Serie A reports that Milan AC and Como will no longer play an Italian league game in Australia as a result of the Asian Football Confederation’s football sanctions.
The La Liga match between Villarreal and Barcelona, which would have taken place in Miami, had “reluctantly” been approved by Uefa in October, but that game was also canceled.
The first European league game to be played abroad was scheduled for the top flight of Italy, which was scheduled for February in Perth, Western Australia.
According to the president of Serie A, it was “impossible” for the match to go ahead due to financial risks and late complications.
It has become impossible to play the Milan-Como game in Perth on February 8 due to the AFC’s recent escalation of further and unacceptable requests, according to Ezio Simonelli.
Initial difficulties with the plans came from the AFC, where using Asian match officials was required, but Simonelli had already stated this week that the game would proceed.
Prior to now, Como had advocated for playing games abroad, arguing that “sacrifice is necessary” to ensure “survival” of Serie A given the Premier League’s financial holdout.
Football Supporters Europe (FSE) criticized the plans, claiming that “one domestic match is too many.”
