Michael Carrick described Old Trafford as “a magical place” ahead of the opening game of his second spell as Manchester United’s head coach.

Few people had anticipated his ability to create such a potent performance against Manchester City. Pep Guardiola acknowledged that Diogo Dalot’s dismissal in the opening minutes would have prevented his team from losing.

With a 2-0 victory, Carrick has now added Guardiola’s name to the list of United head coaches Unai Emery and Mikel Arteta have also been defeated by him. Additionally, he has drawn against a Thomas Tuchel-led Chelsea side.

As he left the pitch, Carrick could only conceive the song that United fans had written for him when he first started playing for the team in 2006, which was a day that couldn’t possibly go any better.

He grinned and said, “It’s a great start, there’s no getting away from that.”

Carrick, it is obvious, is not Ruben Amorim. Just as he doesn’t deliver soundbites that make headlines, it is not his style. He does not flash back in the same way as his Portuguese counterpart and occasionally chuckle during media interviews. Additionally, he has been playing professionally long enough to avoid becoming too enthralled by the outcome of one famous game.

He said that the secret to success is consistency. You have a winner, if you can find it.

We won’t play games with the feelings and emotions that today brought. That is all we are aware of.

“But we must undoubtedly live up to a standard and expectation. That’s the challenge we face.

Even though it has been more than ten years since Carrick played for United, he and his family have remained season ticket holders.

He has covered the games of his old side on TV and appeared as a pundit this season.

He had a plan in his head about how to get the most out of these players, but he had no idea how he would do it. He also had no idea how to beat his former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and get the job of managing United until the end of the season.

The three backs of Amorim were not involved. Kobbie Mainoo, the most glaring victim of Amorim’s rigid approach, was the subject of it, which even United’s executives eventually came to understand was preventing consistency for the club.

Carrick claimed that he has watched a lot. My family and I have family members who have season tickets, according to the statement. You become acquainted with the players and their particular eye.

Everyone has a point, and your instincts are your own. It’s obvious that it kicks when you think I might be on my toes to take action.

Amorim never really gave the impression he was trustworthy in a midfield pairing, but Mainoo’s industry helped him out with veteran Brazilian Casemiro.

“Cobbie was fantastic alongside Casa,” Carrick remarked. It provided a foundation between the two of them.

Harry Maguire’s performance, which was his first game since November 8, helped central-defensive partner Lisandro Martinez rule Erling Haaland to the point where City’s xG of 0.45 was their second-lowest in 364 Premier League games under Guardiola.

It was a big ask of “H,” Carrick remarked. “Thank you, H,”

What players do, in our opinion, is something we could take for granted occasionally. It was a bit of a calculated gamble given how long he could play because he literally trained for two or three days over the past eight or nine weeks.

Gary Neville and Roy Keane, former skippers who have fueled the suspicion and criticism surrounding his appointment in recent days, are also giving Carrick praise.

Neville on Sky Sports claimed that “Michael Carrick is in heaven.” Manchester City “can’t believe it,” he said. Gianluigi Donnarumma, Rodri, Haaland, and the most famous player, Pep Guardiola, are all shaken heads and stunned. They have been “run ragged”

Keane continued, “It has been a fantastic afternoon for United.” It’s not as though they were lucky, they claim.

Wayne Rooney, the ex-Manchester United striker, stated to BBC Sport: “The fans have been dehydrated over the past few years. Although it’s just one performance, I believe everyone will be able to identify how exciting that team can be.

Everybody talks about the United DNA, especially as former players, and that has just been demonstrated by what it is. Work-rate off the ball, helping out the full-backs, and wingers getting back-filling in.

Donnarumma saved four excellent saves, and United twice hit the woodwork. Three offside goals were allowed. After being initially stopped by Amad Diallo, his reflexed effort in the second half to deny Casemiro left the Brazilian biting his shirt in disbelief.

This week, there has been a lot of discussion about the summer managers United should be attempting to land and Carrick should be used solely as a stop-gap.

However, those who hold these views disregard the ferocity of the emotions produced by the outcomes and performances.

For the first time in what seems like a very long time, Old Trafford echoed the cheers of fans who had praised a team’s efforts and execution of a game plan that, in the context of this 40-game season, was sufficient to secure a victory in a crucial match.

“The players certainly fed off it,” Carrick remarked. They left the changing area because they were so desperate to succeed.

Because being emotionally invested in something, I was almost told, “Don’t be too desperate” because it can impair your judgment and lead to decisions. But they struck the right balance, and they had such amazing supporters.

This place can be magical, I said yesterday. It has some funny moments, which is exactly what we needed.

How did Man Utd win?

United was outstanding throughout the entire game. Although they limited City to 0.45 xG throughout the game due to their 32% possession, they spent a lot of time defending.

Their 4-4-2 compact shape was flawlessly executed with excellent co-ordination and intensity right out of the gate. Amad and Dorgu, two wingers, excelled in their roles. Rico Lewis was effectively destroyed by Dorgu’s man-marking as he moved into central attacking positions, and Amad frequently joined the defensive line to form a back five, effectively marshalling Jeremy Doku.

United’s 4-4-2 pushed City into wide areas, where they defended with four players, when they had the ball. It was challenging for City to find the space to create anything of note because the striker, central midfielder, winger, and full-back were all coming across.

United used their speed and directness to attack in a way that was true to their tradition.
