Liverpool Can Handle Title Tension – Slot

After overcoming nerves in their tense win against Wolves, Arne Slot insists Liverpool can handle the pressure of the Premier League title race.

In a bid to win a record-equalling 20th English title, Slot’s side travels to Aston Villa on Wednesday, confident that a victory will put them 10 points clear of Arsenal in the process.

But Liverpool, in dynamic form for much of the season, have looked less secure of late and almost blew a two-goal lead in Sunday’s 2-1 win over lowly Wolves at Anfield.

Just days prior to the Merseyside derby draw, Everton’s James Tarkowski scored a stoppage-time equalizer to end the Reds’ costly collapse.

Liverpool’s reserves also crashed out of the FA Cup with an embarrassing fourth-round loss at second-tier Plymouth recently, leading to fears the treble chasers are beginning to crack as expectations increase.

After the Wolves game, Reds left-back Andrew Robertson acknowledged that it was typical for the players to become anxious as they nearer the finish line.

However, Slot cited Liverpool’s ability to win at least one game this season as evidence that they won’t crumble under pressure.

According to Slot, “It is because we are coming to the end of the season, not because of us but because of what people think of it,” Slot said to reporters on Tuesday.

“We have won other games, either at home or away, with one goal and a tight score.” When it was ultimately too tight, I can recall Crystal Palace being away.

You two will talk about nerves if this occurs at the end of the season.

If we are winning 1-0, it will require a lot of defending and hard work to secure a win in the Premier League.

&nbsp, ‘Fight until the end ‘

With a 15-game unbeaten run in the league so far, including their most recent top-flight defeat at Newcastle on November 2, Arsenal have just added to the concern at Anfield.

After winning the Premier League in 2020 under Slot’s successor Jurgen Klopp, several of Liverpool’s players have experience in the title race.

In his Dutch title-winning campaign with Feyenoord, Slot has also been successful in fending off the stress of the season’s final weeks.

However, the Reds manager has opinions on how helpful those victories will be in Liverpool’s season-long success.

“We lean a lot on the players. They have to show up and bring the performance. We don’t present a meeting on how to deal with the pressure, that is not how it works”, he said.

They are used to playing large games with a lot of pressure, but don’t overdo it, they say. We must not over-value experience.

” It is difficult to take experiences from that time with Feyenoord, different players, different opponents, different league.

“And the ones who won the league in Corona time (during the pandemic) with no fans in the stadium, who had a lead of 25 points at one point, hardly any pressure then,” they said.

Slot is aware that Villa could put pressure on Liverpool, but he thinks their successful defeat of Wolves will prove effective.

“They have a great home record. You’re aware that Villa away is one of the toughest fixtures you can face when you get the fixture list. Very good manager, always has a very good game plan”, he said.

“We didn’t play our best on Sunday, but winning gave us a different perspective than the final minute of an Everton game.”

It indicates that your team will fight until the very end. You must win these games if you want anything, right?

Cody Gakpo and Joe Gomez will miss against Villa because they will need a “several weeks” to recover from a hamstring injury.

McIlroy’s wait for TGL win goes on with last-hole loss

Shane Lowry’s The Bay defeated Rory McIlroy’s Boston Common Golf Club to conclude the Tomorrow’s Golf League (TGL) triple-header on Monday in Florida.

McIlroy was competing alongside former Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama and American Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley in the indoor competition along with Tiger Woods.

However, Wyndham Clark’s final-hole eagle secured The Bay’s 5-4 victory after his Boston team had already lost for the third time in the opening season.

Ludvig Aberg was the Bay’s top performer less than 24 hours after his PGA Tour victory at the Californian Genesis Invitational.

They had previously defeated Atlanta Drive GC 6-5. By winning three of the opening four holes, The Bay had won the first game.

Atlanta, which had previously unbeaten, rallied, but Justin Thomas’ eagle putt for overtime just fell short.

In the first match of the day, Atlanta had beaten Los Angeles by the same margin, after overtime.

On the 14th, LA’s Tommy Fleetwood drained a 17-foot putt down the hill to put the game in overtime, but Thomas outperformed Sahith Theegala.

