Gunmen Kill 20 People In Ondo Farm Settlements

Armed men suspected to be herdsmen have attacked four communities in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State, killing over 20 farmers.

The deadly attacks were said to have been perpetrated at midnight, over the weekend, and took place in Aba Pastor, Aba Sunday, Ademekun camp, and Aba Alajido camps within Ala Elefosan.

A resident of one of the communities said fourteen bodies were recovered in the last 48 hours, adding that some residents are still missing.

The Regent of one of the communities attacked –&nbsp, Ademekun camp – Adelowo Adekemisola, lamented that fourteen farmers were killed in the area by the gunmen.

Adekemisola said they stormed the communities in the middle of the night via the boundary with Edo State and started shooting sporadically.

Police operatives are seen on duty.

The Public Relations Officer of Ondo State Police Command, Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the incident to newsmen.

Odunlami said the police and other security agencies have since swung into action to apprehend the murderers and provide adequate security in farming communities around Akure North Local Government Area.

However, the Ondo State Government has yet to comment on the matter as of the time of publishing this report.

The incident is the latest in a series of attacks against farmers in Nigeria. Similar incidents have been recorded across the country, especially in the northern region where gang members have held sway.

In January, scores of farmers were killed in the North-Eastern state of Borno after some gunmen rounded them up in Dumba on the shores of Lake Chad and shot them dead.

Man City boss Taylor sacked five days before cup final

Manchester City have sacked head coach Gareth Taylor just five days before the Women’s League Cup final.

The 52-year-old succeeded Nick Cushing in May 2020 and led City to two major honours – but Cushing has now returned as interim boss.

City missed out on last season’s Women’s Super League title on goal difference and are currently fourth, 12 points adrift of defending champions Chelsea.

Taylor won his final game in charge on Sunday, as City beat Aston Villa 2-0 to reach the Women’s FA Cup semi-finals.

“Manchester City prides itself on competing at the top of the WSL and on its outstanding record of qualifying for European competition”, said managing director Charlotte O’Neill.

“Unfortunately, results this season have so far not reached this high standard”.

City have lost four of their 16 league games and are one point outside the qualification places for the Women’s Champions League, with Arsenal having a game in hand.

Cushing will be in charge for the remainder of the season, with City facing Chelsea in the League Cup final on Saturday (12: 15 GMT kick-off).

City lifted the FA Cup in Taylor’s first year in charge, before winning the League Cup in 2022.

In four full seasons under Taylor they did not finish outside the top four, but a late fightback by Arsenal in the penultimate game of last season cost City their first WSL title since 2016.

O’Neill added: “With six games of the WSL campaign remaining, we believe that a change of management will breathe fresh life into our bid to ensure qualification for the 2025-26 Women’s Champions League.

” We would like to place on record our thanks to Gareth for all of his efforts during his many years at City.

“Our FA Cup and League Cup triumphs will remain special moments in the history of this football club. We wish him all the best for the future”.

Cushing previously helped City win the WSL and the FA Cup, plus the League Cup twice, before leaving in January 2020 to join New York City.

‘ Controversial figure who divided fanbase ‘ – analysis

Gareth Taylor has been a controversial figure with several players speaking out publicly about their experiences at the club during his time in charge.

England goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck described her relationship with Taylor as “fractured”, while the dramatic circumstances surrounding forward Chloe Kelly’s exit in January raised eyebrows further.

That led to divisions within the fanbase over Taylor but it is City’s underwhelming performances this season that ultimately proved to be his downfall.

Despite strong runs in the domestic cups, their WSL form has fallen way below expectation and they have not made a mark in European competition during Taylor’s tenure.

Injuries to key players have not helped Taylor in recent seasons but the club have largely backed him in the transfer market and given him enough resources off the pitch.

NATO’s Rutte backs Bosnia after separatist moves by Serbian region

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte has pledged the military alliance’s “unwavering” support for Bosnia and Herzegovina’s federal government after a series of separatist moves from Bosnian Serb leaders.

Rutte spoke in Sarajevo on Monday after meeting the three members of Bosnia’s multiethnic presidency shortly after Bosnian Serb lawmakers passed legislation&nbsp, barring federal judicial authorities and police from operating in the autonomous territory of Republika Srpska.

The NATO chief said any actions that undermine the Dayton Agreement, which ended the country’s 1992-1995 war, were “unacceptable”. He warned that “inflammatory rhetoric and actions” posed a direct threat to Bosnia’s “stability and security”.

Since the end of the Bosnian War, the country has consisted of two autonomous regions – Republika Srpska and a Bosniak-Croat federation, which are linked by a weak central government.

Bosnian officials said the Republika Srpska laws violate the peace agreement, which binds the two regions under joint institutions, including the army, top courts and tax authorities.

After meeting Rutte, Zeljka Cvijanovic, the Serb member of Bosnia’s presidency, said it was wrong to “put the blame on one side only”.

But Denis Becirovic, the Bosniak member of the presidency, described the Serb moves as a “brutal attack on the constitutional order”.

