Venezuela to probe El Salvador’s Bukele for ‘torture’ of US deportees

Venezuela has launched an investigation into the alleged involvement of El Salvador’s president, Nayib Bukele, and his senior officials in the detention of 252 migrants after they were deported from the United States.

Attorney General of Venezuela, Tarek William Saab, announced the news in Caracas on Monday, as he revealed the accounts of some of the men who claimed they were beaten, sexually abused, and given rotten food while incarcerated in a notorious El Salvador prison.

Saab urged the UN Human Rights Council and the International Criminal Court (ICC) to take action because some patients were denied access to medical care or treated without anaesthesia.

After US President Donald Trump invoked the 1798 Alien Enemies Act to deport alleged Tren de Aragua gang members without receiving proper evidence, the Venezuelans were deported from El Salvador in March.

Human rights organizations voiced fierce opposition to the deportations, and the Trump administration fought back legal. Many of the men’s families and attorneys deny having gang connections.

Prisoner swap

In exchange for 10 US citizens and political prisoners detained in Venezuela, the former detainees made their way to Caracas on Friday following their release from El Salvador.

Saab claimed that the prosecutor’s office was interviewing the refugees who had returned. Some of the former prisoners have since reconnected with their families, but they haven’t yet left their homes.

One person had a split lip, several had bruises on their bodies, and one had rubber bullet wounds on their bodies.

Andry Hernandez Romero, a 32-year-old beautician from El Salvador, claimed he had hardly lived through the ordeal.

In a video that Saab presented, he claimed, “We were going through torture, physical aggressions, psychological aggressions.” I experienced sexual abuse.

Others described being imprisoned in “inhuman cells,” dehydrated from sunlight and ventilation, and given rotten food and unsafe drinking water while imprisoned in El Salvador.

The men were denied access to lawyers or their families, and the last time they were seen were when Bukele’s government published photos of them arriving at the prison strung and shorn.

Venezuela will look into Osiris Luna Meza and Gustavo Villatoro, the country’s justice minister, according to Saab.

The media contacted Bukele’s office to request a comment, but the office did not respond right away. Bukele did not respond to the abuse allegations until late on Monday when she reported the return on social media.

He claimed on X that the Maduro regime was happy with the swap agreement. They now yell their contempt because they have just realized they have no longer hostages in the most powerful nation on earth.

On his television program on Monday, President Nicolas Maduro claimed that Bukele had made an “last-minute” attempt to stop the migrants from leaving.

He said, “You could not stop the first plane, but he put a car on the runway for the second plane to cause an accident or stop them from leaving.”

In a television interview on Monday, Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado referred to the situation as an “exchange of prisoners of war.”

Similar allegations of torturing prisoners and denying them access to political prisoners’ legal representation also apply to Venezuela, which is currently the subject of an ICC investigation in The Hague.

Are Aston Martin dark horses to sign Verstappen?

After a three-week break, the Formula 1 season resumes this weekend with the Belgian Grand Prix at the much-loved Spa-Francorchamps circuit.

Following Christian Horner’s dismissal as team principal, Laurent Mekies will take charge of Red Bull for the first time.

With Adrian Newey at Aston Martin and his history of making cars that Verstappen is strong in, does that make them dark horses to sign Max if he does leave Red Bull? – Dan

For 2026, Aston Martin already has two drivers committed.

Fernando Alonso’s contract runs out at the end of next season, and Lance Stroll will drive there for as long as he wants.

The team effectively serves him because Stroll is Lawrence Stroll’s son.

That implies that Alonso and Verstappen would need to work out a deal if they wanted to switch from Red Bull to Aston Martin.

Given that Alonso gets his first chance to drive an Adrian Newey-designed car next year, the chances of him being especially amenable to that are low. In such a situation, any benefit would have to be quite substantial, one might think.

After all, there doesn’t seem to be any movement in this direction at the moment, and while nothing is impossible in F1, one can always be surprised.

