Before Anna Morris defends her individual pursuit title, Great Britain won two gold medals at the Track World Championships, Katie Archibald and Maddie Leech won the women’s madison.
Victoire Berteau and Marion Borras and France’s Archibald, 31, and Leech, 22, both finished ahead of them in the bronze medal race, while Chiara Consonni and Vittoria Guazzini, both from Italy, took the bronze medal with 20 points after a crash put an end to the Netherlands’ challenge.
Two-time Olympic champion Archibald expressed his excitement for the race, which has been running really quickly this week.
“The only thing I’ve been afraid of is how painful it will be,” she said. I was pleased to accept the pain and take home the jersey because everything else has been just a thrill and an opportunity.
There are nine years between us. When the first women’s madison title was proposed, Maddie was only 13 years old.
She’s grown up with this happening, which hasn’t always been, and it’s pretty cool to be her ally on the journey.
In a comfortable final performance in Santiago, Chile, Morris defeated Great Britain team-mate Josie Knight by 2.317 seconds in the pursuit of individual pursuit gold at the previous year’s world championships in Denmark.
Up until Morris’ final race of qualifying, where Knight, 28, secured an all-British final, Knight, 28, was the session’s fastest qualifier.
Morris said, “It’s a new experience warming up with the person you’re going to race against.”
It was nice that we could both go out and leave it all on the track and be extremely happy for each other if either won. “We’ve both trained really hard for this.”
Knight, Morris, and Leech all added to the team pursuit team’s bronze status.
