Uber to invest in $300m in EV maker Lucid amid robotaxi deal

Uber will invest $300m in electric vehicle maker Lucid in a robotaxi deal that aims to start with one major US city late next year.

The two companies announced the new partnership on Thursday.

Over six years starting in 2026, Uber will acquire and deploy over 20,000 Lucid Gravity SUVs that will be equipped with autonomous vehicle (AV) technology from startup Nuro, the three companies said in a statement.

The agreement illustrates the renewed plans and push for financing for self-driving cabs, years after a first wave of autonomous driving investment produced only a limited number of vehicles. Tesla has recently launched a robotaxi trial in Austin, and Alphabet’s driverless taxi unit, Waymo, is speeding up its expansion.

As part of their announced deal, Uber will invest hundreds of millions of dollars in Lucid and Nuro, which supply self-driving technology to carmakers, the joint statement said. Of that, $300m will go to Lucid, the EV maker said in a separate filing to the US Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday.

Lucid shares surged about 39 percent as of 11:15am in New York (15:15 GMT). They had fallen about 24 percent this year.

Uber’s latest move underscores its renewed push into the robotaxi space after exiting in 2020. Since then, Uber has pivoted to partnerships with several technology developers, including Waymo and Aurora.

The deal with Lucid follows Uber’s robotaxi agreement in April with Volkswagen, which will supply its ID.Buzz vans for commercial service, planned for Los Angeles next year.

But commercialising AV tech has been much harder than anticipated, with high costs, tight regulations and federal investigations forcing many, including General Motors’ Cruise, to shut down.

Some still in the race include Amazon.com’s Zoox, which is testing a robotaxi without manual controls and plans to launch commercial services in Las Vegas this year.

After years of missed deadlines and unmet promises, Tesla started a restricted trial with about a dozen of its Model Y SUVs in Austin, Texas, last month. CEO Elon Musk has said it will expand the service rapidly to other US cities this year.

Waymo has been growing cautiously for years and operates in several US cities with about 1,500 vehicles. It crossed 100 million miles of autonomous driving this month.

A prototype of the Lucid-Nuro robotaxi is already operating autonomously on a closed circuit at Nuro’s testing facility in Las Vegas, the companies said.

“We are expanding beyond our traditional EV technology leadership and working on partnerships and going now into areas that in the past we have not really focused on,” Lucid’s interim CEO Marc Winterhoff told the Reuters news agency.

Nuro, cofounded and led by former Waymo engineers, has expanded from making last-mile delivery vehicles to providing its self-driving technology for commercial and passenger vehicles.

“We have other very active conversations going on the personal vehicle side … where we would integrate Nuro driver into vehicles that will get sold to end consumers,” Dave Ferguson, Nuro’s cofounder and president, said.

Nuro will still need to apply for state-level operating licences, though it holds some licences from its previous delivery operations, he said.

Separately, Lucid said it had proposed a one-for-10 reverse stock split of its class A common stock.

Dominant Pogacar wins on summit finish to regain Tour lead

Tadej Pogacar regained the overall lead of the Tour de France as he stormed up the Hautacam climb to win stage 12.

Jonas Vingegaard’s Visma-Lease a Bike team were expected to attack the reigning champion on the first true mountain stage of this year’s Tour, which ended with the first summit finish.

Pogacar was also sporting dressings on his left arm after falling at the end of Wednesday’s stage, but the Slovenian showed no ill effects as he attacked on the gruelling final climb.

The three-time winner went clear early on the 13.5km ascent and continued to stretch his lead, winning the stage by two minutes 10 seconds from Vingegaard.

That meant he reclaimed the yellow jersey from Ben Healy and more than doubled his time advantage over Vingegaard, his main rival for the general classification, who is now 3 mins 31 secs behind.

It was on this climb that Vingegaard struck the decisive blow on the 2022 Tour, taking a minute out of Pogacar as the Dane won stage 18 en route to clinching his first Tour title.

“I was trying with my head through the wall to get back the yellow jersey [in 2022] but Visma was too strong back then,” said Pogacar.

“I almost forgot about that. I was just looking forward to today, then all the people, all the time were, coming to me saying ‘oh yeah, this is the revenge time’, blah blah blah.

“Then when we approached the bottom of the climb it was the reverse story of a few years ago. One Belgian guy again on the front, Tim [Wellens], and our team. I’m super happy to take time [out of Vingegaard] and win on this climb.”

NFF Mourns Demise Of Football ‘Professor’ Monday Sinclair

Former Nigerian international player and former Super Eagles coach, Monday Sinclair, passed away in a profound manner, according to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). His passing is a significant blow to the country’s football community.

Sinclair, who was well-known for his mastery of the game, passed away on Wednesday evening, leaving behind a legacy that affected grassroots and elite football development in Nigeria.

NFF General Secretary, Mohammed Sanusi, expressed his condolences on Thursday in a message on his behalf: “We mourn deeply with the immediate family, friends, and relatives of ‘Professor’ Monday Sinclair’s demise. Another depressing day for Nigerian football.

