Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal’s dramatic decision to sever Eberechi Eze from them is a ruthless declaration of intent meant to demonstrate that this is the season they intend to finally win the biggest prizes.

On Wednesday, Spurs showed signs of the England international’s readiness to greet him at Crystal Palace, with almost no evidence that the 27-year-old had agreed to the move.

Then it became apparent that Arsenal were considering the seriousness of forward Kai Havertz’s knee injury, which could have a significant impact on how their attacking resources were affected when manager Mikel Arteta’s side came out last year with a fifth consecutive defeat.

Arsenal broke in spectacular style by launching a £60m coup to bring Eze to Emirates Stadium from right under Spurs, as was initially anticipated and instead of exploring the less expensive option of loaning, as was initially anticipated.

Eze’s departure to Arsenal is not just a devastating psychological blow directed at Spurs across north London, which is currently fully anticipated to be successfully completed.

It sends a clear message to the fans that they have no intention of slipping short of their stated goals of regaining their Premier League title and advancing to the Champions League after reaching the semi-final last year.

It is a strategy in stark contrast to the inertia that plagued Arsenal last season, when they lost money trying to sign a recognized striker despite having done so for a while.

Spurs initially thought they had Eze covered up and the possibility of a cash-plus-Richarlison deal was discussed, but Arsenal quickly stepped up when they realized Havertz might have had to watch from the sidelines for a while.

Eze has been a target for Arsenal all summer, but it was believed that their interest had waned after Ethan Nwaneri, along with Noni Madueke, signed a new five-year contract.

Arteta has received a lot of support from Arsenal’s hierarchy because he is aware that this is the season he must win a major prize.

The Gunners have made moves to sign Spain’s top midfielder Martin Zubimendi in a deal worth up to £60 million, as well as Madueke, and signed a renowned striker Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon for at least 12 months later.

Arsenal will acquire a versatile forward with a wealth of natural talent who can match-winner in Eze, who had two more years left on his Palace contract when he scored the winner against Manchester City in the FA Cup final in May.

Following the incredible right-footed winner that gave Palace a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa at Wembley in the semi-final, When Fulham defeated 3-0 at Craven Cottage in the quarter-final, Ze also scored the Eagles’ opener.

When Eze led Palace to their first major trophy in their history, he has demonstrated that he has the temperament and talent for the big things.

Arsenal will hope to see him through all of those situations.

With 14 goals in all competitions last season, he is a scorer and goal creator, which poses a real threat to Arsenal’s front line.

Eze was a young Arsenal fan up until he was 13 years old and a member of the club’s academy. Although he initially wanted to move to Spurs, he soon realized that the Gunners only had access to one side of north London.

Prior to joining Queen’s Park Rangers, he spent time at Fulham, Reading, and Millwall, where he spent his time. In August 2020, he left Loftus Road and moved to Palace in a £19.5 million deal.

Spurs believe they did everything in their power to reach a deal, aside from actually striking one, but it is a hammer blow to chairman Daniel Levy and manager Thomas Frank, who initially believed they had a deal for Morgan Gibbs-White before he signed a new deal with Nottingham Forest.

Spurs’ prime transfer target may be a target for Arsenal, but the wider context demonstrates how determined the Gunners are to end the decade-long wait for success.
