Norwich City have sacked head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup and placed ex-Arsenal and England midfielder Jack Wilshere in charge for their two remaining games of the season.
Thorup, 36, was appointed in May 2024 as the replacement for David Wagner, who had been sacked following the Canaries’ play-off defeat by Leeds United.
But the Dane leaves Carrow Road following a run of six defeats in eight Championship matches.
“While we made this appointment with a long-term focus and in line with our wider club strategy and direction, unfortunately recent results and performances have deemed it necessary for us make a change,” said sporting director Ben Knapper.
Norwich won 14 out of 47 games under Thorup, who was previously in charge of FC Nordsjaelland. His assistant Glen Riddersholm has also left the club.
Knapper added: “They are both fantastic people who worked tirelessly to help improve and move our football club forward. We all wish the two of them the best in the next stage of their respective careers. “
Norwich lost both games over the Easter weekend, to Portsmouth and Millwall, conceding eight goals in the process and are 14th in the table, 13 points outside the play-off places.
“There is no short-term solution here, it’s long-term and hopefully with all the decisions we have taken and are going to take we’ll build an even stronger team, a team that is better suited to the way we want to play,” Thorup had told BBC Radio Norfolk following Monday’s 3-1 defeat by Millwall.
Wilshere, who will be assisted by Tony Roberts and Nick Stanley, will take charge of Saturday’s trip to Middlesbrough and the Canaries’ final-day game at home to Cardiff on 3 May.

The Prince and Princess of Wales have revealed their plans for their 14th wedding anniversary next week. It has been announced that they will spend the big day on a two-day trip to Scotland, where they will celebrate rural communities.
William and Kate will travel to the Isle of Mull, off Scotland’s west coast, for a two-day visit to meet craftspeople, farmers and residents. Life partners for more than 20 years, the couple met at the University of St Andrews in Fife, Scotland, and became friends first before embarking on a romance. They wed in a grand fairy-tale ceremony in Westminster Abbey on April 29 2011, with the aisle of the Gothic London church lined with trees.

William and Kate had their first child, Prince George in 2013, followed by Princess Charlotte in 2015 and Prince Louis in 2018, and it appears their relationship, following Kate’s cancer journey, remains strong. William has a connection with the Isle of Mull because it is part of lands once ruled by the Lord of the Isles, one of a number of Scottish titles he inherited from his father when Charles became King.
In Scotland, William and Kate are officially known by their Scottish titles as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay. They will begin their visit on April 29 in the town of Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, where the popular BBC children’s television series Balamory was filmed.

During the visit, William and Kate’s Royal Foundation will announce a partnership to support and develop two community spaces across Mull, with the project aiming to ensure residents can continue to meet and join activities.

They will also visit a croft and restaurant on the West Coast, meeting the Hebridean sheep farmed on the 50-acre site and helping select garden produce for the menu. On the final day, William and Kate will meet countryside rangers from the Mull and Iona Ranger Service at the Ardura Community Forest, join a school group as they take part in outdoor learning, and meet Ardura Acorns, an early years outdoor learning playgroup that includes nature trails, den-building and animal tracking. The visit aims to highlight the importance of protecting and championing the natural environment.
William and Kate will be returning to work following the Easter break, where they spent time with their children. They skipped the royals’ traditional Easter Sunday service with the rest of the Firm at Windsor Castle.
William told the King of his intention to miss the annual gathering, to “enjoy some extended time as a family over Easter”, a source said. “They are choosing to spend time together as a family before the children go back to school”, the source added.
