Itoje rejects Carling criticism of England coaches

Men’s Six Nations: England v Italy

Venue: Allianz Stadium, Twickenham Date: Sunday, 9 March Kick-off: 15: 00 GMT

England captain Maro Itoje has rejected Will Carling’s suggestion that Steve Borthwick’s inexperienced coaching set-up is preventing the side from reaching its potential.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4 on Tuesday, former skipper Carling questioned the “calibre” of the coaching team and whether it was the “best we can put out there”.

England have been criticised for their style of play during the Six Nations despite recovering from an opening round defeat by Ireland with consecutive one-point victories over France and Scotland at home.

Lock Itoje, who was appointed captain by head coach Borthwick before this year’s tournament, said he disagreed with Carling’s sentiment.

“With all due respect to Will, I don’t necessarily agree or accept that characterisation of our coaching staff”, the 30-year-old told BBC Sport.

“I have been unbelievably impressed with how they have gone about their business and coached us.

” The players work really hard but the coaches, trust me, they work extremely hard.

Borthwick is leading an international team for the first time, having previously held coaching roles with England and Japan before guiding Leicester Tigers to the Premiership title in 2022.

Attack coach Richard Wigglesworth and Kevin Sinfield, who began as defensive lead before moving into a skills role, joined Borthwick from the Tigers backroom.

Defence coach Joe El-Abd is also working in his first international job, combining the role alongside his responsibilities with second-tier French side Oyonnax until the end of the season, while 33-year-old scrum coach Tom Harrison is younger than hooker Jamie George, who will win his 100th cap against Italy on Sunday.

Asked whether it was easy to ignore noise from outside England’s camp, Itoje said: “It’s a requirement.

” We play a public sport, in front of 80, 000 at Allianz Stadium and millions at home every time we pull on an England jersey.

“We want people to be engaged with rugby and have an opinion because if they don’t, it probably means they don’t care but as players, what we need to do is focus on what we deem important. That is the skill of anybody who lives a relatively public life.

” People will have an opinion on what you do but what really matters is the opinion you have and the opinion of those in your circles. “

Itoje’s backing of the coaching staff was echoed by utility back Elliot Daly, who has been rewarded for his impressive form off the bench with a starting berth at full-back against the Azzurri.

Responding to Carling’s comments, Daly told BBC Sport:” I don’t think that is true.

“The coaches have been around this environment for a while, especially Wiggy, Steve and Kev. As a group, they work really well together.

‘ We are aspiring to reach an 80-minute performance ‘

Itoje does accept, however, that England did not perform to their capabilities last time out, despite beating Scotland to regain the Calcutta Cup for the first time in four years.

The hosts were outscored by three tries to one at Allianz Stadium and were grateful for Finn Russell missing a late conversion attempt that would have secured victory for Scotland.

England remain in contention to win the title as they return to their home on Sunday to face an Italy side who have never beaten them and Itoje says his players are targeting a complete performance.

” We didn’t perform as well as we wanted to in all areas but some of what we did was brilliant, “added Itoje.

” That was a fixture we hadn’t been successful in for a number of years so to get the Calcutta Cup back at Twickenham is a good achievement.

“Our discipline was OK but we would like to tidy it up, and we would like to get our attack a bit sharper. In order to do that we need to win more territory”.

Asked what progress would look like against Italy, Itoje added: “Every time you step on the field you are aspiring to reach an 80-minute performance. Not many teams do it because it is so difficult.

MAFS’ Lacey Martin viciously slams ex Nathan Campbell’s new romance with Love Island star

Married At First Sight star Lacey Martin has been left furious that her on-screen husband Nathan Campbell has already moved on with a Love Island rival – branding him fame hungry in an outburst.

Fans of E4’s chaotic reality dating show will recall that Lacey, 27, and Nathan, 24, were one of only two couples that made it all the way through the show as an item during season nine of the series that aired last year. But once the cameras stopped rolling, the pair pulled the plug on their romance and broke up.

Now Nathan has reportedly sparked up a new romance with 26-year-old Abi Moores – who reality show fans will remember as a contestant on season 10 of Love Island in 2023. During her time on the ITV dating show, Abi struck up a romance with footballer Scott van-der-Sluis, 24 – but they were dumped from the villa days before the finale which was ultimately won by Jess Harding and Sammy Root.

Nathan and Abi have recently been linked after they were spotted out on a date last month – but it is being reported that Lacey is regarding dismissing the romance as a publicity stunt. It is suggested that Lacey has knowledge of Nathan’s ambitions – which she has underwritten as proof he is “fame hungry”.