Our prayer is that God will stop the sorrow and grief that plague our sport and society as a whole. We pray that the Almighty will grant the late Sinclair rest and the strength to bear the heavy loss that he has left behind, including the coaching fraternity.

After gaining independence, Sinclair spent a few years playing for the senior national team of Nigeria before transitioning to coaching, where he became famous for nurturing young talent and promoting an exciting, fluid style of football.

In addition to the late goalkeeper Peter Rufai, the defensive linebacker Taribo West, and the striker Finidi George, his influence had a significant impact on the development of several former Super Eagles stars.

Following the departure of Frenchman Philippe Troussier after Nigeria received a World Cup qualification in 1998, Sinclair was appointed interim head coach of the Super Eagles.

In addition to his distinctive teaching methods, charisma, and dedication to the game, Sinclair also coached a number of Nigerian clubs, most notably the Sharks of Port Harcourt.

‘I tried Emma Stone’s hooded eye make-up trick that has fans saying she’s had a facelift’

Fans have been questioning whether Emma Stone has undergone surgery or whether it’s just clever make-up because the Oscar-winning actor has been sporting a brand-new look recently.

Emma Stone’s striking new look has received a lot of attention on social media recently. The La La Land actress chopped her auburn hair into a pixie cut earlier this year, which is now extending into a slightly longer, tousled ‘do’. But it’s not just this that’s getting people talking.

Some people speculated that the 36-year-old’s face also looks different, with her eye area slightly raised, her eyes slightly raised, and she may have had cosmetic or surgical procedures like an eyelid surgery or brow lift.

I’ve tried one of her make-up techniques on my own hooded eyes, so maybe she had it, or maybe it’s just a few clever make-up tricks…

This multitasking linen dress is the only one I had on vacation, and it’s on sale.

This $ 8.99 offer saved me $ 80 on all of my handbag beauty necessities, including a luxe perfume.

According to my analysis of some recent red carpet photos of Emma’s make-up, the main change has been with her eyeliner application technique (or rather, her make-up artist’s). She used to wear a very thick line of eyeliner that would typically extend from the very center of her eyes outwards, but now she appears to prefer a very thin line of liquid eyeliner that doesn’t extend far enough and ends in a subtle flick. This allows the eye to elongate completely without taking up too much lid space.

For its super-smooth nib and blacker-than-black pigment, Dior Diorshow Liquid Liner, £35, is a good high-street alternative. To replicate this appearance, you need a very fluid, very smooth black liquid felt tip-style liner that won’t drag or skip on the lid.

Then draw the thinnest line you can, as close to the lashes as you can, drawing the thinnest line possible starting at the innermost corner, ending with a tiny lift at the outermost corner. Press the liner directly into the hairs to make it appear like it’s part of the eyelashes. You can also do dots between or underneath the lash line with your pen.

My eyes looked drastically changed as a result, in my opinion. Although I typically only use liquid eyeliners to the outer half, I don’t usually use liquid ones, but this method has really improved and lengthened my eye shape. Add to this a brow that has been brushed more straight than arched, and voila! I have a new favorite make-up method for me.

There’s been much talk on social media in recent months about Emma Stone’s striking new look. Earlier this year the La La Land actor chopped her auburn hair into a pixie cut, which is now growing out into a slightly longer, tousled ‘do – but it’s not just this that’s got people talking.

Some have suggested that the 36-year-old’s face looks different too, in particular her eye area – brows slightly more raised, eyes a little less hooded – speculating she may have undergone cosmetic or surgical procedures such as an expertly done upper blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) or a brow lift.

Perhaps she had, or perhaps it’s just a couple of clever make-up tricks – and I’ve tried one of them out on my own hooded eyes…

From studying some recent red carpet photos of Emma’s make-up, I think the biggest change has been with her (or rather, her make-up artist’s) eyeliner technique. Whereas previously she would often wear quite a thick liner, starting from the middle of her eye outwards, she now seems to be favouring a very very thin line of liquid eyeliner that instead reaches right from the very inner corner of her eyes and ends in a subtle flick. This has the effect of elongating the whole eye without taking up much lid space.

To copy this look, you need a very fluid, very smooth black liquid felt tip-style liner, one that won’t drag or skip on the lid; I love Dior Diorshow Liquid Liner, £35, for its blacker-than-black pigment and super-smooth nib (L’Oréal Paris Superliner Perfect Slim Eyeliner, £7.99, is a good high-street alternative).

Then, starting from the innermost corner, draw the thinnest line you possibly can, as near to the lashes as you can, ending with a very tiny lift at the outer end. The trick is to make the liner look like part of the eyelashes, so really press it into the hairs. You can also use your pen to dot between or underneath the lash line.

I think this had a huge impact on how my eyes looked. I don’t normally use liquid eyeliner and would typically keep any eyeliner to the outer half only, but this technique really lifted and lengthened my eye shape. Add to this a brow that’s brushed more straight than arched, and I think you’ve got what could pass for an instant eye lift – and a new favourite make-up technique for me.

