What to know about Ariana Grande’s changing appearance and weight loss

  • During the press tour for the first Wicked movie last year, Ariana Grande sparked concern amongst fans as she appeared to have lost a lot of weight. Fans were worried that the star was suffering from an eating disorder. One said on X:”I hope Ariana Is healthy. I hope, she gains some weight. Healthy weight. Women should love their body without dieting crazy. One day, I hope to see that women are seen beautiful at a healthy weight. Not being Rail thin.”
  • This year, during the press tour for the sequel, Wicked: For Good, she sparked concern again. Many feared for not just Ariana, but her co-star Cynthia Erivo. “It’s concerning how thin Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo are now,” one fan wrote. Another shared a video of the two stars before and after filming and added: “Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande before vs after Wicked. What happened to them?”
  • However, Ariana hit back at the scrutiny by resharing a clip of an interview in which she spoke about her body. In the interview, she said: “In today’s society, there is a comfortability that we shouldn’t have at all – commenting on others’ looks, appearance, what they think is going on behind the scenes, or health or how they present themselves … that I think is really dangerous.”
  • But, online, some fans have referred to Ariana’s changing appearance as “thinspo”, along with hashtags such as #ed and #ana, which refer to ‘eating disorder’ and ‘anorexia’ respectively. On TikTok, Teniola Keck, a musician who has also struggled with disordered eating, said: “We can’t just keep saying it’s not your body, you can’t comment on it, when not commenting on it is leading to a rise in ED culture, a rise in restrictive eating, a rise in literally just everyone wanting to be smaller.”
  • Ariana has also claimed that the weight she used to be was her at her “most unhealthy”. In 2023, the star took to TikTok to say: “There are many different ways to look healthy and beautiful. And personally, for me, the body that you’ve been comparing my current body to was the unhealthiest version of my body.”