A friend of Lacey’s told The Sun: “Lacey can’t believe after Nathan making out she was the fame hungry one he’s now seeing a girl from Love Island. She feels like this is what he always wanted and that’s fame. He spoke about wanting to be a model and be in a boy band and do I’m A Celeb”.

The friend continued: “She thinks the whole thing is for publicity and proves her point that it wasn’t a one way street he wanted a showmance too. This just got edited out”. The Mirror has contacted representatives of Lacey, Nathan and Abi for comment.

The latest reports come after explosive scenes aired in a reunion episode of Married At First Sight which saw Nathan accusing Lacey of messaging him to suggest the carry on a “showmance” after their time on the E4 show purely to capitalise on their newfound fame. Lacey previously rejected this suggestion and argued that the show had been edited in a way to make her look like the worse half of the relationship.

She told The Sun last month: “They’ve edited it to make me out as this villain. It was completely off. They cut out all of my responses to Nathan and it looks like I just accepted what he was saying, which isn’t fair”.

Amid the latest allegations, Lacey has been sharing cryptic messages via her social media channels. Taking to Instagram Stories, she shared a video clip of a woman merrily raising a glass of champagne with a caption stating: “Always remember s***ty people do s***ty thing because they feel s***ty about themselves not because you deserve s***ty things done to you…”

Eurovision Song Contest’s most controversial acts as 2025 UK entry finally announced

Whether you enjoy the annual singing contest or not, the Eurovision show showcases some of the most iconic and strange performances European TV has ever seen.

Last year, Olly Alexander was chosen as UK’s entry, and successfully paused the progression of Years and Years with his performance. On Friday, the worst kept secret in showbiz was revealed as country trio Remember Monday were announced as this year’s UK act.

2025’s upcoming contest has prompted viewers to reflect on past shockers. Here’s several controversial acts that stopped fans in their tracks.

Though die-hard fans are expected to set alarms and make a night of the annual event, many have expressed they will not be participating in the international celebration due to Eurovision’s refusal to ban Israel from competing despite their attacks on Gaza, and their more recent breaking of the ceasefire.

In the spirit of boycotting, viewers have remained steadfast in their resolve after last year’s controversy when Israel’s entry, Eden Golan, was set to sing sang a (now altered) version of song October Rain, where the country’s team changed the lyrics and the title of the song. This was met with an online frenzy of complaints as the song – which was later renamed Hurricane – was taken as reference the October seventh Hamas attack and the bombing of Gaza that followed. The lyrics included lines: “There’s no air left to breathe” and “they were all good children, each one of them”.

Receiving serious backlash from other contestants and fans alike, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which runs the contest, failed to meet their demands, despite always stating the show to be non-political. Having the power to disqualify entries that breach its a-political rule, fans were made speechless after Israel pledged not to change the lyrics.

Damiano David in 2021

Eventually, a broadcaster agreed to alter it to the request of President, Isaac Herzog, so that Israel could still compete in this year’s contest. Over 2, 000 musicians in Finland, Iceland and Sweden signed separate letters protesting for the country to be banned.

2021’s winners and Grammy nominee Maneskin created a huge controversy as band member Damiano David faced false rumours he had openly been using drugs in the stadium’s green room, live on air. Footage spread online like wildfire showing David bending down towards the table during the voting sector of the night, which appeared as if the star was using cocaine.

Damiano strongly denied the very serious accusations, explaining was inspecting a broken glass on the table. Later, the star was able to prove himself innocent by taking a blood test voluntarily – the test being negative. Confirmed by the contest, the EBU said: “No drug use took place in the Green Room and we consider the matter closed”, adding that they were “alarmed that inaccurate speculation leading to fake news has overshadowed the spirit and the outcome of the event and unfairly affected the band” at the time.

Singer Nemo was the first non-binary person to win the contest just last year. Representing Switzerland with the song The Code, they were Switzerland’s third winner since 1988. Though not totally controversial for the LGBT-friendly contest, this was still a huge feat for the community and Switzerland who achieved 591 points – finishing with the fourth most highest score in the competition finals ‘ history!

Arguably breaking Eurovision’s rules on no political statements, Finland’s entry went out of their way in 2012 to protest their country’s ban on gay weddings at the time. Known as ‘ Finland’s lesbian kiss, ‘ Krista Siegfrids performed song Marry Me before publicly kissing her girlfriend on stage, live on air.

