Russia’s Putin agrees to 30-day halt in attacks on Ukraine energy targets

After receiving a call from US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to put an end to attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure for 30 days.

Following a protracted phone call between the two leaders on Tuesday, Putin called the Russian military to stop attacking energy facilities. The Kremlin issued a statement in response. However, he refused to sign a larger 30-day ceasefire proposal that Ukraine has said it is ready to implement and that the US has supported.

The leader of Russia expressed concern that Ukraine might use a truce to avenge its two-year conflict and recruit more soldiers.

The Kremlin also mentioned to Trump that “the complete cessation of foreign military aid and the provision of intelligence information to Kyiv” should be the key prerequisite for preventing the escalation of the conflict and working toward its resolution through political and diplomatic means.

The leaders agreed in a statement that Middle Eastern discussions on a potential maritime truce as well as a wider ceasefire would start “immediately.”

Trump and Putin made a commitment to “a full ceasefire, permanent peace, and energy and infrastructure ceasefires,” as well as technical discussions regarding the implementation of a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea.

Trump claimed that the conversation with Putin was “very good and productive.”

Ukraine’s willingness to stop attacking Russia’s energy infrastructure was not immediately known.

Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine has consistently resulted in energy targets attacking critical infrastructure, with Moscow’s strikes frequently causing power outages that range from heating and water distribution to sewage and public health.

Following a countrywide Russian attack that involved more than 130 drones and damaged critical infrastructure, thousands of people in central Ukraine were left without electricity on Tuesday.

Since January, Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries, oil depots, and industrial sites have also increased. According to a Reuters news agency analysis, the attacks destroyed up to 10% of Russian refining capacity during the hardest of the two weeks of February.

Alan Fisher, a journalist from Washington, DC, reported on how Kyiv might be wary that the proposal’s focus is on energy-target attacks.

The Ukrainians aren’t agreeing to an entire ceasefire, he said, because they worry that the Russians will try to gain more land during this time.

They had previously raised that issue with the Americans, and that is a concern for [Kyiv].

According to Al Jazeera’s Dorsa Jabbari, who is based in Moscow, the call appeared to indicate that there was “some momentum” in the diplomatic process.

The Russians are seeking assurances that Ukraine won’t mobilize and rearm during this time. Vladimir Putin’s position on that is undoubtedly a thorn in the side, she said.

She continued, “The Kremlin has made it very clear that any kind of long-term peace settlement must be made clear.”

Ukraine is supported by Europe.

Leaders in Europe said they would continue to support Kyiv.

At a press conference in Berlin with French President Emmanuel Macron, outgoing German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and other foreign ministers reaffirmed their commitment to “Kyiv can count on us, that Ukraine can count on Europe, and that we will not let [Kyiv] down.

Macron declared that “we will continue to support the Ukrainian army in its struggle against Russian aggression.”

According to Scholz, a full ceasefire should be reached as soon as possible.

An Emmerdale actor, 30, who was part of the soap’s cast from September 2018 until October 2019, has shared joyous news after welcoming a baby into his life. However, Asan N’Jie is known for being axed from the show following an altercation where he threatened to stab Hollyoaks star Jamie Lomas at the 2019 TV Choice Awards.

Congratulations were flooded in from followers, one fan even saying, “Huge congrats to you both”! Amy Walsh, a former model for Emmerdale, reacted with awestruck delight, saying, “Awww, babe, this news is gorgeous.”

The pregnancy was only made public last month when Asan hinted at the exciting future arrival on Instagram, writing: “Can’t wait to meet Liccle baby boy.”

Asan shared heartfelt photos of his newborn that show him holding the baby.

Asan’s stint as Ellis Chapman in Emmerdale had a controversial end when he was caught threatening Jamie Lomas with violence during the awards ceremony in 2019, purportedly saying, “Do you think you are a f***ing big man? I’m going to f***ing kill you,” followed by, “I’m going to f***ing knife you.”

Asan allegedly made offensive remarks toward Kym Marsh’s ex-husband at the beginning of the conflict.

Post-incident, Asan’s contract was terminated swiftly, and another actor stepped into the role of Ellis. It was reported that the conflict started with a “completely unprovoked” insult thrown at Jamie by Asan, who later expressed remorse over the incident, commenting: “My behaviour at the TV Choice Awards was completely unacceptable and very much out of character.

I sincerely apologise to everybody who has been affected, especially Jamie Lomas, the entire Emmerdale crew, our viewers, ITV, my family, and the organisers of the TV Choice Awards.”

In 2019, Asan was fired from his position.

Asan continued to appear in scenes from Emmerdale that he had already filmed as his character Ellis Chapman despite being fired at the time.

As a result, soap executives said Ellis would be on screen for another six weeks because it would be “virtually impossible” to cut out his character from the upcoming storylines without reversing episodes.

In the Shepard Christmas movie in 2023, Asann and John Travolta co-starred. The movie is based on Frederick Forsyth’s novel, which follows a fighter pilot who gets lost on Christmas Eve when they get home.

Asan has since appeared in BBC1’s Bloodlands alongside James Nesbitt and BBC2’s Industry despite leaving Emmerdale on unfavorable terms.

‘Political Manipulation’, Atiku Faults Tinubu Over Rivers Emergency Rule

Atiku Abubakar, the former vice president, has condemned the state of emergency in Rivers state as a serious assault on democracy.

The former vice president responded on his verified Facebook page, blaming the declaration as being deceptive and made in bad faith.

According to him, Bola Tinubu, the president of Rivers State, has no way of avoiding responsibility for the chaos his administration has caused or failed to cause.

He added that the President should assume full responsibility for damage to the state’s infrastructure rather than declare state of emergency on the residents of Rivers State.

According to Akiku, the Rivers State declaration of a state of emergency resembles political scheming and absolute bad faith.

Bola Tinubu has played a vested partisan role in the political unrest that is engulfing Rivers, according to those who are monitoring the unfolding crisis. His blatant inaction, or his deliberate carelessness, is nothing short of scandalous.

Beyond the political plot in the rivers, the blatant security breaches that led to the state’s president’s desk’s condemnable destruction of the nation’s infrastructure.

Tinubu is unable to accept blame for the chaos that his administration has caused or failed to cause.

Under the leadership of Tinubu, the Niger Delta was reintroduced into a violent era of unrest and instability, undoing the hard-won peace that was established by late President Umaru Yar’Adua. In order to pursue egotistical political calculations, years of progress have been recklessly erased.
