Adolescence star Erin Doherty revealed her mum berated her for swearing during her Emmy Award speech despite sweeping the board during the coveted award season
After winning a Golden Globe and an Emmy Award for her outstanding role in the captivating Netflix drama Adolescence, Erin Doherty is now starting to get used to rubbing shoulders with Hollywood’s elite. But her Hollywood bubble was soon burst by her mother after the Emmy Awards, bringing her back to earth.
Appearing on the Graham Norton show, Erin, 33, sat alongside a host of high-profile names, including Sir Idris Elba. And it was during her interview with the BBC host, she explained that she faced a telling off by her mum for swearing during her Emmy Award acceptance speech.
Erin, who had just returned to the UK following a whirlwind trip to America, told viewers: “Yeah, we literally flew in, got in on Tuesday and then popped it up on the bookshelf and then watched TV. Yeah, it’s been fun”. The audience broke into laughter with her short explanation.
But it didn’t take long before Graham then asked her about the run-in with her mum. In response, she coyly said: “So basically, obviously, with the time delay we got back after the Emmys, and I like FacetTmed my sister, and my mum just happened to be there, and we were all like cheering”.

The actress who is also famed for her role in the period drama The Crown, added: “But she just butted her head in and was like ‘ can I just say’, she was very serious. ‘ I could have done without then swearing'”. The TV star went on to say: “I was like ‘ what’s going on? ‘ I had the trophy in my hand, I was like ‘ mum this is a thing ‘.And she was like., yeah, great, well done, could have done without the swearing'”.
Feeling remorseful, she told Graham and the audience: “I didn’t mean it, well I didn’t mean to”. And it was at this point Idris asked her what swear word she used while on stage, surrounded by a number of A-list Hollywood stars. Erin recalled: “I think I just called everyone like, f****g stunning or something like that”.
She continued: “I was like Cate Blanchett was right there and I was like she’s f*****g stunning. I had words with my mum and she was like if you get up on stage again you can’t swear and I was like ok, I’ll make you a promise”. Erin became a household name for playing Princess Anne in The Crown.
And while her career has soared thanks to her gripping portrayals, it has been reported that she is also focusing on taking her new relationship to the next level. According to the Daily Mail, the award-winning actress has moved in with her girlfriend Sinead Donnelly, who works as a radiographer for the NHS.
Previously, Erin was living in West Sussex but has now reportedly moved to London in a bid to spend more quality time with her partner. Erin reportedly explained her decision while at the Critics ‘ Choice Awards, where she won Best Actress.
She reportedly told the publication: “As much as I loved getting on the trains and going to see her and spend days in London, I also wanted to wake up next to her”. She added: “I’m such a romantic. People say it’s a cliché lesbian thing to move in straight away. But I just thought, ‘ I really think I should move in’. I just love her”.
The pair were pictured last summer while at Wimbledon. Her admission comes after it was revealed that Erin had split with her ex-girlfriend Sophie Melville. But she credited their relationship as one of her “proudest accomplishments”, while on the How To Fail podcast.
In 2022, she told Porter magazine that Sophie evolved her lifestyle. She said: “I used to sit at home eating a bag of chocolates, and now we have, like, a kale salad”. The couple had first met in 2017 when they appeared alongside each other in Alan Ayckbourn’s play The Divide.