Katie Price, pregnant, performing to become UK's entry, 2005
A younger Katie Price auditioning to become ‘ 05’s UK entry, the star shared she regretted not making it through during her time on Big Brother (PA)

The song was deliberately chosen to add to her protest against the Finnish parliament’s decision to refuse a vote on gay marriage legislation. Whilst the EBU may insist on a ban on acts of a political commentary, it is clear that politics in imbedded into the nature of the show.

Most iconic, at least for brits, would have to be ex model and sociality Katie Price’s performance in 2005. Failing to make the cut as the UK entry that year, fans could never forget the pregnant star singing Not Just Anybody in a barbie-pink latex jumpsuit which highlighted her slight baby bump.

The now mother-of-five famously pled to be Britain’s representative act, performing at the pre-selection UK show. Controversial at the time due to her pregnancy and nature of her career, Katie obviously did not succeed in achieving her dream.

However, the star recently picked up the mic again, performing a shockingly good selection called Katie Price’s Big Bangers which included retro classics and pop classics We Don’t Have to Take Our Clothes Off, Everybody’s Free (to Feel Good) and Finally… at a Butlins resort of all places!

‘I’ve moved three times with my Amazon devices and swear by the Echo Dot and Pop’

I’ve been using Amazon Echo devices for years, and in that time I’ve built up a lot of variety in my collection. In an old apartment I bought myself the Echo Dot 3rd generation and 4th generation with clock and they still work perfectly, even though I’ve moved them through four different homes.

I use the Echo Dot in my living room and office. It sets timers, plays music and books and lets me know when Amazon deliveries are on the way. The Amazon Echo Dot with Clock is the biggest of my collection and has been a bedroom staple ever since I bought it.

It’s handy that I can see at a glance what time it is, especially when it leads to the discovery I can stay in bed a little longer. I’ve also set a routine so it automatically plays rain sounds at 9pm, exclusively in my bedroom, which I love as background sound when I’m reading.

READ MORE: ‘ I tried Morphy Richard’s game changer 10-in-1 cooker and it’s really easy to use ‘

READ MORE: ‘ I just moved house and found the best cordless vacuum for dust ‘

Since I purchased this Amazon has revamped the clock format to be available with the Echo Spot which has a screen that can show multiple things rather than just the time, and in hindsight is an upgrade from the Echo Dot. It’s £79.99 which is a little more than the Dot and Pop but it does have a screen that the more basic devices don’t.

I moved house earlier this year and suddenly had more rooms that I wasn’t sharing with housemates and a desire to buy a few more Alexa devices. I opted for the new Echo Pop in Lavender Bloom and Midnight Teal, instead of the Glacier White I’d have previously. The pop of colour they give to a room is quite nice and although they’re smaller than the others the speaker faces the room, I find they have great sound quality.

The one in my kitchen is handy for setting reminders and timers while I’m cooking, especially when it’s something that’s going to be in the oven for a while as I can sync the alerts to other spots in the house if I’m not staying in the kitchen.

The Echo Dot with clock is great for the bedside table (Jada Jones)

My favourite feature of all four devices is that I can play something off all four at the same time and it plays in sync. This has been particularly handy when I’m listening to Audible and moving between different rooms as I don’t miss out on any of the plot.

The app is really convenient too, I can add alarms in from anywhere and even switch on music before I step through my front door.

I find Echo devices really convenient to use, all you have to say is Alexa to activate the listening feature and I’ve rarely had issues. I spent a short time in my cousin’s house, who uses Google Nest devices around her house, and found it slightly less convenient as you need to say more to activate listening. Apple also has a HomePod that could work well for fans of Apple Technology, although I’ve personally never used it.

Cadillac wins formal approval for F1 entry in 2026

US car giant General Motors has had its Formula 1 entry for the 2026 season formally approved.

It will name the new team after its luxury Cadillac brand.

The decision to approve GM’s bid comes just over two months after the company reached an agreement in principle with F1 to enter the sport next year.

F1 had previously rejected a bid from the US team Andretti, which was linked to Cadillac.

But the greater commitment of GM in a new proposal put forward later in the year has convinced F1 to admit Cadillac.

A joint statement from F1 and motorsport’s governing body the FIA said Cadillac’s bid had been approved “following the completion of their respective sporting, technical and commercial assessments”.

The entry will be run by the US organisation TWG in a revisioning of the initial bid.

