US Open 2025
Dates: August 24 through September 7 in Flushing Meadows, New York
Emma Raducanu, a British competitor, successfully defeated Indonesian qualifier Janice Tjen to advance to the US Open third round.
In exactly 60 minutes, Raducanu won 6-2 6-1, thanks to strong serving and consistently deep groundstrokes.
The 2021 US Open champion’s only real concern came in the second set when she appeared to be bothered by a back niggle.
The 34th-ranked Raducanu, who could next face ex-WWII champion Elena Rybakina, said, “I’m very pleased with how I played.”
Tjen’s debut Tour-level victory over Veronika Kudermetova showed she had the ability to cause issues, even though she might have been competing in her first competition.
The 23-year-old only became a professional last year after earning her sociology degree at a university in the United States, but she has gained media attention with her 13 ITF World Tennis Tour victories.
Although Tjen’s style resembles that of the crafty former world number one Ashleigh Barty, Raducanu refused to let her rival find her stride.
Under new coach Francisco Roig, Raducanu is working to further develop her serve as a weapon, which was very successful against 149th-ranked Tjen.
She won 76% of her first serves, hit eight aces, and hit 79%, giving Tjen a lead at the start of the point.
Tjen was prevented from using her slice and variety by Raducanu’s power from the baseline as she continued to push her further into the court.
Although more difficult tests are still to come, especially if she faces Rybakina in the third round, Raducanu’s impressive performance continues onward.
