Sir Gary Oldman, 67, a London-born actor, played a number of figures in the King’s Birthday Honours, including prime minister Sir Winston Churchill and Sex Pistols hellraiser Sid Vicious.

Oscar-winning actor Sir Gary Oldman has received a knighthood at Windsor Castle from Prince William.

In the King’s Birthday Honours, the 67-year-old film star, who was born in London, was honored for his dramatic contributions. In his long career, Oldman has played a variety of roles, including those in the Sex Pistols and Sir Winston Churchill’s former prime minister.

In Apple TV’s Slow Horses, based on the Slough House book series written by British author Mick Herron, one of his more recent and well-known roles is that of veteran MI5 agent Jackson Lamb.

In the early 1990s, he appeared as the titular vampire in Bram Stoker’s Dracula and as the alleged assassin of US President John F. Kennedy.

In 1997, his semi-autobiographical film Nil By Mouth, which was praised as brilliant but heartbreakingly moving, was released.

In 1998, he was awarded the award for outstanding British film and best original screenplay.

Across the Noughties and into the 2010s he appeared in some of the Harry Potter films as Harry’s godfather, Sirius Black, and also starred as Gotham City Police lieutenant Jim Gordon in Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008) and The Dark Knight Rises (2012).

In the 2011 film Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, he received Bafta and Oscar nominations for his portrayal of George Smiley.

Prior to his role in The Darkest Hour, where he swept the 2018 awards season, earning an Academy Award, Bafta, and more, he was unable to capture the leading actor award.

Samantha Morton, the actress who won the Bafta award, and Rachel Daly, the 2022 Euro-winning, are also among the names honored on Tuesday.

Morton, 48, who is renowned for her roles in The Serpent Queen and Longford, will receive an OBE for her contributions to drama and charity.

Before starring in period dramas like Emma in 1996 and Jane Eyre in 1997, she made her first TV appearances in 1991 with Soldier Soldier and Boon.

Morton received her first British Independent Film Award (Bifa) nomination for best actress in 1998 for her role in Carine Adler’s indie film Under The Skin.

She received the Richard Harris Award in 2022 for her outstanding contribution to British cinema, and in 2002 she won the best actress award for Morvern Callar.

The actress and director also received two Oscar nominations, including those for In America and Sweet And Lowdown in 2000.

For her portrayal of the young murderer Myra Hindley in the TV series Longford, she received a Golden Globe in 2008.

Morton also co-wrote and directed the TV series The Unloved, which is based on her first-hand knowledge of the British care system, and won the 2010 Bafta TV Awards for best single drama.

In the 2002 sci-fi action film Minority Report, she co-starred with Tom Cruise, and she co-starred with Mary Lou in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016).

Morton dedicated the award, which is the academy’s highest honor, to children in care last year, with the Bafta fellowship.