The new team, which has a UK base at Silverstone, will be a joint effort between GM and TWG, with Dan Towriss, owner of US team Andretti Global, and TWG’s Mark Walter as the other key investors.

Former Indycar and F1 driver Michael Andretti is no longer involved with the team he founded. His father Mario, the 1978 world champion, will be involved in an advisory capacity.

Last year, TWG named Briton Graeme Lowdon, a senior figure at the Manor team that raced in F1 from 2010-16, as team principal.

F1 president and CEO Stefano Domenicali said: “As we said in November, the commitment by General Motors to bring a Cadillac team to F1 was an important and positive demonstration of the evolution of our sport.

” I want to thank GM and TWG for their constructive engagement over many months and look forward to welcoming the team on the grid from 2026 for what will be another exciting year for Formula 1. “

F1 was swayed by key factors that it saw as differentiators over the initial Andretti bid.

These were that there was a commitment to a full works team over the coming years, an agreement for an engine supply with Ferrari rather than relying on F1’s rules to secure a compulsory engine, and the commitment of GM to build its own engine in the future.

An investigation into F1’s original decision to reject Andretti’s entry by the US department of justice also played a part.

F1’s governing body the FIA had approved the Andretti entry before F1’s initial rejection.

FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem described the decision as” a transformative moment”.

Towriss said:” For the past years, we have worked hand-in-hand with GM to lay a robust foundation for an extraordinary F1 entry.

“Now, with 2026 in our sights after today’s final approval from the FIA and F1, we’re accelerating our efforts – expanding our facilities, refining cutting-edge technologies and continuing to assemble top-tier talent”.

GM was attracted into F1 by the new engine regulations that are being introduced next year along with new chassis rules.

These will increase the proportion of power produced by the hybrid part of the engine to about 50% from the current 20% and mandate the use of fully sustainable fuels.

The new rules were instrumental in attracting GM’s US rival Ford and Germany’s Audi, and persuading Honda to stay involved after initially deciding to quit F1.

Ford is starting a partnership with Red Bull, which is producing its own engine from 2026, while Audi has bought the Sauber team and will rebrand it from next year. Honda is switching from Red Bull to become Aston Martin’s factory partner next season.

Everton to appoint Leeds’ Kinnear as chief executive

Getty Images

Everton will appoint Angus Kinnear as their new chief executive, with the Leeds United CEO beginning the role on 1 June.

The 47-year-old has been at the West Yorkshire club since 2017 and oversaw promotion to the Premier League three years later, as well as the ownership transition to 49ers Enterprises in 2023 and the club’s purchase of Elland Road.

The Toffees have been without a permanent chief executive since the departure of Denise Barrett-Baxendale in June 2023, with Colin Chong acting in an interim role since.

Everton executive chairman Marc Watts said: “Angus is one of England’s leading football executives and brings a wealth of relevant experience.

” His appointment means Everton will go into the summer with a first-class leader. “

Everton have also announced changes in their executive structure with director of football Kevin Thelwell leaving the club at the end of the season when his contract expires.

Chief commercial and communications officer Richard Kenyon will also be leaving the club, with new appointments in the executive leadership team to be announced in due course.

Everton said they will” transition from a single director of football to a wider sporting leadership team”.

Thelwell worked under spending constraints

Since the start of the 2022-23 season, when Thelwell oversaw his first transfer window, Everton have implemented considerable cost-cutting measures to balance the books and are the only Premier League club during that period with a positive net spend of £80m.

But despite receiving two deductions totalling eight points after an appeal for breaching the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) last season, the club have managed to survive in the top flight and are 15 points clear of the bottom three.

Thelwell sanctioned the signings of 22 players – with significant fees paid only for players aged 25 or under – and either sold or released 26 players, particularly those who were older and high-earning.

The largest transfer outlay was on Amadou Onana for £33m from Lille in 2022, and the Belgium midfielder went on to join Aston Villa in the summer for £50m.

Watts added:” Kevin has been integral in ensuring Premier League survival in this difficult period.

What changes have taken place at Leeds?

Championship club Leeds have moved to appoint former Premier League and Football Association (FA) chairman Peter McCormick as their executive vice-chairman.

Sources say McCormick is not a replacement for Kinnear but the two will work alongside each other and the board until the end of the season, with the club then reviewing its management structure.

Leeds chairman Paraag Marathe said: “I want to thank Angus for his commitment and service for so many years and for being a fantastic steward and leader of the club.

” As we move forward, I am confident that the incredible talent across our team will sustain our success. “
