Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 1,358

Here is how things stand on Thursday, November 13:

Fighting

  • Russian forces launched 645 attacks on Ukraine’s Zaporizhia region in the past day, killing one person in the Polohivskyi district, Governor Ivan Fedorov wrote in a post on Telegram.
  • A Russian drone attack on a railway facility killed a security guard in Ukraine’s Kherson region, Governor Oleksandr Prokudin wrote in a post on Facebook.
  • Russian forces targeted Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region with drone attacks, killing a 47-year-old man in the Vasylkivska community of the Synelnyky district, the region’s military administration said in a post on Telegram.
  • A woman was killed in Ukrainian shelling on Vodyane village, in a Russian-occupied area of Zaporizhia, Russia’s TASS state news agency has reported, citing Russian-appointed local officials.

Ceasefire

  • Group of Seven (G7) foreign ministers, including United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio, met in Canada’s Niagara region on Wednesday to discuss ways to increase pressure on Russia to end the war in Ukraine.
  • European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas told the Reuters news agency on the sidelines of the meeting that the talks focused on putting more pressure on Russia “in order to make them have peace”.
  • “[The US] have had engagements [with Russia] and we have all welcomed their engagements … But to be very, very frank … their assessment is that Russia has no way changed its goals so it’s not genuine about the peace talks,” Kallas said.
  • Russia is ready to resume ceasefire negotiations with Ukraine in Istanbul, but “the ball is in Ukraine’s court”, Russian Foreign Ministry official Alexei Polishchuk told TASS.
  • TASS also published remarks from Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov that it said the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera had declined to publish following an interview. They included claims from Lavrov about the number of bodies of slain soldiers exchanged with Ukraine under previous agreements and the conduct of Russian forces.

Sanctions

  • Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand announced additional sanctions against Moscow on Wednesday, targeting Russia’s drone programme, liquefied natural gas entities and vessels from Russia’s shadow fleet, among others, according to a statement.
  • Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha praised Washington for new energy sanctions imposed on Russian oil companies last month, after he met with the G7 foreign ministers in Niagara on Wednesday.
  • “We need to continue to increase the cost of war for Putin and his regime, forcing Russia to end the war,” Sybiha wrote on X.

Corruption

  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for the dismissal of two cabinet ministers on Wednesday amid a probe into an alleged $100m corruption scheme involving nuclear agency Energoatom and other state enterprises.
  • Zelenskyy, whose former business associate from his comedy career is among the suspects, said in a video address that corruption in the energy sector – weakened by regular Russian air strikes on infrastructure – was “absolutely unacceptable”.
  • EU foreign policy chief Kallas, speaking at the G7 meeting in Canada, told Reuters the corruption scandal was “extremely unfortunate” and said that Ukrainian authorities were “acting very forcefully”.

Regional developments

  • The Moldova Metropolis, Moldova’s largest Orthodox church, has rejected being labelled a “Russian church”.
  • “The Orthodox Church of Moldova is not a ‘Russian church’ but rather a church of the entire people living in Moldova, made up of believers of different national groups,” the Moldova Metropolis said after a synod. “It is free and independent in its operations,” it added.

Who won the last Eubank Jr vs Benn fight?

The rivals last met on April 26 at the same venue in a much-hyped grudge match, which Eubank Jr won on a unanimous points decision to hand Benn his first career defeat.

All three judges scored the fight 116-112 after a pulsating 12-round slugfest, with both men coming out hard from the start and going toe-to-toe in the dramatic fight.

Why are Eubank Jr and Benn fighting again?

A rematch between the pair was in the contract, and promoter Eddie Hearn made it clear after the April fight that it would happen.

Benn argued successfully that his consumption of eggs elevated his testosterone levels.

At their first media face-to-face before the April fight, Eubank pulled out an egg and smacked it on Benn’s face. The British Boxing Board of Control fined him $130,000.

Who is Chris Eubank Jr?

Son of British boxing great and former middleweight boxing champion Chris Eubank, Eubank Jr is a professional boxer from Hove, a southern seaside town in the UK.

Since making his professional debut in 2011, the 35-year-old has become the reigning middleweight champion of the International Boxing Organization (IBO), and has also previously held the IBO’s super middleweight title and the World Boxing Organization’s interim middleweight title.

Fighting with an orthodox stance, Eubank Jr is the top-ranked middleweight boxer in the UK and third in the world.

What’s Eubank Jr’s fight record?