Liverpool close on Ekitike, Isak to stay – what has gone on this week?

Images courtesy of Getty

Hugo Ekitike and Hugo Ekitike are both expected to leave Liverpool, and Newcastle appear to be keeping hold of Alexander Isak.

However, as Liverpool began to pursue Isak and Newcastle made a £70 million offer for Ekitike earlier this week, things started to look a little different.

This story has moved quickly even in the tense world of football transfers.

Slot is not slow moving.

At the end of last season, Liverpool made the move for Ekitike as the starting point.

They had just won their second Premier League title, totaling 86 goals, which is the most of any top-flight team that season.

Their main goalie, Mohamed Salah, had just completed a new contract.

Therefore, investing a lot in a new goalscorer seemed foolish. Arne Slot, however, had other ideas.

The addition of a new number nine was one of Liverpool’s top hiring priorities.

It is obvious that the Liverpool manager wanted an upgrade, despite the fact that Slot had persisted with Darwin Nunez for some time throughout the season.

This summer, Nunez has the potential to leave Anfield, with Napoli and Saudi Arabia interested.

Isak, a Newcastle striker who was also interesting to Arsenal, was Liverpool’s ideal target.

Liverpool knew they needed to find alternatives because of Eddie Howe’s significance and potential asking prices of upwards of £130 million.

Other strikers included Brentford’s Yoane Wissa, RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, and Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins.

Their admiration for Isak is now as high as their interest in Ekiti.

Throughout the summer, there has been rife talk of Liverpool’s interest in Isak in business circles. What many people had anticipated was coming was confirmed by Liverpool’s emergence this week in the Newcastle game.

In retrospect, that approach was made available at a peculiar time.

Following Eintracht’s rejection of a £70 million offer earlier this week, Newcastle were attempting to advance with their interest in Ekitike.

Is Isak Interest a “smokescreen”?

Liverpool’s interest in Isak was entirely genuine, or rather, it is. Newcastle have maintained that their Swedish international is not for sale, at least in the eyes of the public.

However, Liverpool’s recent efforts to land Isak suggest they have received some private encouragement in the form of contraindications.

You can anticipate Liverpool’s interest in Isak to continue even if their decision to concentrate on Ekiti is realized.

As things stand, the former Real Sociedad forward will leave Newcastle for their final two years of his contract in the summer, when things are in much worse shape.

Of course, Liverpool may think they don’t need another centre-forward when they enter the transfer window next summer, with or without Ekitike.

However, it’s unlikely that Isak will be too far from their thoughts if they do.

With Gyokeres set to leave for Arsenal in the future, Newcastle can rest assured that the wolves will remain out of their path for at least this window.

Isak’s merits are obvious from a performance standpoint because the 25-year-old is establishing himself as one of Europe’s elite center forwards.

Newcastle are also aware of the pros and cons of selling Isak, especially given their repeated claim that he is not for sale.

Why did Liverpool make the decision to buy Ekiti?

You can assume that Liverpool will consider their decision to leave a £20 million deal to sign the 23-year-old striker three years ago before switching to Isak from Real Sociedad if they do so at Newcastle’s expense.

His value has skyrocketed as a result of Ekitike’s rise as one of the continent’s top young strikers. His asking price is a major factor in Newcastle’s recent failure to sign the French striker.

The rise of Ekitike has also brought in the top clubs from Europe.

It’s difficult to ignore Liverpool when they knock. The Merseysiders made the switch in a deal worth more than £70 million after scoring 26 goals in 47 appearances for Frankfurt.

While Newcastle’s waiting for a new striker moves on, Liverpool’s sporting director Richard Hughes wants to close the deal with Ekitike by the weekend.

Although they are interested in Wissa, it will be interesting to see how Bryan Mbeumo’s potential move to St James’ Park might be impacted by Manchester United’s most recent bid for Brentford team-mate.

Given the upheaval that has already affected the west London club, Brentford are adamant they don’t want to lose Wissa and Mbeumo this summer.

What will Newcastle and Isak do next?

Newcastle have always stated that their star striker is not available for sale.

They do not want to give up any of their star names because Champions League football is in full swing this year.

Newcastle are in a comfortable PSR position, just like Liverpool, thanks to Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF).

Isak probably had to actively lobby for a move since he only has three more years on his contract.

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire told BBC Sport, “Newcastle are not under any pressure to sell from a PSR perspective.”

“The good news for Newcastle is that the PSR assessment for the three years ending June 30, 2025 will not include the losses of £73 million in 2021-22.

“Neerland lost £157 million in pretaxes up until June 30, 2024.”

The club’s losses for 24-25 are likely to be much lower because of increased commercial revenues, matchday earnings from cup victories, and increased broadcast earnings from a Premier League win in fifth place, in addition to bonuses for Champions League qualifying next season.
