Cillian Murphy did not make his acting debut in 28 Weeks Later (2007), but Sony executives have since made hints that the Oscar-winning actor will be back for the third installment of the franchise, “surprisingly and in a way that grows.”

Meanwhile, the 2007 Juan Carlos Fresnadillo-directed sequel, 28 Weeks Later, featuring Jeremy Renner, Robert Carlyle, and Rose Byrne, can be viewed with a subscription on Netflix and Disney+ and is also available to rent on Amazon Prime Video in the UK for £3.49.

On June 20, the eagerly awaited third movie in the franchise, 28 Years Later, will be released in theaters. After almost 23 years, director Danny Boyle will make his film debut in the apocalyptic horror universe.

28 Years Later, starring Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes, is set in 2030, which is 28 years after the British zombie apocalypse of 2002. While neighboring European countries are observing the shores of the UK, a Geordie family lives on an island off the north coast of England, while Great Britain is still in permanent quarantine.

The film’s official synopsis reads, “Some people have found ways to exist among the infected. It has been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory.” A small island, which is connected to the mainland by a single, heavily guarded causeway, is home to one of these groups of survivors.

One of the group departs from the island on a mission into the darkest part of the mainland, where he discovers secrets, wonders, and horrors that have altered both the infected and other survivors as well.

Alex Garland, a writer for 28 Years Later, finally confirmed that the third installment’s development was influenced by recent political events. Fans of the franchise initially doubted the impact of the global Coronavirus pandemic on 28 Years Later, but Alex, who directed Ex Machina and Civil War, refuted any association between the upcoming zombie horror movie and the global lockdowns.

Instead, the Academy Award-nominee was reportedly inspired by Brexit, and claims much of 28 Years Later has been inspired by Britain’s decision to leave the EU back in 2016.
