Saudi Arabia, Qatar to settle Syria’s outstanding debt to World Bank

In the most recent effort to reverse the economic fortunes of a country that has been plagued by civil war, Saudi Arabia and Qatar have announced that they will pay roughly $15 million in debt to the World Bank.

Since President Bashar al-Assad’s ouster in December, both Gulf countries have been instrumental in promoting diplomatic relations with Syria’s new interim government.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Qatar’s finance ministries jointly commit to paying roughly $15 million in outstanding arrears to the World Bank Group, according to a statement released on Sunday.

The statement was made just days after the first time in more than 20 years that Syria’s central bank governor and finance minister had attended the spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank.

When the Syrian civil war broke out, operations at the World Bank had been suspended. It will be able to resume receiving bank technical assistance after its debt has been settled.

After being suspended for more than 14 years, the Saudi statement stated that “this commitment will allow the World Bank Group to resume support and operations in Syria.”

“It will also allow Syria to receive immediate financial support for the development of crucial sectors.”

Nearly 14 years of a ruinous civil war, which started with a brutal crackdown on pro-democracy protests during the Arab Spring in 2011, has destroyed a large portion of Syria’s infrastructure.

Syria’s new government has attempted to reestablish its diplomatic ties, including with international financial institutions, following Al-Assad’s ouster in a lightning attack by Islamist-led rebels in December.

The wealthy Gulf Arab states are a key player in funding Syria’s government’s reconstruction and revitalizing its economy.

The interim president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, wants to leave the corrupt system that presided over the al-Assad family’s control of key industries and gave al-Assad loyalists exclusive access to government contracts.

China’s Huawei develops new AI chip to compete with US’s Nvidia: Report

According to the Wall Street Journal, China’s Huawei Technologies plans to test its most recent and potent artificial intelligence (AI) processor in order to take the place of some of the company’s higher-end products, including those from US chip company Nvidia.

According to people with knowledge of the situation, Huawei has spoken with some Chinese tech companies to try to determine the Ascend 910D’s technical viability, according to a report from the US newspaper on Sunday.

The Chinese company anticipates receiving the first batch of samples from the processor’s first batch as early as late May because the most recent iteration of its Ascend AI processors will be more powerful than the H100, according to the report. 910B and 910C were the previous names for the system.

The chip is still in its early stages of development, according to the interviewees, and it will be subject to a number of tests to assess its performance before being used by the public.

Huawei’s advanced 910C artificial intelligence chip will be shipped to Chinese customers in large numbers as early as next month, according to a report from Reuters news agency.

Huawei and its Chinese competitors have struggled for years to create top-notch chips that could compete with Nvidia’s products for training models, a process that involves feeding data to algorithms to aid in learning to make informed decisions.

In an effort to slow down China’s technological advancement, especially advancements for its military, Nvidia has banned China from its most cutting-edge AI products, including its flagship B200 chip.

Before the H100 chip even went on sale in the US, US authorities halted its sale in 2022.

Huawei has managed to survive despite the US’s dominance in the technology sector and its attempts to stop Chinese development. As a crucial component of Beijing’s effort to establish a self-sufficient semiconductor industry, the Shenzhen-based company has created some of the country’s most promising alternatives to Nvidia’s AI chips.

Huawei released the premium Mate 60 smartphone in 2023, demonstrating its resilience against US restrictions despite being on a US trade blacklist for nearly six years. The US government was shocked when Gina Raimondo, then-Commerce Secretary, saw the phone and installed it during her visit to Beijing, which was powered by a domestic processor.

Man City Cruise Past Forest To Reach Third Successive FA Cup Final

After overcoming Nottingham Forest to win the FA Cup with a 2-0 advantage on Sunday at Wembley, Manchester City will face Crystal Palace in their third successive finale.

Rico Lewis gave Pep Guardiola’s side an early lead before Josko Gvardiol’s second-half goal made it 2-0.

After the Eagles defeated Aston Villa 3-0 in the other semi-final on Saturday, City can anticipate a showdown with Palace at Wembley on May 17.

City have a chance to win the FA Cup for the eighth time since Guardiola took over the title in their 14th appearance since Guardiola took over the reins in 2016.

After defeating cross-town rivals in the 2023 showpiece, City lost to Manchester United in the FA Cup final last year.

Guardiola hopes to win the FA Cup and earn a place in the Champions League by placing in the top five in the Premier League, salvaging a turbulent season.

City will advance to the final as favorites after beating Palace 5-2 earlier in April at the Etihad Stadium. They are currently fourth in the league with four games left.

However, Guardiola will need no recollection of that season’s success after their four-year reign as English champions was officially ended by Liverpool’s victory against Tottenham at Wembley just as the final whistle blew.

With a game in hand, Forest must lick their wounds and concentrate on their quest to become the first team to reach the Champions League since 1980-81, just two points behind third-placed Newcastle.

It was Forest’s second appearance at Wembley since it reopened in 2007, making City’s 28th appearance there.

