After being chosen to host the centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games in 2030, the Indian city of Amdavad has pledged to “lay the foundation for the next 100 years” amid a riot of color and noise in Glasgow.
The city in the west of the world’s most populous nation was chosen on Wednesday after the city’s mayor last month suggested Abuja in Nigeria over the city’s governing body’s evaluation committee.
In doing so, it was revealed that 15-17 sports will compete in the second Games to be held in India, up from the 10 scheduled for Glasgow’s reimagined event next summer, but less than the 19 that will be held in Birmingham in 2022.
The rest of the program will be finalized in December with the completion of athletics, swimming, table tennis, bowling, weightlifting, and their para-sport equivalents.
The sports included are badminton, badminton, beach volleyball, 3×3 basketball, T20 cricket, cycling, diving, hockey, judo, rhythmic gymnastics, rugby sevens, shooting, squash, triathlon, and wrestling.

How will Amdavad appear?
20 Garba dancers and 30 Indian dhol drummers sprang into the hall shortly after Ahmedabad, which is officially known as Ahmedabad and is located in the state of Gujarat, was chosen unanimously to host the city at the central Glasgow hotel.
Following a thorough presentation from the Indian delegation, they gave an in-depth overview of their ambitious plans for the second Games to take place in India after Delhi in 2010.
The initiative is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal of making India a developed nation by 2047, which also coincides with the country’s 100th anniversary.
In light of this, Amdavad sees the Commonwealth Games as a prelude to a 2036 Olympic and Paralympics-related journey that they hope will include. They have already built out their facilities and infrastructure.
The largest stadium in the world, with a capacity of 132, 000, is one of them, which hosted the Cricket World Cup final in 2023 and will host the opening and closing ceremonies.
Dr. Dr. Dr. Usha, president of the Indian Commonwealth Games Association, stated to delegates that India would “advance the future” of the event by hosting a “strong, inclusive, future-ready Commonwealth Games.”
She stated that she would provide a “transformative edition remembered as a launchpad for the Commonwealth in the next century” and that the Games would be strong on sustainability, technological innovation, and athlete experience.
What brought us here?
The largest city in Scotland, which had stepped in late last year after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew for financial reasons, was feared that the Games in Glasgow next summer might be the last of its kind.
After Durban, South Africa, pulled out, Birmingham took on the 2022 event.
However, a redesigned format, which has fewer sports, athletes, and locations, has enticed India, Nigeria, and a few other nations to make their pitches to welcome the 74 Commonwealth Sporting countries and territories.
In the end, Amdavad triumphed over the odds and has pledged to restore some of the sports that will be unavailable next summer and improve Glasgow’s efforts to make the Games more future-fit.
It marks “the beginning of a new golden era,” according to Dr. Donald Rukare, president of Commonwealth Sport.
After a “Games reset,” he continued, “We head to Glasgow 2026 in fantastic shape before aiming our sights on Amdavad 2030 for a special Centenary edition.”
India “brings scale, youth, ambition, rich culture, enormous sporting passion and relevance,” and I’m delighted to see strong interest from a range of nations in hosting the 2034 Games and beyond.
