Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025: Scotland v Wales

Venue: Salford Community Stadium Date: Saturday 23 August Kick-off: 14:45 BST

Co-captain Alex Callender is included in Wales’ Rugby World Cup squad despite suffering a concerning ankle injury earlier this month.

The star back row limped off just four minutes into the second Test against Australia on 1 August before returning to the sideline in a boot and on crutches.

Head coach Sean Lynn has included all 30 players he took on the summer tour, along with experienced centre Kerin Lake and uncapped Wales Under-20 captain Branwen Metcalfe.

Wales’ also face the world’s second best team Canada at the same venue on 30 August, before a reunion with former head coach Ioan Cunningham, who is now in charge of Fiji, in Exeter.

Metcalfe, 18, is the younger sister of full-back Nel Metcalfe and one of two pairs of sisters, along with prop Gwenllian Pyrs and lock Alaw Pyrs, to be selected in the squad.

Wales hooker Carys Phillips is set to play in her fourth World Cup, while it will be a third outing for Hannah Jones, Jasmine Joyce-Butchers, Lleucu George, Kelsey Jones, Keira Bevan and Gwenllian Pyrs.

It will be a first major tournament experience for Seren Lockwood, Katherine Baverstock and Tilly Vucaj, who all won their first caps in Australia.

Carys Cox, Courtney Keight, Alaw Pyrs, Maisie Davies, Molly Reardon, Nel Metcalfe, Jenni Scoble, Catherine Richards, Bryonie King and Meg Davies will also make their World Cup debuts.

“The Wales squad selected is a mix of experience and exciting young talent that have all proved they deserve the opportunity to play on the biggest stage of a World Cup,” said Lynn, who celebrated his first win in the opening Australia Test since taking charge in March.

“As coaches, there were some tough calls on selection but this is the strongest squad we could have selected and we are looking forward to the challenge ahead of us.

Inside Catherine Zeta Jones’ Hollywood marriage to Wall Street icon Michael Douglas

Catherine Zeta Jones returned to Netflix’s Wednesday for season two as the morbid teenager’s mum.

Morticia Addams has a fiery marriage to Gomez Addams on Wednesday, leading many Netflix subscribers to think about her real-life romance with acting legend Michael Douglas.

Jenna Ortega is back as the unforgettably dark Wednesday Addams for season two of Wednesday which dropped on Netflix last week.

As Wednesday returns to Nevermore Academy, her mum Morticia Addams (Catherine Zeta Jones) has a mission of her own as she heads up the school’s upcoming charity gala.

When she isn’t fundraising or looking out for her troublesome daughter, Morticia is spending quality time with her husband Gomez Addams (Luis Guzman).

As fans now wait for Wednesday season two, part two, to come out, here’s everything there is to know about actress Zeta Jones’ real-life marriage to Michael Douglas.

Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas’ relationship timeline

Meeting

Douglas first met with Zeta Jones, who is 25 years his junior, at the 1998 Deauville Film Festival where she was promoting The Mask of Zorro and he, A Perfect Murder.

In 2016 on The Jonathan Ross Show, he shared that he asked his publicist to arrange a meeting between the two of them that evening.

He commented: “I met her in the bar and was a total gentleman.” Douglas recalled telling her: “You know, I’m going to be the father of your children.”

Engagement

The Basic Instinct star popped the question during a New Year ’s Eve trip to Aspen, Colorado in 1999.

First child

Rumours had been circling that Zeta Jones was pregnant which was eventually confirmed by Douglas.

He told People: “We obviously were hoping to hang onto this information a little longer than expected but, yep, Catherine’s expecting, and both of us couldn’t be happier.”

It was then on August 8 that they welcomed their first child Dylan Douglas with the actor’s publicist stating: “They’re ecstatic.”

Wedding

A few months later and the stars tied the knot at a stunning ceremony at the Plaza Hotel in New York in November, 2000.

Zeta Jones wore a David Emanuel dress and a plethora of famous faces were in attendance like Whoopi Goldberg, Anthony Hopkins, Brad Pitt and Tom Hanks.

Second child

The Wednesday star didn’t find out she was pregnant with her second child until towards the end of filming Intolerable Cruelty.

She shared: “The day after, I went to my doctor. I came home and told Michael. He let out a whoop.

“I never wanted Dylan to be an only child. Because of my amazing relationship with my siblings, I couldn’t see him being the Little Lord Dylan on his own.”

The couple welcomed their daughter Carys Zeta Douglas on Easter Sunday in 2003.

