable to continue, so the fight was declared a no-show.
He was identified with “significant traumatic bilateral Brown’s syndrome” and “permanent double vision” in November.
Aspinall explained in a video posted on the YouTube channel of British UFC fighter Paddy Pimblett, “It’s been a bit of a long process because they fix them right away with other injuries.”
They try to let their eyes heal naturally because it’s obviously dangerous.
“We’re having surgery,” he said. It will cause me to linger a little. How long will it take?
We’ll have a meeting about it soon. It’s been a laborious process, to be honest.
Gane’s eye poke was determined to be accidental by referee Jason Herzog.
However, Aspinall claimed that during the brief, four-minute, 35 second fight, he was struck in the eye three times.
Aspinall remarked, “Two times in a row, I think.”
The points deduction ought to be eliminated. The first is a tragic accident, the second is a deliberate one.
