Kim Kardashian sparks age-old debate after returning £1.5m ring to ex Kris Humphries

Kim Kardashian recently revealed that she had to return her engagement ring to Kris Humphries following their divorce, despite claiming she had paid for most of it.

In an episode of The Kardashians, the reality star shared that surrendering the 18-carat emerald-cut diamond ring was part of her 2013 divorce settlement. Humphries later auctioned it off for £578, 000, with his representative confirming it was legally his property following the dissolution of their marriage.

Kim’s revelation reignites a long-standing debate: should women return their engagement rings if the relationship ends? Opinions are split, with legal, ethical, and emotional arguments all coming into play.

Legally, engagement rings are often considered conditional gifts, meaning they are given with the expectation that marriage will take place. If the wedding is called off, courts in many places, including several U. S. states, have ruled that the ring should be returned to the giver.

However, laws vary by location and circumstances. Some states follow a no-fault rule, meaning the reason for the breakup doesn’t impact whether the ring is returned. In contrast, other legal systems consider who was responsible for ending the engagement.

In the UK, the law takes a slightly different stance. Under the Law Reform (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1970, an engagement ring is considered an absolute gift unless there is an explicit agreement that it should be returned if the marriage does not take place. This means that, in most cases, the recipient has no legal obligation to return the ring.

However, if the ring is a family heirloom, courts may rule that it should be returned to the giver, particularly if there is evidence that it was given with the expectation of being passed down through generations.

Beyond the legal framework, personal beliefs shape how people view this issue. Many believe that returning the ring is simply the right thing to do. Reddit users debating this topic on a thread titled ‘ Return engagement ring after breakup? ‘ largely agreed that the ring should be given back.

Would you return your engagement ring if the relationship ends? Let us know in the comments.

One user stated: “An engagement ring is given in contemplation of marriage, therefore it’s classified as a conditional gift. If the marriage doesn’t take place, then the ring should be returned to the giver”. While others were more direct, with one user bluntly advising, “Definitely return the ring and get some therapy, girl”.

On the other hand, some argue that an engagement ring is a gift given freely, without conditions. One Redditor countered: “If it’s a family heirloom, I’d say yes, return it. But if not, expecting it back seems petty in my opinion. It’s a gift, not a contract”.

Another one user suggested the circumstances of the breakup should play a role: “If it was amicable, I’d personally want to give the ring back anyway, as in my eyes it’s part of a condition of marrying that person. However, if the guy had cheated, then I think the girl is well within her right to keep the ring, lol”!

Dating and relationship expert, and the founder of So What, a female self empowerment community, Hope Flynn, agrees that context is key. Telling the Mirror: “Whether or not a woman should give back her engagement ring after a breakup or divorce is really a personal decision – there’s no one size fits all answer for this. It really depends on the people involved and how they feel about it”.

Flynn adds: “Some might see the ring as a gift and choose to keep it or even sell it, while others feel it should be returned, especially if the wedding didn’t happen”. She continues: “Personally, I think if the ring is a family heirloom, like his grandmother’s ring, then it should definitely be given back. It’s more than just a piece of jewellery as it holds sentimental value to him and his family and I think that should be respected. At the end of the day it’s about what feels right to you and the situation you’re in”.

Akpabio Accuses Natasha Of Fact Distortion, Misrepresentation

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has accused Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of distorting facts and misrepresenting the Senate in the international arena.

Akpoti-Uduaghan, who was recently suspended for six months for violating Senate rules, reported the matter to the United Nations Inter-parliamentary conference in New York on Tuesday, accusing Akpabio of victimisation, sexual harassment and abuse of office.

During Senate plenary on Thursday, Akpabio criticised the Kogi senator for trying to embarrass the upper chamber by presenting a misleading narrative to the international community.

He acknowledged the intervention of a federal lawmaker, Kafilat Ogbara, who cautioned foreign media that the senator’s version of events was inconsistent with the actual proceedings in the Senate.

Akpabio said, “I am aware that she distorted the facts and globalised the matter, embarrassing the Senate by giving a different narrative. I appreciate Hon Kafilat for clarifying to the international media that what was presented was completely different from the reality”.

The Senate President further said “She brought the matter before the Senate through a petition but did not allow us to examine it. Instead, she took it to court and later to the international community. Actions like these could discourage politicians from appointing women into key positions”.