If Verstappen is to leave Red Bull, it is most likely to be to Mercedes. He’s still undetermined at this time.

How difficult is it for a team principal to transition halfway through the season? Particularly at Red Bull where the outgoing team principal seemed to have a lot of the control and responsibility. – Steve

Christian Horner’s position as Red Bull team principal has changed significantly. This weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix will be the first time in Red Bull’s 20-year history that someone else other than Horner is in charge of the team.

Laurent Mekies, his replacement, is a very capable and well-liked player in Formula One.

Mekies already comprehends the Red Bull structure well. He had been working as team principal at their second team since the start of last year and before that spent a decade there as an engineer before moving to the FIA in 2014. From 2018 to 2018, he also worked for Ferrari.

Mekies will undoubtedly be familiar with his new environment because Racing Bulls will have a lot of their parts obtained from Red Bull.

He will have spent the past two weeks getting to know Red Bull as well as he can at their Milton Keynes base – as well as a test day that he attended in the days immediately following his appointment.

Mekies already recognizes that he is joining a highly capable team. He won’t want to immediately make significant adjustments.

Interesting that so many teams have added new floors over the past few races in the context of teams that are focusing on 2026 cars. Do floors offer the best value for money performance upgrade over other parts, or are they more reusable than other parts? – Sam

The introduction of new floors by teams this year is not in any way connected to the new rules for the following year.

The floor is undoubtedly where teams’ attention will be as they try to make their cars more quickly throughout the season because it is the most powerful component of the design on the current F1 cars.

But any floor that is introduced this year is not relevant to next year because the technical regulations for 2026 are completely different in aerodynamic philosophy.

The cars that have been in Formula One since 2022, known as the “venturi floors,” will be retired next year.

Instead, F1 switches to “step-plane” floors, which are used before 2022.

These have a central section which is the lowest part of the floor, and then a ‘ step ‘ either side to a higher section which, from the front of the floor to ahead of the rear tyres, is flat, rather than curved in a wing shape as now.

Due to the FIA’s string of regulations governing what teams can do to control airflow in the backseats, the cars will have to be run differently from that time.

These restrictions in the rules “make it more difficult to hold on to the downforce at high ride heights,” according to Mercedes technical director James Allison.

In the era from 2017-21, there was a lot of discussion about the cars ‘ rake.

Mercedes ran a low and Red Bull a high rake, a steeper angle from the front to back. In other words, the Mercedes’ rear was higher than the Red Bull’s. Red Bull’s was the style followed by most teams at the time, even though this was the era of ground-breaking Mercedes success.

These strategies involved various philosophies of handling a phenomenon known as “tyre squirt.”

Where the rear tire’s inner shoulder meets the ground, there is a messy airflow. It disturbs the clean flow of air teams want through the diffuser, the upswept part of the floor at the back of the car.

Teams want to clean up the airflow in an effort to reduce the diffuser’s downforce, and there were a number of methods before the previous regulations. However, the new regulations contain provisions meant to limit that possibility.

According to Allison, this will likely mean that the cars next year typically run lower at the rear than in the previous generation – but not as low as the ground-effect cars of the current era.

When the manufacturers presumably keep everything as secret as possible, how can teams get a sense of who is ahead with developing the new engines for 2026? – Alex

No one should actually be aware of the relative performance of the next year’s engines because the manufacturers are all working on them separately, so this is a good question.

However, F1 may be a big deal and have a sizable following, but it’s a small world and people talk.

For a start, the manufacturers have to discuss their engines with governing body the FIA for a whole bunch of reasons.

Then, there is a shift in employment between teams and manufacturers: people leaving one engine company for another. They will obviously be able to tell their new employer where their former employer was when they arrive and share that information with them.

And then there is just general gossip between people in the paddock.

Therefore, while each manufacturer makes an effort to prevent performance figures from creeping out, they inevitably do so in some cases.

An impression develops in that manner.

