Abia To Pardon Minor Offenders, Ramps Up Security Ahead Of Yuletide

Dr. Alex Otti, the governor of Abia State, claims that his administration is beginning legal proceedings to identify minor offenders in correctional facilities in order to obtain pardons.

The governor urged residents to remain vigilant and concerned about security throughout the holiday season during the November edition of his monthly media interaction in Umuahia.

Governor Otti stated that the government is still in regular contact with security organizations, including the police, army, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), to improve intelligence gathering and swift response to threats.

He asserts that the government is doing everything to make a secure environment. We regularly speak with the police, army, NSCDC, and other service commanders. The key is intelligence. Don’t be afraid to give information, take charge of your own security, and be safe.

The governor also disclosed that the governor’s administration is closely monitoring the state’s various prisons.

He claimed to have met with the Service’s Zonal Commandant recently and had inspected ongoing support projects, including the construction of perimeter fencing and a one-storey holding facility to ease traffic.

Otti explained that while the Correctional Service is a federal institution, his administration still prioritizes the welfare of the prisoners, who are primarily Abia citizens.

He noted that no minor offenders were identified at the time, despite previous attempts to grant pardons under the prerogative of mercy.

The governor has now instructed the Service to conduct a new review to assess whether any of the inmates he addresses during the end-of-year interventions are eligible for consideration.
