Alt-J have been producing music for almost 20 years and have won numerous awards, but some fans are just beginning to understand the meaning behind their distinctive band name.
Many Alt-J fans are unsure of the meaning behind the band’s name despite the fact that many have long been playing their songs. The indie rockers, which were formed in 2007 and include Gwil Sainsbury, Thom Sonny Green, and Gus Unger-Hamilton, have made waves in the music industry.
Their first album, ‘An Awesome Wave’, scooped up the prestigious 2012 British Mercury Prize, catapulting them into stardom across Europe and the States. Hits like ‘Fitzpleasure’, ‘Deadcrush’, ‘Something Good’, ‘Breezeblocks’, ‘Tessellate’, ‘Taro’, and ‘Interlude II’ have become anthems for many, but the origin of their enigmatic name has left some fans on Reddit utterly gobsmacked upon discovery.
The truth is, Alt-J’s real moniker is the delta symbol ∆, a nod to change in mathematical terms. Mac users can replicate this by hitting Alt-J on their keyboards.
The odd origin of their name was revealed to FMQB by Gus Unger-Hamilton: “Gwil discovered the alt-J shortcut on his computer, which creates the “delta” symbol, and he suggested we use the delta symbol, which is a triangle in Greek alphabet,”
You must really give your band a name that is spoken rather than just written, he continued, “But we chose to pronounce it alt-J because we knew that being played on the radio.”
It was going to be written like a triangle or a delta and then “alt-J.” The band’s logo still serves as a sort of masthead, though.

After realizing that the indie band Alt-J () was named after the command to create a delta sign on a Mac computer, a Reddit user commented, “This day I learned that the band’s name was Alt-J () was named after the command to make a delta sign with a Mac computer.
Another joke about keyboard layouts was made fun of: “On the Danish keyboard layout, they should be called Alt-k. Alt-j creates an arrow, not the delta sign.
One fan said, “I really like Alt-J, and I’m excited for the Leeds-based outfit. I’m so excited for their upcoming album, and I love both of them. Although it’s still early to say, 3WW might be my favorite of theirs (it was Taro and Nara before that).
One of their two pence was added, “I remember when Alt J was first big that they were always getting better than Radiohead, because they started out making a better album than Radiohead did.”
Anyway, I believe they are pretty good, but I’m not really a fan of their debut album, which is fantastic. Although their lead single and their second album bothered me, which is their next album, my expectations are not very high (I’d love to be pleasantly surprised though).
Finally, a third user expressed gush over the band’s first major album, “I love Alt-J!” one of my absolute favorites. My favorite band’s debut album, An Awesome Wave, is a work of art from beginning to end. The stronger songs on This Is All Yours, namely “Nara” and “Interior,” are fantastic, in my opinion, but there is some filler there.