In the nearest-the-pin challenge, Patrick Cantlay’s ball finished closer than Theegala’s to seal victory.

ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Who will win the tournament?

Pride, bragging rights and a $2.24m winner’s cheque will be on the line when the world’s top eight one-day international teams meet in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan, beginning on Wednesday.

In the 2017 final at The Oval in England, Pakistan defeated India to win the previous edition. Pakistan will look to win the crown in front of an adoring home crowd this time around to celebrate the return of a significant ICC event to their nation after 29 years.

In the meantime, T20 world champions India will have their sights on reversing their 180-run defeat to Pakistan in a bid to win a second consecutive ICC title.

After capturing the tri-nation series hosted in Pakistan, which also included South Africa, it seems unlikely that New Zealand will make a contenders list.

Australia’s loss of their talismanic captain Pat Cummins, as well as Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Marsh, has seen them slump into disarray and out of contention for the title.

The three favorites to win the ICC Champions Trophy are:

India

Best result: Champions (2002, 2013)
ODI ranking: 1
Players to watch: Shubman Gill, Kuldeep Yadav, Hardik Pandya

Before Australia turned the tables on the undefeated host nation and won the title on November 19, 2023, India’s 50-over World Cup was scheduled to be its crowning glory on home soil.

Rohit Sharma’s men brushed aside that crushing final loss, regrouped, and just seven months later were crowned T20 world champions.

India has excelled in limited overs cricket over the past year, surviving to separate their disappointing Test results from their continued dominance of T20 and ODI opponents.

India are the most formidable contenders for the Champions Trophy, thanks to their recent 3-0 victory over England in an away ODI series and Shubman Gill’s prolific run-scoring prowess. Kuldeep Yadav’s wily leg-break bowling and Hardik Pandya’s ever-reliable all-round form make the two-time champions the side to beat in the star-studded eight-team tournament.

Pakistan

Best result: Champions (2017)
ODI ranking: 3
Players to watch: Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Fakhar Zaman

Any predictions about Pakistan’s performance seem foolish because of the never-ending rollercoaster ride of coach and captain sackings, embarrassing losses, and incomprehensible victories. The green men’s team will enjoy the chance to capture their first ICC title away from home and offer some rest for their devoted supporters.

Pakistan have won their final three bilateral international matches away from home, including a 2-1 victory over Australia and a 3-0 defeat over a formidable South Africa side.

Mohammad Rizwan’s team boast an array of match-winning players, including star batter Babar Azam, fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi and hero of their 2017 title-winning run, Fakhar Zaman. Pakistan will have a better chance than the title they won eight years ago if all three players find their best form in front of a passionate and cricket-deprived home crowd.

New Zealand

Best result: Champions (2000)
ODI ranking: 4
Players to watch: Kane Williamson, Matt Henry, Mitchell Santner

New Zealand have yet to maximize their chances of winning any of the last five ICC limited-overs World Cups, which have already taken them to the knockout stages.

The Blackcaps have not won an ICC tournament since the 2000 edition of the Champions Trophy, but under the shrewd leadership of all-rounder Mitchell Santner and the return to form of former captain Kane Williamson, New Zealand will be confident of turning the tide this time.

Following a comfortable win in the Tri-nation Series in Pakistan, they now have a chance to win the tournament. Their top batsmen have returned to winning ways, and their pace bowlers have been able to take wickets just in time.

When facing the best South Asian teams at the tournament, New Zealand will benefit from their physical condition and fielding skills.

JUST IN: Nigeria’s Inflation Rate Drops To 24.48 Per Cent

Nigeria’s headline inflation has dropped to 24.48 per cent year on year in January 2025. &nbsp,

This is a significant decrease from the December 2024 record of 34.80% headline inflation.

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reports this. The Statistician-General of the Federation Adeyemi Adeniran announced this on Tuesday.

He said the Consumer Price Index (CPI) –&nbsp, which measures the rate of change in prices of goods and commodities –&nbsp, has declined to 24.48 per cent year on year in January.

Adeniran, who was speaking at a briefing in Abuja, explained that rural inflation reached 22.15 percent while urban inflation reached 26.09%.

