Anisimova stuns Swiatek to avenge heavy Wimbledon final defeat

Amanda Anisimova won the US Open semi-finals after beating the second seed in the Wimbledon final against Iga Swiatek.

Swiatek, a Polish champion, defeated Anisimova 6-0, 6-0 to claim the title in a one-sided showpiece at SW19.

However, the American won 6-4, 6-3 in a high-quality match in New York, demonstrating her true potential.

In stark contrast to the Wimbledon final, eighth-seeded Anisimova appeared confident and at ease, producing 23 winners as her powerful debut beat Swiatek.

The 24-year-old said, “I’ve been having the run of my life here.”

“I was like OK, let’s try and get through one round when I first arrived here.”

Such a dream, I must say. It’s really special for me to return from Wimbledon that way.

“I worked really hard to change that,” he said. I can do it, as today demonstrated to me.

Anisimova showed incredible resilience to advance to a major semi-final so quickly after taking a two-year break from the sport in 2022 to protect her mental health.

The Wimbledon final might have come to mind when Swiatek took Anisimova’s serve in the opening match of the quarter-final.

However, Anisimova continued to follow her plan this time around. She fought back and forth before bidding her time as she served brilliantly and had excellent backhand skills.

She had a good time getting the break on the Pole’s second serve, winning 12 of her 17 points, and winning the match’s opening set.

Swiatek left the court in the middle of the first set and resurrended in full force, breaking once more but this time with a hold.

Anisimova might have forgiven her for thinking about Wimbledon in the future, but she kept her cool and saved the break two games later.

As Swiatek desperately looked to her coaching box for guidance after breaking in the eighth game to give herself the chance to play for the match.