Cancer ordeal

In September 2010, Douglas was diagnosed with throat cancer and was undergoing radiation and chemotherapy to treat a tumour at the base of his tongue.

Zeta Jones commented: “The hardest part is seeing his fatigue, because Michael is never tired. If there’s anything Michael has, it’s strength.”

Thankfully, in January 2011, he revealed on Today that he got the all-clear: “I feel good, relieved. The tumor is gone. But, you know, I have to check out on a monthly basis now to maintain.”

Following his final cancer treatment, the celebrity couple took their children on a trip to Walt Disney World in Florida for Thanksgiving.

Douglas said: “There’s a much deeper feeling. And I’ve talked to other cancer survivors about this, that — that happens, that you just really, really appreciate what’s important in life.”

Break-up

Much to Hollywood’s shock, Douglas and Zeta Jones did separate in August 2013, with a source telling People that the stress of his cancer battle and her struggles with bipolar II disorder had taken its toll.

However, later that year, Douglas positively updated People: “We’re working things out, talking, and we’ll see how she goes.”

This wasn’t the end of their marriage with the famous couple reuniting once again and proving happier than ever.

Opening up on The Ellen DeGeneres Show two years later, Douglas said: “It can’t be a one-way street. But I’m crazy about her. And yeah, I think every couple has their difficult times.

“The only problem is, as you well know, we’re all in the public eye, and it tends to get a little more exposed than most. We’re back stronger than ever.”

Loved-up

Twenty-five years after getting married, Douglas and Zeta-Jones have remained one of the most stable couples in the world of entertainment.

And going from her Valentine’s Day post last year, romance is still very much part of their lives.

Sharing a cute black and white photo of them, she penned: “Happy Valentines Day to my love Michael. Sealed with a kiss.”

In a separate post, Douglas wrote: “Happy Valentine’s Day to my darling Catherine! Love you always and forever.”

Palace lose appeal against demotion from Europa League

Crystal Palace have lost their appeal against being demoted from the Europa League and will play in the Conference League this season.

The ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) also means Nottingham Forest’s spot in the Europa League is confirmed, having been promoted in Palace’s place.

The news comes just a day after Palace beat Liverpool on penalties to win the Community Shield at Wembley.

The Eagles qualified for the Europa League after winning the FA Cup last season but were punished by Uefa for breaching multi-club ownership rules.

American businessman John Textor owned a 43% stake in the club until he sold it in June and is the majority owner of Lyon, who have also qualified for the Europa League.

Palace had until 1 March 2025 to show Uefa proof of multi-club ownership restructuring, but the club missed that deadline.

In July, Palace submitted an appeal to Cas against Uefa – which issued the punishment – as well as Lyon and Nottingham Forest.

In the ruling, Cas said:

Uefa rules state clubs owned, to a certain threshold of influence, by the same person or entity cannot compete in the same European tournament.

Palace argued Textor does not hold any decisive influence at the club, but Uefa did not accept the Premier League side’s defence.

How did we get here?

17 May – Palace beat Manchester City in FA Cup final to secure place in Europa League

10 June – Forest express concerns over Palace’s Europa League place and ask Uefa for clarity

23 June – Textor sells 43% stake in Palace to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson

30 June – Textor resigns from leadership position on board at Lyon

11 July – Uefa rule Palace should be demoted to Conference League

22 July – Palace submit appeal to Cas against demotion from Europa League

How did Forest avoid sanction?

Uefa regulations around multi-club ownership and European competitions are in place to prevent collusion.

In the governing body’s rulebook, a club is required to prove they are not “simultaneously involved in any capacity whatsoever in the management, administration, and/or sporting performance of more than one club participating in a Uefa club competition”.

Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis, who also controls Greek side Olympiakos, avoided regulations around multi-club ownership by diluting his control of the Premier League side.

‘Fuming’ Prince Harry plots next move with ‘all options on table’ as bitter Sentebale row deepens

Prince Harry quit as patron of Sentebale, a charity he co-founded in 2006, following a bitter boardroom battle – and now it seems he is plotting his next move amid the fallout

Prince Harry is considering starting a brand new humanitarian charity as the war of words over him quitting Sentebale rumbles on.

A messy and very public boardroom battle saw the Duke of Sussex quit as patron of Sentebale in March in support of trustees who resigned in opposition to board chairwoman Dr Sophie Chandauka, who previously levelled accusations of bullying and harassment against the royal.