He said that the general prices of goods and services in the country declined, compared to the 34.80 per cent in December, which used the old template.

CPI rebasing involves updating the reference year used to determine inflation in the nation, changing the overall product and service mix to better reflect consumer spending patterns and ensuring that inflation data accurately represents the state of the economy at its current level.

According to the CPI figures for the period under review, the rebased food inflation stood at 26.08 per cent year-on-year in January, representing a decline in the food index when compared with 39.84 per cent year-on-year recorded in the preceding month.

Similar to January’s rebased core index, which excludes the volatile prices of agricultural produce and energy, was 22.59% year over year.

Wada says Sinner case ‘million miles away from doping’

Jannik Sinner’s case was “a million miles away from doping”, a senior figure at the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) has said.

After reaching a settlement over his two positive drug tests last year, Wada issued an immediate three-month ban for the men’s tennis world no.1.

After testing positive for the banned substance clostebol in March of this year, Sinner, 23, was found innocent by an independent panel.

Following the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s (ITIA)’s initial decision to not suspend Sinner, Wada had been requesting a suspension of up to two years after filing an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas).

Wada, however, agreed that Sinner lacked malicious contamination and “did not intend to cheat.”

Sinner has stated that he was inadvertently contaminated by his physiotherapist, who was treating a cut on his hand with an over-the-counter spray, which was later found to contain the banned substance.

The timing and length of the ban, how the Italian was able to agree a deal, and inconsistent trends between recent doping cases have divided the tennis world.

It led to Switzerland’s three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka posting on X: “I don’t believe in a clean sport any more”.

Novak Djokovic, the 24-time Slam winner, questioned the fairness of the process and said there is “favouritism” towards high-profile players.

According to Wada’s general counsel Ross Wenzel, “this case was a million miles away from doping.”

According to the scientists, this could not possibly be a case of intentional doping, including microdosing.

Wenzel defended any suggestion of special treatment and said the ban’s terms, which some had claimed would have little impact on Sinner, were appropriate for the situation and weren’t intended to be based on the tennis calendar.

Sinner is eligible to play in the French Open, the next Grand Slam, which will start on May 25 and runs until May 4 because of his suspension, which first came into effect on February 9, 2019.

Since missing the Australian Open final on January 26, he hasn’t competed and could still be ranked first when he makes a competitive return.

Wenzel stated: “Wada has received messages from people who think the sanction was too high. In some ways, if some people think it’s unfair to the athlete, while others think it’s not enough, maybe it’s an indication that it’s in the right place.”

Sanctions are “blind to the calendar.”

Three days after Sinner’s suspension was lifted, the Rome Masters is scheduled to begin on May 7th, with him eligible for a second suspension.

Before advancing to the French Open, the three-time Grand Slam champion would have the chance to engage in some competitive clay-based action.

On Monday, British player Liam Broady said he believed Sinner’s ban had been timed to impact the world number one’s career” as little as possible”, while former British number one Tim Henman said it” seems a little bit too convenient”.

Wenzel argued that a resolution must be reached before the ban could be put in effect, and that it must be carried out as quickly as possible.

” Once you’ve reached an agreement, what you can’t do is then say ‘ oh, but we’re going to have this apply from two months in the future for a period of three months’, “Wenzel said.

” It must come into effect quickly. Of course, once the deal is done, it’s important that it is executed and that it is made public for reasons of transparency.

“So it happened, because of the timing of the CAS proceedings, it happened to be decided last Friday, it was a very late night, and it came into effect immediately, so that is the reason for the timing.

” The sanctions that we impose and the code even says this, they’re blind to the calendar. The appropriate sanction should be imposed and put into effect when it is put into effect, and it shouldn’t be altered or modified to account for whether or not the events that are occurring are significant.

Wada only discussed reaching a resolution agreement in 2021, which would allow it to reach an agreement with athletes.

Wenzel believes that about 67 resolution agreements have been implemented since Wada’s rules added that provision.

Since the provision became effective in January 2021, I checked this morning and it might be one or two out, according to Wenzel.

” That’s just over four years and there’s been 67 of them and they’ve been applied at different stages, almost all stages of the results management process.