As kick-off approached, there was no surprise that the Forest hordes who traveled there were much more vocal, and that large swathes of empty seats were prominent in the City sections.

However, as City’s fans stormed into the lead in the second minute, they quickly made themselves heard.

Slick City –

Guardiola claimed this week that City will be much stronger next season because they have since rediscovered their spirit and drive.

In a crucial 2-1 win over Villa on Wednesday, the City manager was encouraged by his team’s wild celebrations of Bernardo Silva’s opening goal.

Lewis took advantage of the far too much space on the edge of the Forest area with a fierce drive into the bottom corner after a questioning period of City passing.

Forest was too busy for Forest to handle City’s pressing, so Nico O’Reilly waltzed through Forest’s defense to deliver a fizzed blast just wide.

Nuno Espirito Santo, Forest manager, gambled on Zach Abbott at right-back while Neco Williams was suspended and Ola Aina and Ryan Yates were injured, and Anthony Elanga was unsurprisingly sat on the bench.

Abbott, who had only played 60 minutes this season, was repeatedly exposed by City’s attacks and Forest, who was lacking in a cutting edge without Elanga, who was the backbone of Nuno’s moves for the majority of the first half.

In the City area, Forest only had one touch after the first half when he couldn’t pull off a single shot.

Elanga should have celebrated his 23rd birthday with a goal when Nuno sent him on from Callum Hudson-Odoi’s pass.

However, in the 51st minute, City displayed the same ruthless resolve as Forest did.

Gvardiol rose highest to head home after Matz Sels pushed his effort away for a corner and Omar Marmoush’s set-piece left him essentially unchallenged.

Morgan Gibbs-White of Forest slammed another effort off the post after Morgan Gibbs-White crashed a volley off the crossbar.

With a back-heeled movie, Taiwo Awoniyi also made a Woody Woods debut for Forest.

Pregnant Jesy Nelson cheers on partner Zion Foster from hospital as he tackles London Marathon

Jesy Nelson, the former Little Mix star, supported her partner Zion Foster on Sunday when they ran the London Marathon and raised money for charities on social media.

Jesy Nelson was cheering on her partner from hospital as he took part in the London Marathon. The 33-year-old former Little Mix star is pregnant with twins – which she is expecting with musician Zion Foster, 25.

The couple have gone through troubling times over the course of their pregnancy – with Jesy rushed to hospital after it was discovered her twins were at risk of a condition called twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome. If untreated, the condition can cause issues for the unborn twins – including growth problems, organ failure, and even death.

Last month, the singer had emergency surgery to save her children. Zion ran the London Marathon on Sunday to raise awareness of the condition.

Still hospital-bound, Jesy supported her partner by watching the race on TV. Taking to Instagram Stories, the Mine singer shared a snap of the TV screen she was looking up at from her hospital bed.

She captioned the image, “I’m so excited this morning knowing that my baby is running the marathon for both our babies and Twins Trust.” @zionfoster “You got this my angel, my heart feels so proud of you.”

Zion made it known prior to the event that he was running for the Twins Trust. The rapper said in a statement released via a fundraising page that his partner and I were expecting identical twins when we discovered their condition in the first trimester. Because they share a placenta, one twin will ultimately take more of the blood supply and nutrients from the other, which comes with a lot of risks. It is rare, life-threatening, and rare.

It’s been a very terrifying and worrying time for us to be pregnant, and it’s awful to consider the possibility of both of our children passing away. Before Jesy became pregnant, we were unaware of TTTS, so we decided to use our platform to raise awareness and support families like ours as soon as we could.

Zion continued: “That’s why the Twins Trust is our chosen charity and I want to raise as much money for them as I possibly can. Not only do they raise awareness of conditions like TTTS, but they also work closely with the NHS to audit maternity units in hospitals and their brilliant work has already saved the lives of many babies in the UK.”

He continued, “They support multiples’ families around the clock and raise money for further research into multiple pregnancies and complications that may arise,” and he continued, “They request donations for the charity.”

Zion and Jesy have been keeping fans updated on the progress of their pregnancy – including the procedures the former X Factor star underwent to save their babies. Following surgery, the couple took to Instagram to share information.

Hello everyone, we just wanted to update you because we know it’s been a while. We want to wish all the amazing and courageous mothers out there a happy Mother’s Day. Second, I’ve been recovering because we’re still being treated in the hospital.

“But we have some fantastic news. The operation was a success, which is just incredible, and the TTTS has cleared up. We have the most amazing doctors, and we are so, so fortunate. My cervix is very, very short, so I can’t leave the hospital because my waters could break at any point and I’m still very, very early, which is basically the current situation.

Jesy continued, “So yeah, I can’t leave the hospital until a certain number of weeks.” Although we pray that the babies will stay in my belly each week, we are also so appreciative that they are still here, that they are still developing, and that we are also appreciative of that.

Zion then said, “We’re in such a blessed, blessed situation to even be able to make this video and share this good news.” Zion made the announcement that he would run the marathon at this time, at the end of March.