The last time there was a major change of engine design, there was a lot of talk about Mercedes being ahead of the rest. Before the cars first started testing in the pre-season, it became clear that it was true, but no one knew for sure until that was the case.

This year’s situation seems to resemble it greatly. Again, no one knows for sure, but the grapevine says that Mercedes are ahead.

The new rules are incredibly complex.

With the removal of the MGU-H, the component of the hybrid system that recovers energy from the turbo, the engine architecture is changing.

The power split of the engine is changing, with the electrical part of the engine now set to produce about 50% of total output, up from about 20% currently.

The need to recover that much energy has resulted in a change in aerodynamic regulations due to the removal of the MGU-H, which had a significant impact on recovery.

F1 has introduced moveable aerodynamics, with high- and low-drag modes available on both the front and rear wings. The idea is that drag can be reduced on the straights, to increase speeds, to make braking distances longer, to increase the time energy can be recovered during braking.

The engines’ deployment and recovery functions will also be fundamentally different from what they are now.

For instance, the engines will likely be turned on high revs during corners just to conserve energy for use on the straights. In that situation, the internal combustion engine is effectively being used as an energy generator for the battery.

Then there is the entirely renewable fuel, which is produced without the use of fossil fuels. These will also affect performance.

Effectively, snippets of information about all these aspects of the new engines creep out one way or another, and a sense of who is in a good place and who is less so starts to coalesce.

Joanna Lumley says King Charles ‘really is ill’ as she shares rare health battle insight

After being diagnosed with cancer last year, Joanna Lumley has expressed her deep admiration for King Charles and provided a rare insight into how the monarch is handling his health battle.

Absolutely Fabulous legend Dame Joanna Lumley, a devoted royalist, has showered King Charles with glowing praise – describing the monarch as being “exceptionally brave”.

The 79-year-old actress, who received her damehood three years ago, offered the glowing tribute while discussing Charles’ ongoing health struggles, following his cancer diagnosis in February 2024. Speaking to Saga Magazine, she said: “He’s exceptionally brave, because he really is ill, but practically nobody can keep up with him. He packs so much into every day, he walks faster than anybody I’ve ever met – he’s incredible.”

Yet Joanna’s deep respect for Charles stretches back decades, as she insisted he had already established an extraordinary legacy well before ascending to the throne.

She declared: “He was the most brilliant Prince of Wales we will ever see, without being cruel to Prince William, because he had the role for so long. The Prince’s Trust was set up when he was in his twenties – what a far-thinking thing to do!”

Having encountered both Charles and Queen Camilla personally, Joanna described the latter as a “golden, fabulous person”.

The veteran performer claimed the press had backed Diana throughout the Royal couple’s marital troubles, noting that “so much mud was flung” at the woman then known as Camilla Parker Bowles. She added: “But now she goes about her job without any rancour.”

Joanna received an OBE in the 1995 New Year Honours List before securing her Dame title 27 years later.

She revealed that a letter that she received from the news to her revealed that she was completely teary-eyed at the time of her revelations.

The 2022 honours were the final New Year’s awards distributed by Queen Elizabeth II before her death nine months later, following her Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

Offering a glimpse into the late monarch, she remarked: “She left so gracefully, remaining upright and swearing in Liz Truss as Prime Minister until the very last minute. We never saw her use a wheelchair, even though she was very frail. She was compos mentis, then she went to her bed and died.”

A Queen for All Seasons: A Celebration of Queen Elizabeth II was published by Joanna in 2021. She explained to Jonathan Ross that the book featured tales from people who had encountered her throughout her reign, including those who had given her flowers on the street from people like Winston Churchill.

One tale came from rock legend Rob Halford from Judas Priest, with Joanna revealing: “He went to Buckingham Palace and heard the queen say ‘heavy metal.’ He said ‘I never believed I’d hear The Queen say the words heavy metal.'”

Paul Weller shares terrifying moment he was attacked by lion on the way to a gig

The former The Jam frontman claimed that Ronnie’s van, his dad’s friend, was giving him a lift while he was getting a lift.