  • Bouts: 38
  • Wins: 35 – by knockout: 25
  • Losses: 3 – by knockout: 1

Who is Conor Benn?

Benn, too, has boxing flowing through his blood, as his father Nigel Benn was a two-weight champion in the 1990s. Based in the East London suburb of Ilford, the 28-year-old turned professional in 2016.

Benn has faced a fair share of controversy after a failed a doping test in 2022. The then-rising star of British boxing was suspended by the UK’s anti-doping agency for using clomiphene, a fertility drug deemed prohibited. His suspension was lifted in November 2024.

What’s Benn’s fight record?

  • Bouts: 24
  • Wins: 23 – by knockout: 14
  • Losses: 1

Will both boxers adjust their weights for the fight?

The bout will be fought at middleweight – 160lbs (71.5kg) – similar to the previous bout, where Benn had to move up from his welterweight division – 147lbs (66kg). He went in lighter than expected at 156.4lbs.

Meanwhile, Eubank Jr fights at middleweight, but since the boxers cannot weigh more than 170lbs (77kg) on fight night, he will have to drop from his 180lbs (81kg).

Eubank Jr was fined $500,000 after hitting the scales half an ounce over the limit for the April fight.

Both fighters will have to monitor their weight as the rehydration clause does not allow them to put on more than 10lbs (4.5kg) during the time between the weigh-in and the day of the fight.

Why was the Eubank Jr-Benn fight cancelled three year ago?

The first bout was originally set for 2022, but was scrapped after Benn’s voluntary urine test showed trace amounts of the fertility drug clomiphene, a banned substance that boosts testosterone levels while burning fat.

What’s the history of the Eubank vs Benn rivalry?

Saturday’s bout is a battle of second-generation contenders, reviving the Benn v Eubank feud in which the rivals’ fathers battled it out in two ferocious contests in the early 1990s.

The pair’s first gruesome fight took place in November 1990, and Eubank won by total knockout in the ninth round. A much-anticipated rematch was set up three years later and ended in a draw, leading to both men retaining their respective belts.

How can I buy tickets for Eubank Jr vs Benn?

Tickets are still up for grabs on several online platforms, including the venue’s own website.

Zayn Malik reunites with One Direction 10 years after quitting the band

Zayn Malik left One Direction in March 2015 after a five-year stint, during which the band — a product of The X Factor — topped the UK singles charts with four songs

Zayn Malik has again been named a director in One Direction’s company PPM Music Limited — reuniting him with the group after more than 10 years.

The singer quit One Direction in March 2015 around five years after they were formed through The X Factor. During that time, the group topped the UK singles charts with four songs and won four Brit awards, including British Single of the Year for What Makes You Beautiful in 2012.

He then had his role as director of PPM Music Limited terminated in June 2016. However, new documents listed with Companies House reveal Zayn, 32, is active once more — as of November 3.

The musician, originally from Bradford, West Yorkshire, is listed as an “Active Director” alongside bandmates Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan. All of them have the same address in central London listed as their addresses.

Reacting the development, a music source told The Sun: “This is a huge moment. While heartbreaking, Liam’s passing has brought them together, it’s even more sad he was the biggest cheerleader of a reunion.”

It is believed the address in question is Lee and Thompson LLP — a leading law firm who specialise in music and media law. The company previously looked after Liam Payne’s solo career, it is reported.

Zayn is to perform seven gigs in Las Vegas in January — his first time entertaining crowds there. He and Louis, 33, have been filming a TV show together across America in recent weeks.

Noting this, the source continued: “Since Liam’s passing the boys have been in contact… PPM was the original company they set up when they were on the show (The X Factor). The name stands for Princess Park Manor, the private gated complex they were moved into when they were on the show.”

The lads came third on The X Factor in 2010 — when the youngest member, Harry, was just 16. The rest were 17, and at such tender ages began their remarkable music careers. One Direction went on to sell more than 70 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling boy bands of all time. They went on an indefinite hiatus in January 2016, around 10 months after Zayn left.

Selby overcomes Williams in decider to reach semi-finals

Mark Selby beat defending champion Mark Williams 6-5 in a final-frame decider to reach the semi-finals of the Champion of Champions in Leicester.

In a high-quality opening between two of the greats – who hold seven world titles between them – Wales’ Williams took the first two frames with breaks of 77 and 114.