Akpabio, who spoke after receiving a vote of confidence from his colleagues, urged senators to remain focused on their legislative responsibilities and avoid distractions that could derail the work of the Senate.

Information Minister Hails Tinubu’s Commitment to Nigeria’s Economic Transformation

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mr. Mohammed Idris, has expressed optimism that President Bola Tinubu will be judged favourably by history for putting Nigeria on the path of progress and for governing with a sense of divine responsibility.

Speaking at a ministerial press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, Idris noted that Tinubu’s ongoing reforms, though challenging, are necessary to reposition the country for long-term stability and development.

“We have crossed the Rubicon, and the pains are gradually easing as the positive impact of these reforms begins to manifest. Already, we are witnessing a reduction in food prices, stability in exchange rates, and a gradual decline in petroleum product costs—clear indicators that the policies are yielding results,” Idris said.

He noted that transformative reforms often come with initial hardships, but are essential for national progress.

“Across the world, history has shown that meaningful reforms are never easy; they require sacrifice, resilience, and a commitment to long-term progress.

“The initial difficulties that accompany these changes are a necessary price for a more stable and prosperous future,” the minister said.

The minister also appreciated Nigerians for their patience and support, urging religious leaders to continue to pray for the country’s peace, security, and development during the sacred seasons of Ramadan and Lent.

Ireland’s Easterby ‘disappointed’ by Galthie comments

Men’s Six Nations: Italy v Ireland

Venue: Stadio Olimpico, Rome Date: Saturday, 15 March Kick-off: 14: 15 GMT

Ireland interim boss Simon Easterby has expressed his disappointment with France head coach Fabien Galthie’s comments regarding the Antoine Dupont injury incident in last week’s Six Nations game.

Les Bleus won 42-27 in Dublin to end Ireland’s Grand Slam hopes, but the France skipper’s serious knee injury dominated post-match discussion.

Dupont was attempting to steal the ball in the 28th minute and was challenged by Tadhg Beirne, who then fell on to the scrum-half’s right leg as Ireland prop Andrew Porter joined the ruck.

Galthie reported Porter and Beirne to the match’s citing commissioner and called their actions in the incident “reprehensible”, but no action has been taken against the Ireland pair.

“Without getting myself into trouble here, I just think it’s the game unfortunately”, said Easterby.

“No player goes out to intentionally injure another player. For everyone, or for the majority of people watching, looking at it afterwards, everyone felt like it was a rugby incident which was really unfortunate.

Easterby said the French camp’s post-match comments created a situation where” people are getting abuse”.

” It’s just unnecessary and not acceptable, “he added.

” It happens, we know it happens, but those things could have been avoided had maybe other things been said post-game by certain individuals. “

When asked to clarify who he meant by” certain individuals”, Easterby said:” The French camp have obviously come out pretty strongly post-game about the incident.

Asked to clarify whether players have received online abuse in the wake of the incident, he said: “I’m just saying that it’s unnecessary, the coverage on social media, that’s all I am saying.

” I don’t read it, I don’t necessarily take a lot of notice of it but when it’s directed at certain individuals and certain individuals ‘ wider family group, then it becomes an issue.

“We talk as coaches all the time and we chat post-game. I think it could have been a different discussion, a different platform to air those frustrations that maybe France had.

” We and World Rugby and the Six Nations believe there was no case to answer and certainly it didn’t help, it almost sort of fanned the flames of what was a really unfortunate incident.

Easterby ‘ confident ‘ Crowley will stay in Ireland

Easterby was speaking after restoring Jack Crowley as Ireland’s starting fly-half for Saturday’s final Six Nations encounter with Italy in Rome.

Crowley, who has been second-choice behind Sam Prendergast recently, returns amid reports linking him with a move to English Premiership side Leicester Tigers when his Munster deal expires in the summer.

Easterby, however, is “confident” the 25-year-old will remain in Ireland.

“Jack knows how important he is to us”, said Easterby, who added he does not think speculation will affect Crowley’s performance on Saturday.

“Regardless of selection across the last four games, he understands the role that he has and the standing he has in the group.

” He’s a brilliant person first and foremost. He’s a great pro, he’s always looking to get better.