The charity works in Botswana and Lesotho, supporting the health and well-being of young people, especially those with HIV and Aids. Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, who co-founded Sentebale alongside the duke in honour of Diana, Princess of Wales, in 2006, also stepped down as patron. It comes after the news Harry is ‘wounded’ over the bitter rift and horrified as ‘wrists slapped’.

The Charity Commission published a report into the episode last week, criticising all sides for making the fallout public with interviews and statements, but the war of words has continued.

A source said that the row had been “emotionally absolutely devastating” for Harry, and described Dr Chandauka’s comments as “nothing short of a hostile takeover”.

And now a spokesperson for Harry said: “The duke remains absolutely committed to continuing the work he started, supporting the children and young people of Lesotho and Botswana, nearly 20 years ago. In what form that support takes — no decisions have been made.

“All options remain on the table, whether that be starting a new charity or working to support pre-existing charities operating in the same sector in the region.”

The charity regulator, which cannot investigate individual allegations of bullying, said it found no evidence of systemic bullying or harassment, including misogyny or misogynoir at the charity, but acknowledged “the strong perception of ill treatment” felt by some involved.

According to the Mail on Sunday, Harry has now issued a formal complaint about Dr Chandauka’s conduct, saying they have “directly impacted” his other charity work.

Meanwhile, the former trustees who resigned at the same time as Harry said in a statement they were “gravely concerned for the future of the charity” as they felt the commission had “chosen to ignore key concerns and irrefutable evidence raised with them regarding the leadership and oversight of Sentebale’s chair”.

In response to the findings, Sentebale said in a statement: “The Charity Commission is explicitly clear, including in its public guidance, that it is not the commission’s responsibility to adjudicate or mediate internal disputes. This would include individual allegations of bullying, harassment, misogyny, misogynoir etc.

“As a result, the commission has not investigated any individual allegations and therefore has not made any findings about individuals, including Prince Harry. The issues not investigated by the commission can and may be dealt with through avenues more appropriate than the commission.”

It comes as former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond told the Mirror that Harry is “clearly fuming” by the fallout.

She explained: “I think Harry is now even more disillusioned by the ‘establishment’ – and that includes most official channels. He is reported to believe the Charity Commission is not fit for purpose, and so any future ventures are unlikely to be under its jurisdiction.

“Sentebale was a passion for Harry and one that was closely associated with his mother, who campaigned so hard to make the world understand more about AIDS and HIV.

“When you saw him with the children, he seemed so invested in helping them, so compassionate and so full of fun as he played games with them and made them feel their world was a better place.

“He has said himself that he is devastated by the way things have turned out. It was interesting that in his resignation from the charity earlier this year, he and his co-founder, Prince Seeiso, said their decision was ‘until further notice’.

Article continues below

“I think Harry believed the charity commission would come down firmly on his side and oust the chair, Dr Sophie Chandauka, from her position, allowing him to return as patron. Now, however, he sees the report as enabling what he calls ‘a hostile takeover’.

“Critically, the report cleared the Prince of the damaging allegations of bullying, misogyny, and misogynoir. But it was highly critical of the way Harry, and indeed Dr Chandauka, waged an angry war of words in public. Neither side has come out of this well, and both have had their wrists well and truly slapped by the commission.”

Japan boxing to hold emergency meeting following fighters’ deaths

Japanese boxing officials will hold an emergency meeting on Tuesday as the sport in the country faces intense scrutiny following the deaths of two fighters in separate bouts at the same event.

Super featherweight Shigetoshi Kotari and lightweight Hiromasa Urakawa, both 28, fought on the same card at Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall on August 2 and died days later following brain surgery.

The Japan Boxing Commission (JBC), gym owners and other boxing officials are under pressure to act and will hold an emergency meeting on Tuesday.

They are also expected to have talks about safety next month, local media said.

“We are acutely aware of our responsibility as the manager of the sport,” Tsuyoshi Yasukochi, secretary-general of the JBC, told reporters on Sunday.

“We will take whatever measures we can.”

Japanese media highlighted the risks of fighters dehydrating to lose weight rapidly before weigh-ins.

“Dehydration makes the brain more susceptible to bleeding,” the Asahi Shimbun newspaper said.

That is one of the issues the JBC plans to discuss with trainers.

“They want to hear from gym officials who work closely with the athletes about such items as weight loss methods and pre-bout conditioning, which may be causally related (to deaths),” the Nikkan Sports newspaper said.

In one immediate measure, the commission has decided to reduce all Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation title bouts to 10 rounds from 12.

“The offensive power of Japanese boxing today is tremendous,” Yasukochi was quoted by the Asahi Shimbun as telling reporters.
