Anthropic launches AI advisory council to boost ties with Washington

In an effort to strengthen ties with Washington and allies as AI becomes more important to defense, Anthropic, an artificial intelligence company, established a National Security and Public Sector Advisory Council.

The new panel was made public on Wednesday by the San Francisco-based start-up.

In light of the council’s launch, AI companies’ growing efforts to influence government policies and ensure that their technology supports democratic interests in a world of constant competition.

Even though neither company has set up a dedicated national security advisory council, rivals like OpenAI and Google DeepMind are starting to talk with governments and regulators about AI safety.

Former US senators and senior US Department of Defense, intelligence, and energy and justice officials are gathered in Anthropic’s council.

It will provide guidance to Anthropic regarding incorporating AI into sensitive government operations while developing security, ethics, and compliance standards.

The Center for a New American Security is led by Richard Fontaine, a former intelligence committee director, and former senator Roy Blunt, a former senator, and former deputy CIA director David Cohen.

In both the Republican and Democratic administrations, other appointees held important positions in the fields of nuclear and legal affairs.

Anthropic said the organization will provide guidance on pressing issues in cybersecurity, intelligence analysis, and scientific research while assisting in the development of responsible AI use standards for the industry.

As partnerships with public-sector organizations expand, the organization intends to expand.

A $200 million program to develop AI tools for defense was launched by the Pentagon last month, highlighting the sector’s effort to balance innovation and security risks. The initiative reflects the rise in the global competition for AI capabilities, with Washington aiming to outperform rivals like China and Russia.
