British boxing champion Anthony Joshua was killed in a car accident in Nigeria that left two people injured.
On a major expressway close to Lagos, the former world champion was a passenger in a truck that collided with a stationary truck.
The 36-year-old was escorted out of a wrecked SUV by a video from the scene.
The boxer’s security team also rescued Joshua and the other man, the driver of the car, according to them.
On Monday, around 12:00 local time (11:00 GMT), the collision occurred on the busy Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
Federal Highway Safety CorpsBased on preliminary findings, the FRSC claimed that the Lexus was “suspected to be traveling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit.”
The vehicle reportedly “lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre” and collided with a stationary truck by the side of the road.
A crowd of onlookers gathered around a wrecked car in photos that the FRSC shared.
Adeniyi OrojoJoshua, who was born in Watford, was raised in Sagamu, a town in Ogun State, south-west of Nigeria, close to the crash site.
Following his recent victory over American YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul on December 19, he had been spending time in the area.
After the crash, Paul wrote on X that life is much more important than boxing. I’m praying for all those who have lost their lives, including AJ, and those who have been a victim of today’s tragic accident.

According to local police commissioner Lanre Ogunlowo, an accident investigation had been ordered.
Joshua’s family in Nigeria received the news of the accident as a “shock” according to a relative who asked not to be named.
They prayed for the victims of the crash and said they were hopeful for his “simple recovery.”
The family member confirmed that Joshua was travelling from Lagos to Ogun State when the accident happened. His family had been expecting him to join them in Sagamu for New Year celebrations.
The boxer’s family is well-known in the town and has been there for a long time.