Paul Weller has revealed he was attacked by a lion whilst travelling to a performance. The ex-Jam frontman revealed he was hitching a ride in his father’s mate Ronnie’s van – who housed the wild animal as a companion.

John Weller had enlisted his friend’s help when his son’s group needed transport to a Surrey show, with the big cat already aboard. Paul, 67, explained: “Yeah, I mean, it wasn’t fully grown at that point.

Yes, so the lion would travel in the passenger seat and Ronnie would drive the van. However, you couldn’t get too at ease.

You had to watch that, I told you. Because I leant on the back of the passenger seat one time while we were in the back. The f****** lion has already left for me, I’m afraid.

He “f***ing went for me!” Man, I almost s*** myself. A lion accompanies it! “.

The You Do Something To Me vocalist said he had to endure another journey with the creature on the return trip. He quipped: “Well, Ronnie just dropped us off and came back later. With the lion, yeah.”, reports the Daily Star.

He kept it for a while, but I believe he eventually had to give up because it was getting too big, as the neighbors started disappearing.

Paul added that he is content to take a break from live performances for the time being despite continuing to release new material. The Modfather said he cherishes special moments with John Paul, Bowie, and Nova, the trio’s three children.

He admitted, “I’m just enjoying spending more time with the kids and the feeling of not panicking every morning and asking, “Where are we tonight?” stomach churning, “.

I simply require a break from that. What do you know? Simply put, I believe that will continue to be the case. Johnny Marr and I exchanged the same phrase. You wake up anxious and prickly every time.

A large predatory cat was discovered close to Ed Sheeran’s rural retreat just last month. With his wife Cherry Seaborn and their two daughters, the “Perfect” singer lives in this far-off place.

However, less than five miles from Sheeran’s estate, a terrifyingly close black panther-like creature was spotted in the countryside. On a local’s mobile phone camera, a person managed to capture the creature. Eye, a town in Suffolk north of Ipswich, was the location of the sighting.

The witness reported seeing a large, black animal walking up and down the tree line at the end of a field behind their garden, according to Matt Salusbury, the website’s curator.

When they photographed the animal, it was only a short walk away. They waited for more than five minutes before placing its head up in the air.

Although it was only recently revealed that this eerie encounter occurred on April 23rd. In a previous incident, growling sounds were audible in the nearby village of Mendlesham.

Retiring Taylor deserves place in Hall of Fame – Frampton

Media PA

Carl Frampton believes Josh Taylor deserves to be inducted into boxing’s Hall of Fame because of his undisputed world record-winning performance.

After a career that included winning Commonwealth Games silver and gold medals for Scotland, representing Team GB at the 2012 Olympics, and becoming the first – and the only – male fighter from the UK to win all four world titles in a single division, the 34-year-old is retiring on medical grounds.

When Oleksander Usyk defeated Daniel Dubois over the weekend, “we see how much of a big deal” people make of the undisputed heavyweight champion. That is unbelievable considering Josh Taylor won every fight he entered. Really difficult to comprehend.

So I believe people should remember Josh for doing that. Without being someone like a Vasiliy Lomachenko, Usyk, or someone else like that, it literally doesn’t happen. That fighter’s skill sets the stage for this.

One of the greatest British sporting accomplishments ever should be Josh Taylor’s becoming undisputed champion in 18 fights in a marquee division, not down at light-flyweight where no one fights or anything like that.

Undisputed light-welterweight champion in 18 fights is, in my opinion, Hall of Fame behavior.

Former two-weight world champions Taylor and Frampton trained alongside one another when both were under Shane McGuigan’s wing, with the Scot making his professional debut on a Texas show with Frampton in 2015 .

I was present the entire time, essentially, as Foxborough told BBC Scotland.

Josh is both a good person and a great friend of mine. And he performs many admirable things in secret that no one notices. Josh is a genuine good guy.
