An entire population has been on the verge of apprehension due to the Israeli bombardment and the nearly two million people who live there have been starving for more than 21 months.
The journalists on the ground have risked their lives and the safety of their families by bringing awareness to these atrocities. They courageously reported on this ongoing genocide. They are now battling it out for their own survival, though.
On July 19, Al Jazeera journalists began posting heartbreaking messages on social media, indicating that their ability to continue was waning.
I haven’t stopped covering for a moment in 21 months, and today I say it out loud… And with unfathomable pain, according to one powerful post from Al Jazeera Arabic channel correspondent in Gaza, Anas al-Shariff. Gaza is dying because I’m starving, trembling, and resisting the fainting that keeps me going at every moment. And it also brings us death.
These brave journalists are frequently overlooked and reduced to being mere informants as they continue to document the horrifying realities of Gaza without being recognized as witnesses to their own stories.
Mostefa Souag, director general of Al Jazeera Media Network, stated in response to the plight of Gaza journalists: “We owe it to the courageous journalists in Gaza to amplify their voices and put an end to the intolerable suffering they are enduring due to forced starvation and targeted killings by Israeli occupation forces.
It is our duty to raise our voices and mobilize all available resources to support our colleagues in this noble profession because both the journalistic community and the world bear an immense responsibility. We run the risk of having no one to tell our stories in the future if we don’t act right away. Our inaction will be remembered as a betrayal of the values that every journalist strives to uphold, he added.
Samer Abudaqa, Hamza Dahdouh, Ismail al-Ghoul, Ahmed al-Louh, and Hossam Shabat have all been killed by Israeli forces since October 2023, along with many of their relatives. These brave journalists and their fellow journalists refuse to accept the threats and pressure tactics being used by the Israeli government to silence them.
The continued genocide, forced starvation, and crimes against humanity committed against the civilian population of Gaza would have been almost completely covered by coverage of these intimidations.