“Destabilisation of this part of Europe would only benefit Moscow”, Becirovic said.

“You have got to solve this, the three of you”, Rutte said in remarks aimed at the members of the presidency.

Reporting from Sarajevo, Al Jazeera’s Jonah Hull said: “It is a tense and quite possibly dangerous moment in which Mark Rutte makes his first visit to Bosnia as the new secretary-general of NATO at a time when Bosnia’s joint power-sharing structures and institutions are facing an unprecedented challenge from within”.

Hard-won peace ‘ jeopardised ‘

The Bosnian Serb laws were passed after a state court sentenced Milorad Dodik, the territory’s pro-Russia president, to a year in prison and a six-year ban from state office for defying Christian Schmidt, the international high representative charged with overseeing Bosnia’s peace accords.

Dodik, who has faced United States and British sanctions for his separatist actions, has rejected his court sentence, calling it anti-Serb.

The situation has sparked fears of incidents between Bosnian- and Serb-dominated police similar to ones at the start of the war in the 1990s when the country’s Serbs rebelled against Bosnian independence from the former Yugoslavia and moved to form a mini-state.

The International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia found that more than 100, 000 people were killed in the Bosnian War – at least 70 percent of them Bosniak Muslims, in what is regarded as the only genocide in Europe since World War II. More than 8, 000 Bosniak men and boys were killed by Bosnian Serb forces in the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, one of the worst mass killings of the war.

Bosnia has struggled to move forwards with a heavily divided society and a stagnant economy. Bosniak politicians often accuse the Republika Srpska of preventing the country from advancing.

Still, peace has held since the Dayton Agreement, and Rutte said on Monday that NATO would “not allow hard-won peace to be jeopardised”.

“Three decades after the Dayton Peace Agreement, I can tell you: NATO remains firmly committed to the stability of this region and to the security of Bosnia and Herzegovina”, he said.

We’re Not Disturbed By El-Rufai’s Defection To SDP – Kaduna APC

The Kaduna chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) says it will not lose sleep over the defection of the immediate past governor of the state, Nasir El-Rufai, to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

El-Rufai had on Monday announced his resignation from the APC, expressing disappointment with the ruling party’s leadership style. He accused it of&nbsp, straying from the progressive ideals of its founding members.

However, in its reaction, the Kaduna State chapter of the APC in a statement by its secretary, Yahaya Pate, said the party remained unperturbed by the defection of the former governor.

According to him, the APC is focused on delivering Kaduna State to President Bola Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani in 2027.

“We are unperturbed by former governor Nasir El-Rufai’s defection to another party. Our focus in Kaduna is on how to deliver the state to both President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani come 2027.

” The APC in Kaduna State is growing day by day, judging from the calibre of politicians streaming into the party daily. So, we are not disturbed by anybody defecting to another party based on our governor’s inclusive governance in Kaduna State. We are not disturbed and we are not going to lose sleep over El-Rufai’s moves”.

El-Rufai said his defection was over the party leaders ‘ unwillingness to address certain issues he had raised.

” At this point in my political journey, I have come to the conclusion that I must seek another political platform for the pursuit of the progressive values I cherish, “the former governor said.

” My eight-year tenure in Kaduna State was devoted to implementing progressive policies to advance human development. These records count for little in the current APC that has castrated its organs and treated its membership with contempt in the last two years, I find this no longer acceptable. “

‘Football regulator bill could be law by summer’

The Football Governance Bill could become law by the summer, says English Football League chairman Rick Parry.

The bill, which was reintroduced by the Labour government in October, will reach its report stage on Tuesday, when it will be examined in the House of Lords.

It will establish a first independent regulator for the professional men’s game in England and was initially tabled under the former Conservative government in March 2024.

The bill failed to pass through Parliament before the Conservatives lost to Labour in the general election.

The legislation will grant powers to a body that is independent from government and football authorities to oversee clubs in England’s top five tiers.

A number of amendments have been proposed but Parry anticipates a third reading taking place on 31 March, before it goes back to the House of Commons.

Parry, whose organisation has failed to agree a funding package with the Premier League, says the new version of the bill is “better than the last one”.

“Parachute payments are within the scope of the bill and the Conservative opt-out provision, where the two leagues could opt out of the backstop, has been removed”, he said.

“Very importantly, the state of the game report is to be delivered within 18 months rather than the three-year timetable the Conservatives proposed.

” This is a massive point for football. Getting it out as soon as possible is a game-changer.

“We all need to recognise football is not doing a great job of self-regulation.

The Premier League remains steadfast in its view that the regulator should be” light touch”.

Baroness Brady, vice-chair at West Ham, has tabled a number of amendments, which many feel will water down the impact of the regulator.

Last month Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch spoke out against the idea of a regulator, describing it as” a waste of money”.

The EFL has written to Badenoch to question her stance.

” We were surprised she had come out against the bill, “said Parry.

” She said she had spoken to people in football who thought it was a waste of time.

“We pointed out she hadn’t spoken to anyone at the EFL and that she hadn’t taken our views on board.