England’s Selby responded with two half centuries and a wonderful break of 136 as he reeled off the next four frames to lead 4-2, before Williams replied by edging three hard-fought frames to go 5-4 up.

However, Leicester-born Selby compiled a timely 95 to win the 10th frame and enjoyed a run of 55 to seal a thrilling victory.

“I am just happy to get over the line. It is always nice to do well in your home city.”

Earlier on Wednesday, Selby had defeated Alfie Burden 4-0, while the 50-year-old Williams won 4-0 against Scotland’s Stephen Maguire.

Earps return ‘talk of Manchester’ but Middleton-Patel steals show

Manchester United’s victory over Paris St-Germain was a significant one – but conversation before, during and after the Women’s Champions League match was dominated by goalkeepers.

Mary Earps’ long-awaited return to Old Trafford was the talk of Manchester – not just because of her stature as a player – but because of the controversy surrounding the release of her autobiography and the subsequent fallout.

She started in goal for French visitors PSG but her successor as Manchester United’s number one, Phallon Tullis-Joyce, was a surprise omission from Marc Skinner’s squad with a facial injury.

‘I believed in Middleton-Patel’

News of Tullis-Joyce’s absence was passed on to United’s players on matchday, with Middleton-Patel thrust into one of the club’s biggest games this season at short notice.

In front of 14,667 at Old Trafford – their biggest crowd this season – she was tasked with keeping out a PSG side who had reached four of the past five semi-finals in the competition.

Two minutes in, she was given a sharp reminder of where she was when Jennifer Echegini’s powerful effort bounced back off the inside of her left post.

This is a competition for Europe’s elite and was a step up from Middleton-Patel’s only previous appearance for United – a Women’s League Cup fixture against second-tier side Newcastle United.

However, she did represent Wales at this summer’s Euros – experience which clearly stood her in good stead on this stage.

“She was my player of the match. What you can’t measure is the psychological magnitude she has had to jump,” Skinner said of her display.

“From that performance [against Newcastle] to this, how she has matured over the last year, is credit to her and the staff.

“She was just stood at the tunnel [at full-time] and taking it in. Really well done to her. She deserves to stand out.”

Middleton-Patel quickly settled in, showing her pedigree with a brilliant second-half save to push Anais Ebayilin’s strike on to the post and out for a corner.

It came just a minute after half-time, shortly after Olga Carmona had equalised for PSG to make it 1-1. United went on to regain their lead through Fridolina Rolfo, adding to Melvine Malard’s superb early opener.

“When I found out Phallon wasn’t going to start the game, I said I believed in her. I wanted Safia to be herself,” added Skinner.

“She is a good footballer so she calms the build-up. She took it in her stride. I’m honestly really proud of her.

“She had a few nerves and I think [United forward] Rachel Williams did some star jumps with her so she got the energy out. But she took it really well.

‘She was a big part of what we have done’

While Middleton-Patel stole the show by the end of the night, it was Earps who was the focus before kick-off.

The mural of Earps, painted outside Old Trafford following her heroics with England at Euro 2022, bore a ‘Welcome to Manchester’ message which felt riddled with irony as she stepped out in the pouring northern rain in the opponent’s colours.

She was a heroine to many during her time at United and played a key role in the club’s first FA Cup victory, and their rise up the Women’s Super League table.

This time she was a football enemy, arriving in a cloud of controversy, and received boos when her name was read out by the stadium announcer.

More boos followed when she touched the ball, mixed in with some cheers from loyal followers, until she eventually received the adulation of the Old Trafford crowd when she walked along the stands applauding them at full-time, and was warmly received in return.

“A lot of the public has great interest in seeing Mary play. I’m very happy to have a player like her in our team,” said PSG boss Paulo Cesar afterwards.

“The fans here were clearly behind her. At the beginning, perhaps not, but by the end of the game her quality shone through.

“She put in a great performance today and she gives confidence to the team. I’m very happy with her.”

Skinner said in his pre-match media conference he expected the United fans to make life difficult for Earps as an opponent, but hoped she would receive the respect she earned during her five-year spell at the club before leaving in 2024.

When she left the pitch to cheers from the home fans and hugs from former team-mates, the controversy of the past two weeks surrounding her book felt a distant memory.

“It was nice. I said to her at the end to look after herself. Mary is a really intelligent woman and she has been the world’s best so she understands it,” said Skinner.

“It was a lovely atmosphere and she got a cheer when she walked down at the end of the game, and hopefully that helps her in the situation and how she feels.
